I'll start by saying why only played 0.2 hours of this game and might actually return it back (I'm still thinking about that as I am writing this). And the reason why I couldn't play any more is controls. In a vacuum with no alternatives I probably wouldn't even mind them. But there are games such as Super Meat Boy, The Binding of Isaac, Dead Cells that have MUCH better controls. This game compensates by having (from what I can see) slower combat. That's all fine but even with slow combat I am still getting hit. You can say "get gud" and you might be right but it doesn't FEEL right. When I get hit in a game like Cuphead (which also have very good controls) I don't feel like it's the controls or the game's fault - that's 100% on me. But in this game I might be doing all the right things from my perspective and still get hit. And while it might be my fault - it's just not fun when you are battling controls instead of utilizing them to play the game efficiently. Another good example could be Transistor. It's also has slower-paced combat but the sense of control is THERE. Play ANY of those games I mentioned and you would not want to play this game anymore. I certainly didn't. While it might be indie project and I don't want to beat indies to the ground (since they sometimes provide gameplay not seen in any other game or a clever spin on the existing formula) - it's still no excuse for this game to have poor controls. Is there anything good about it? Graphics look nice. And the music picked my interest (I might listen to it separately from the game). But the game - unless there is a major patch that improves controls - I am not touching this game ever again. TLDR: The game that was ruined by the fundamental thing of any game - controls.
Oh wow I finished this game in 3 hours. Just a heads up: I finished the main campain once. I didn't go through any of the additional modes as it seems it's more of what the game already offers. Fallen Angel is a weird game. Right from the options, it feels like it's meant to be a speedrun-only game. And I feel like that's the optimal way to play it if you want to make the most of it. Playing it as an RPG will make the game way easier than it could be. But it also becomes a necessity as I felt like the enemies' combat design is not very coherent. The story is nothing spectacular. You're on a quest to fight God basically. Despite this, you're the good guy, as the old man has gone mad apparently. There's nothing hidden in dialogs or item descriptions as far as I've seen, so there's not a lot to dig in. There's also voice acting. The bosses' ones are not bad, but the friendly NPCs aren't great. Still, for how short the game can be, they don't overstay their welcome. For some reason there's dialogue options, but nothing changes gameplay-wise. The pixel art is nice, and unlike some, more recent, pixel-art games that I've seen, it's mostly hand made. I haven't seen a lot of rotating, blurred animations that are present in other titles such as Eldest Souls or Souls Gambit. It's more akin to Hyper Light Drifter. The gameplay itself it not really deep. You can find power ups and you get more weapons the more you progress into the game, but not all of them are practical, especially in the harder parts of the game. You have your gun (which I stopped using, as bullets are currency); a meter to enter a special form (which I felt clunky, as you lose your dodge for a charge attack, and you cannot heal); and your various sword attacks. For some reason they added ledges which you can grab to while jumping. Not a fan of ledge jumping in general, but here it feels very pointless. Why are we going from fast-paced combat to clunky ledge jumps? Basic enemies can be cheesed easily once you get some upgrades, but it makes you want to dodge them if you don't. It is not required to kill any basic enemy in this game in order to beat it. They don't feel like they have patterns, rather you need ways to cheese them in order to kill them. The halberd guy, which is a basic enemy you encounter very early in the game, blocks all your basic attacks. While you can get one auto after they attack, you're incentivized to use any other kind of attack you have at your disposal, as you're rarely fighting them 1 on 1. It's way faster anyway. Bosses instead can be dumb easy, to the point where a combination of 2 upgrades (stamina regeneration and damage while dodging) is enough to kill them; up to not difficult, but that have quite confusing counter measures to adopt in order to beat them. As in they have gimmicks, so they don't all feel the same, but it isn't satisfying to beat them either, as they can feel ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ every now and then. On top of all of this, the game is not buggy, but it feels like it. Not game breaking, reset required, or some random ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. But I got stucked in the environment every now and then, while dodging or jumping. You can un-stuck yourself by jumping again usually. I also felt like the game has problems with high refresh rates and controller inputs, but I haven't figured it out yet. It also suffers from the classic problem intop-down platforming: jumping is weird, and the camera for some reason goes upwards instead of downwards when jumping. Just to make it less clear of where you're landing.. Oh, and you need borderless gaming in order to get it to work borderless. As I said at the beginning, I played only through the main campaign once. Punishment mode is meant to make it more interesting, adding a map (which doesn't exist in your first playthrough..), changing some bosses, adding others and such. The changes are welcome, but they should not be unlockable after your first run. Especially without some added polish. Ending thoughts: All in all I would recommend this game while on sale. I think I got it a while back through Humble Bundle. It's not a bad game, but I feel like it could've used some more polish and some more thought into gameplay. The flaws are thrown right in your face as they appear, and while they don't break the game, you're often left wondering why they're even present in the first place. You can especially see the progress the devs made from their very first iteration of this game on their youtube channel. There has been a lot of work without a doubt, and they kept working at it long after the release. I feel that with the punishment mode update, and some more thought overall, this game could've been a blast. Despite the tag, I wouldn't reccomend it to metroid-vania fans. I feel like it's more suitable for boss rush fans, or action games fans. If you end up liking the game (or rather its gameplay), there's more than enough content for your purchase. Especially at lower prices.
It's just not that good.
Cool ideas, sup-par execution. On paper, this game seems up my alley. Judeo-christian mythos and playing as Lucifer rising from hell and smashing his way up through heaven; sticking it to God. But, it wasn't. To prevent it sound like I'm dunking on this game, because I don't hate it, I'll try to alternate positives with the negatives, though I have more to say on the negatives. Combat's kinda clunky. There's moments when it shines, such as when I figured out spam rolling is the key to victory. That was kinda fun, and that play pattern works decently well. But unfortunately there's really nothing else to it other than melee with left click and shoot with right click. All other tech introduced including aerial combat, knockups, or heavy attacks, just feel bad to use. For example, when you unlock heavy attack, hold down LMB to heavy. But it doesn't do it right away, no. You have to do a regular attack first, then the game recognizes that you're holding it down so THEN it starts winding up your heavy attack. For another example, the knockup attack requires you press space and left-click at the same time. But the window in which you have to do that is so frame-perfect that I quickly gave up trying to use it as it was just too inconsistent. I'll admit, I didn't make it super far into the game, so there may be some tech that I'm missing. But as far as the skeleton for combat goes, there's just not a lot there. And what is there is ok-to-not really functional. The art style is kinda cool. Some of the assets are good and things look pretty cool sometimes. The animated cutscenes are a tad cringe, with Lucifer looking a bit like an edgelord, but hey I'm willing to buy into it. Feels like the art quality coulda been upped a bit, but again hey, if the core gameplay can prop it up, then it's more than serviceable. It doesn't. For instance, there's this one enemy like a holy blue knight that looked pretty cool. That kinda thing is badass to me. Then I quickly lost all respect for it when I realized it was a slow, lumbering melee mob that had no defense, no tech, and would just walk at you as you kill it. I don't think I ever got hit by that enemy. Ever. Instead of thinking it was awesome, it became pathetic. Which leads into my next point. (Whoops, this positive turned into a partial negative.) Combat was either way too easy or way to hard. There were times I was dying on cooldown in what seemed like a beginner area to beginner mobs (not necessarily a problem, and totally willing to take responsibility for sucking at a game initially) but then I had that aforementioned moment where I realized spam rolling to dodge is the key to victory. Then I proceeded to slam dunk every single enemy on my path, including bosses. There was a really disappointing moment where I summoned this big mech titan thing and I'm like "heck yeah, this'll probly be a