Firebird - The Unfinished

For the price of a lunch, this piece of digital artwork is excellent. It can also serve as a showpiece for others to enjoy. Quality is spelled out loud in this fine treasure.

[h1] Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers [/h1] [i] Note: I played with 2 sensors in standing mode while seated perfectly fine. So seated or standing mode doesn't really matter [/i] This is about a 20 minute VR cinematic experience, with only a few interactions. I'm going to give a tepid recommendation. If you liked the first Firebird La Peri then likely you will also enjoy this VR experience, but it is not for everyone. First of all, although there is music and dance, it really isn't the focus this time around. The ballet dancing happens near the end and only for a short while. Most of the focus is on the story and sculpting. The Unifinished story I found less exciting than La Peri, but it was better directed. It was just a little too by the numbers. I knew where the story was going and it wasn't an original idea. The best part was definitely the sculpting interactions. I just wish they had more depth. Also, more interactions like these throughout the story would have made the story come to life more. The visuals are top notch. The sounds are good. The dance number was a joy to watch, but it was very brief and I wanted more. I did not like how the sculptures were not anatomically correct. I think they wanted to make this story more approachable to families and children so maybe that was the reason for the decision. But it really betrays the art, which is ironically the theme of this series. I really doubt any artist would make these sculptures and make then anatomically incorrect. Art should not be censored. We're grownups. At least offer a censored version for those with kids if that really was a concern. Rate 6/10. Only recommended for those into these types of VR experiences. Excellent, very well done Virtual Story in VR worth the price of admission and one to show people new to VR.

Just finished The Unfinished - pun intended - and I enjoyed it from the beginning till the end. It is a beautiful designed interactive musical experience with great audio and visuals. With only 20 to 30min it is a little bit short, but the story remains exciting the whole time without getting boring. I personally like this episode more than the predecessor La Peri. Therefor I am looking forward to next episode of Firebird.

This is excellent, not quite the emotional impact of the la Peri, but no matter. The Ballet scenes in this and la Peri are so good. I think the method of motion capture controlling an avatar works fabulously for that, better than anyt of the 360 captured ballet scenes I've seen What would be lovely is if they could maybe capture a genuine ballet performance (I do realise that may be a challenge if there ar more than, say, 2 dancers involved. A classical ballet captured and presented that way would be wonderful

Firebird - The Unfinished ist der zweite Teil der Firebird-Serie (getestet mit der HTC Vive) Es ist im Prinzip ein kurzes interaktives Ballettstück. Sowohl die Musik, als auch die Erzähler wirken allerdings sehr professionell und man merkt den Entwicklern eine gewisse Erfahrung an. Auch wenn ich selbst Schwanensee nicht von einem Ententeich unterscheiden kann, hat mir diese kurze Excursion sehr gut gefallen. Als Museumskurator helfen wir 2 Geistern ihre unfertigen Skulpturen zu beenden, welche daraufhin einen magischen Tanz für uns zelibrieren. Ähnlich wie beim ersten Teil überzeugt auch hier wieder die stimmige Atmosphäre, die wunderschöne Musik und die tolle Choreographie der Tänzer. Es ist einfach toll anzusehen wie die Figuren um uns herum zum Leben erwachen und ihre Geschichte erzählen. Wir selbst sind hauptsächlich Beobachter, lediglich in 2 kurzen Sequenzen greifen wir zu Hammer und Meißel, um die Skulpturen aus ihrem Steinblock zu befreien. Ansonsten gibt es nur noch eine kleine Statue und eine Büste, die einen kurzen Satz vom Stapel lassen, wenn wir sie berühren. Leider ist die ganze Erfahrung nach ca. 25 Minuten auch schon vorbei, ob es jemandem die 4,99 wert ist, muss man da natürlich selbst entscheiden. Einen "Wiederspielwert" gibt es eigentlich nicht, lediglich zum Vorführen der Brille wäre es noch geeignet. Overall: An exquisite interactive VR movie short. Worth the price even though it is only about 30 mins of content. The voice acting is good, the animation and graphics are excellent, and the story is moving and enjoyable. You get to carve stone with tools and see amazing sculptures come to life. The viewer stands in one place throughout the experience, but if you have a large play area, you can get very close up to the action. The only thing I would add is the ability to free locomotion around the area where the story takes place to see it from many different angles. I think this is a very important feature of VR movies, and hope it is added later. What is great about this experience is it will appeal to everyone. It is beautiful and my favorite part was the final dance, which you can skip to from the menu to watch again after you finish the whole story. Definitely worth purchasing at full price.

A very beautiful, interactive story. The score is beautiful, the animation is beautiful, and the voice acting is supurb. Looking forward to the next work in the series.

I don’t want to spoil the story here, so I’m going to speak in vague generalizations, and I hope it’s still helpful. This is a very well made short film. Great visual design, beautiful music, and talented voice acting. I expected the interactivity to be inconsequential, to not really matter or leave a mark on the story. But I was pleasantly surprised with how you actually do leave your mark in the film, it was designed really creatively. That’s about all I can say without spoiling it. The runtime is a little over 20 minutes, so for $5 I think it’s a decent value. Of course any paid VR film will be pricey compared to regular movies nowadays. I’m actually working on a video showcasing the best free VR films. But for a paid VR film, this is a good one.
