I am quite happy with this game. You pick a party of three heroes from a selection of four, choose one of three difficulty settings, and then navigate your party through over a dozen dungeon-like levels, fighting enemies, looting chests and dealing with traps. Inbetween levels you get access to a shop where you can buy equipment for your heroes. Each hero starts with one or two unique traits that will help them in combat or with exploration, but they do not level up. Instead, some of the items you can buy will give your heroes stat boots or certain combat effects, either temporarily for one level or permanently. There is also a story about magical artifacts, evil villains and forgotten dungeons. Nothing you haven’t seen anywhere else, but I didn’t mind. The characters were likable and dialogues were mostly short and to the point. The main focus is cleary on dungeon exploration. Once you have completed the campaign, you unlock a fifth hero and skirmish mode. Skirmish mode is kind of a randomized mini campaign where you have to fight your way through three dungeon levels. Once you complete skirmish mode for the first time, you unlock a sixth hero. Some minor nitpicks: - Locking two heros behind the campaign and skirmish mode felt unnecessary. It only limited your options for the first playthrough without any apparent benefit. - There is no documentation of status effects (that I could see). What exactly do Dice Curse, Weakened or Blind do? Statuses like Poisoned or Paralyzed were easier to understand since their effects were more apparent. - Backtracking from dead ends to the main path of a dungeon can sometimes feel tedious. I wish there was a way to speed up movement through areas you have already explored. That being said, this game gets a recommendation from me. It felt neither too complicated nor too simple, but exactly right. The best comparison to other games I can think of is the Dark Quest series. I already bought the sequel, Kingdoms of Dice, and look forward to playing it.
