A very intriguing visual novel, and a unique rhythm game intertwined into it, but if you're not about repeating content, be it for alternate story routes or high scores, then you'll likely be done in <4 hours. There are two key components to the game, so I'll split them up:
The Story
The novel can really be best described as intriguing. The world is completely alien, and uses its own words even for familiar concepts like "house", "mail", or "influencer". It has a full glossary to explain all the unique terminology, both that which might be familiar and that which will not, but it's very consistent about its... 'dialect'? To the point where it really feels like its own different universe. That being said, you will often not know what a character is talking about in the moment, and will have to piece it together from context clues and the like. This plays into the aforementioned intrigue, but on rare occasions it can be lost whether an event is weird because the dream world is weird, or if it's weird even by the dream world's standards. Thankfully if something is weird weird, you will get told sooner rather than later about it.
The Rhythm
The other side of the coin are the rhythm sections. There aren't a lot of them, but they're a fairly if not completely unique gameplay loop, and they flow very well, with exception of some very rapid segments when it becomes hard to tell if you're pressing too early or too late. I would like to see some more features, like highscore saving (and potentially leaderboard) and maybe an extra hard post-game difficulty that includes more complex notes/patterns on earlier tracks; but what's there is good. A noteworthy detail is that environments between Easy and Hard mode are different, giving a rare reason to play on all difficulties. I think as long as you don't have a problem with the amount of content not being super large on a single playthrough (as achievements suggest there is a lot of other endings to the first Act, but exploring those does require retreading some of the same ground), then definitely worth giving this a try, for the unique worldbuilding alone. The devs did some Fine Work with this one [strike]I'll see myself out[/strike]
As someone who doesn't play rhythm games I went into this purely to humour the friend who introduced me to it. I knew about the visual novel component, and while I am an avid consumer of visual novels, the very fact that this game was also a rhythm game low-key filled me with dread. To my pleasant surprise, not only did I love the visual novel aspect, I also wound up enamoured by the rhythm game component. It felt beginner friendly enough that I was able to learn without getting frustrated, while still providing a challenge for me once I had adjusted to the initial learning curve. As for the visual novel component it was incredible. The world-building is incredibly intricate and captivating, and benefits greatly from the in-game glossary and ability to re-check words you might have forgotten mid-sentence. Every visual is beautiful and all the characters are interesting as hell. I would highly recommend this game on all counts. Very excited for more!
Came for the rhythm game. Stayed for the fantastic characters Manages to be very entertaining while also having good emotional and thematic depth The rhythm game also has a good flow and difficulty ramp over the course of the game
What a pretty, cute and fun rhythm game this is! This is typically not my genre but the graphics lured me in. I also love that everyone's hän - no gender, no binary, just vibes. :)
Love this game! Already played it at the Gamescom and instantly fell in love with it! The artstyle, story, characters and gameplay is soooo amazing, this game really needs to go viral!
Absolutely love this game. The art style is super unique and the rhythm part is great for those who are new and those who are looking for a challange. I can warmly recommend the game. It's awesome :D
Unique charming characters? Check Great lore and world building, without throwing everything at you all at once? Check Dialogue and events that leaving you wondering, or maybe even blushing? Check Rhythm music that don't stick to one genre? Check Rhythm gameplay that can be as smooth or as hard as you want it? Check Marr? Checkcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheck I don't have a lot of experience with visual novels, but I believe Fine Work does....well fine work at capturing the attention of curious players through it's well paced world building, fun and charming characters, and it's engaging sendshaping rhythm game. I feel like the developers have done a very good job at pacing the game as well. I'm still in my first playthrough, but so far, I've yet to have a moment in the game where I felt like whatever event I was experiencing was either dragging along too long, or speeding by too quickly. I look forward to playing the next Act ^_^ Stay vivid!
An amazing game with a great story and interesting gameplay. The game looks amazing and the worldbuilding is incredible, I've never fallen in love with a World this fast as I have in this game. Tried the game for the first time during Gamescom 24 and played the Demo after that. The entire Game; Music, Characters, Story, the world are truly one of a kind. It does take a bit to understand what is happening in the story due to the language used, but you get a dictionary which updates for every word and explains what it means, a second playthrough does go a lot smoother. Highly recommend for anyone likes visual novels of any kind, the Rhythm-gameplay is very easy to learn and shouldn't scare anyone off.
there are many things i love about this game, but i think my favorite is that i only ever really have about 75% idea what's going on, at best, but i am completely sold on even what i don't understand. much like being in a dream. also, nothing but love and respect to a visnov with romance where all the love interests are gender-ambiguous freaks (affectionate).
