Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition

I first played this back when it first came out. All of the Fallout games are very good but this one is special.

The game overall was decent. I had to jump through loopholes and download mods just to make it playable. I thought the story dragged on for a little long and I found little to no interest in the majority of side missions. I played New Vegas before this so I was doing a lot of comparing and it just wasn't on par to that beauty of a game. Solid game nonetheless, 7/10.

Even as it approaches its 20th anniversary, Fallout 3 still holds up incredibly well and delivers a wonderful experience. Exploring the crumbling remains of Washington DC’s most recognizable monuments and museums instantly sets the scene for what is still my favorite wasteland in the entire Fallout series. Bethesda absolutely nailed the environmental storytelling, breathing life into a surprisingly green and beautiful post apocalyptic landscape full of quiet tragedy and dark humor. From the very beginning the game gives you strong quest lines and memorable locations filled with characters that stick with you. Following in your father’s footsteps, deciding the fate of Megaton, and eventually forging your own ending all still feel just as impactful as they did years ago. There’s something special about fighting super mutants in the shadow of the Washington Monument. That mix of real history and the world you’re actively changing is a recipe I wish Bethesda would keep following. It gives me the same kind of satisfaction Assassin’s Creed has always delivered when it blends historical landmarks with player-driven chaos. Fallout 3 works perfectly as a comfort game. It’s engaging without ever feeling overwhelming. The main story wraps up in a reasonable amount of time while still leaving plenty of room for exploration and side content. The DLCs add even more variety. The Pitt brings a grungy, soulful, industrial vibe as you help shape a city that desperately needs direction. That first walk across the bridge and stepping into the Mill still makes me pause every time. Point Lookout spreads things out into a damp, murky swamp that completely changes the feel of the game, making the mansion sweep and those strange plant sequences feel fresh and exciting. Broken Steel feels like a necessary extension of the main story, while Mothership Zeta has a cool concept and a great ending but gets pretty bland and repetitive in its gameplay, much like Operation Anchorage. Overall, Fallout 3 is still a ton of fun nearly two decades later. I know the endless debate between this and New Vegas continues, and I can see both sides. New Vegas is probably the smarter recommendation for someone jumping into the series for the first time, but personally I still prefer Fallout 3. It captures exactly what I want from this universe. I’ll keep coming back to it as a comfort playthrough for years to come. Here’s hoping we eventually get another proper single player entry, and no, I’m not counting Fallout 76. In the meantime, how about another thoughtful remaster like they did with Oblivion? Highly recommended.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
