Reviews
I’m really enjoying my time with this game so far. It’s very polished, fun to play, and overall really well done. Highly recommended.
When I found the demo for this game, it was exactly what I was looking for (and didn't think existed): a beautiful open-world traditional roguelike...with no hunger mechanic! I waited patiently for months for the full version to arrive, and when it did, I dug in and enjoyed it immensely. I adventured slowly and carefully, making maps and taking notes as I went -- I was too chicken to choose permadeath mode, but I wanted to see if I could make it through the game without dying. While I played, I enjoyed the colorful graphics, the entrancing ambient sounds, and of course, the alternating tension and euphoria that one embraces when taking the necessary risks to level up in a traditional roguelike. Then, tragedy struck in the form of a glitch -- my avatar exited a cave and appeared on the surface trapped between mountains. Not having foreseen this possibility, I had not chosen the teleport skill, nor had I purchased a teleport scroll. I was devastated: was I going to have to die on purpose and lose some of my progress just to get un-trapped? But before I took that measure, I went to Pixelarium's Discord server and explained the glitch. The developer responded within a few minutes and got to work right away, and in just one hour pushed an update that got my avatar unstuck. Absolutely incredible! Not only is the game exactly what I want in a roguelike, the developer provided me with life-saving support in a hurry. I would recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a roguelike that feels hand-crafted and expansive without being bafflingly complex. I don't have 500 spare hours to devote to becoming an expert in the nuanced mechanics of Nethack or ADOM (much respect to those who do), but Pixelarium is a game that I am able to grasp, and get lost in.
