Bringing my own baggage here, special snowflakey ♥♥♥♥. This game's opening conceit is to place you in headspace of Henry, someone looking to nature and isolation to escape messy personal circumstances. Infidelity, neglect really, to his prior life structure and relationships is the name of the game. The way I played the game was through really trying to inhabit that headspace and enact it. I did so to a fault. Because of that, and perhaps because I'm either too close to it already or the inherent clash I hold between workplaces as a space and emotional catharsis, I'm can't say if I got anything new out of completing the game. I believe someone's opinion of Firewatch lives or dies based on how strong of a reaction Delilah, the only other character for 90% of the game, evokes and encourages engagement with. The gameplay alone is relaxing but not nearly enough to carry the experience. I came in expecting much more slow-burn discussion of life, problems and commiseration to build rapport between her and Henry than was delivered. When the game begins trying to narratively cash in on the relationship between them, I wasn't convinced it was earned. Subjectively, I had long since been interested in engaging with her or her dialogue.
I was relieved to see the game forced an ending where she would not be met in person and not a part of Henry's life going forward.
I think enjoying the game and finding it a novel commentary are contingent on being pre-disposed to engage with Delilah, regardless of if you like or hate her. I did not enjoy the game and did not find it a novel commentary because the game's opener suggested to me soul-searching would be the game's focus and most interactions with Delilah ran opposite to that.
eu sou apaixonado nesse jogo, o visual, a história, TUDO. PERFEITO. meu jogo de conforto.
Intrigante walking simulator
Don't understand why this game has such positive reviews cos I found it insufferable from beginning to end! The characters are awful, with especially cringe inducing cliche "quirky" millenial indie game style dialogue. The game seemed to want me to like Delilah and ship her with the main character but I absolutely hated her! She was such an unlikeable and irritating character, the relationship between them also wasn't interesting despite the game trying super hard to convince me it was The gameplay is boring, most of it is just trying to navigate this giant map which granted does look pretty but trying to navigate it with the god awful map system was nothing but pain, it was an absolute chore constantly Also I never really felt immersed in being working in a firewatch tower! Like I thought this game would have more job based gameplay about monitoring the fires or helping hikers etc. But it did none of that, Fears to Fathom episode 4 did a better job at that and that game was like half an hour long But the biggest and most infuriating aspect was the story
the game builds up this mystery of someone watching you out in the wilderness and that aspect was what kept me playing, there was this sense of conspiracy type mystery as you find all this surveillance equipment tracking you, a fenced off area and teens then have disappeared as well as other missing posters dotted around, like the game makes you believe there is some big conspiracy, mystery going on here BUT it was all nothing, turns out a kid died there once and all that stuff was just his one crazy hobo dad who was worried you find the dead kid but also did everything in his power to lead you directly to it? I'm honestly still confused what his whole plan or reason for doing everything even was but all that stuff with the missing teens? Nope they're totally fine! And other missing posters? Non related apparently, it was all just build up with zero pay off!
So in short, the characters were insufferable, the story was incredibly unsatisfying, the world was pretty but a pain in the ass to navigate and the dialogue was painful
Very good plot line and story, I highly recomend for sure.
Very simple but yet interesting game. Worth playing, and by playing player gets unexplainable feeling in a good way. Overall, the atmosphere is great, which is the main reason of this games worthiness.