tough fight." And then I proceeded to dumpster dive him without coming close to breaking a sweat, or even having to try beyond very simple execution. After that fight is when the game began to feel hollow and empty for me. The level design is kinda boring. (Whoops, two negatives in a row.) The level design doesn't feel really interesting. Also, kind of related, I figured out you can literally just run past all the enemies with almost no reason to fight them at all unless there's keys spread around that map. These two things wouldn't be too bad on they're own, except combined together and with the fact that the gameplay loop isn't fun enough to support it, helped to reinforce my aforementioned feeling of the game being hollow and empty. After these things, I just felt no desire to continue the game. Finally: I have hope for the developer. I didn't hate what I saw here. There are glimmers of a pretty good game here, it just needed more polish and another pass. Or, passes. It's not unfinished persay...but there were multiple times where I'd encounter any of these issues and feel a veteran game designer with know-how would observe it and then come back to try to iterate; to make it better. Overall, cool concept, decent attempt. As a small indie dev with no experience (I can only assume,) this was a very commendable attempt. Which is why: I'm not going to refund it. (Though I thought about it.) Given that I bought this game on 70% sale for about 5 bucks, and that I have hope for the dev, I'm going to leave my money in their hands, and encourage them to try again with their next game, and hope they can aspire to make games that live up to their vision. All that said, I cannot recommend, unless you really, really like medroidvanias and you play each and every one you can get your hands on. If so, feel free to throw down 5 bucks on this one when it's on sale, give it a spin, and tell me your perspective as a veteran of the genre (I'm not) and how I'm wrong or what you thought they actually did good.
P.S.
Additional thoughts that I'm lazy to edit into previous sections: Demon form sucks! It should be cool, but because it can't dodge, aka no i-frames, its just a big lumbering ball of death-death for a you that is, because enemies will goon you and ♥♥♥♥ you up. So you have to sit with this burning pentagon in the corner of your screen just asking you to "power up into big mode!" And you're like "no thank you, please." The weird white sprite-spirit enemies were pretty enjoyable They oddly were the highlight of my short experience with they game as they were decently challenging and I had to learn their pattern. Once I learned their pattern they weren't a big deal, but still stands. Competently designed enemy. Flight was weird, floaty, unclear where you were above the ground plain, and killed me a lot. What it says on the tin. Just that. Maybe I'll go check out a youtube video just to see the story, as I'm kind of intrigued by that. Review over.
This game has a lot going for it, especially if you can scoop it on sale. Pleasant Hyper Light Drifter-esque visuals, fluid gameplay, interesting weapons, unique story. There isn't an abundance of options here, but there is enough for what it is, and the game world feels nicely realized. If you like top-down action hack 'n slash/shooters, you could do a lot worse.
My first negative steam review. I really did like the concept- playing as Lucifer and fighting your way through the whole cast of the bible in a Hyper Light Drifter-esque theme seemed really really cool. And* the angels have fully voice acted lines? Sign me up. The addition of jumping and combat while flying/gliding was also something I was really looking forward to. Despite my negative experience with this game, I do think it has a lot of potential if its issues, listed below, get fixed. My main problem with the game is the bugs. Holy hell, the bugs. Audio bugs, gameplay bugs, terrain bugs, you name it, the game's got it. I fight a boss and get stuck inside a block and die instantly because I can't move. And when I try to jump out of the block, I land and, of course, I'm met with a whole second of landing lag, because that's definitely a good gameplay design in a fast-paced action game. This is a bit of a side tangent, but why for the love of satan do you have landing lag after you jump? Is it to nerf jumping because it would be too strong in a game like this? Is it to nerf fun because aerial combat would be way too fun if I could just keep jumping and using that kick-ass aerial combo that's straight out of kingdom hearts? I will never know.Moving on, for some reason the game seems to be poorly optimized and lags the hell out of my computer when I run it. At first I thought it was just the FPS, so I turned it up, but no, no matter what FPS setting its on, it lags to hell and back.I don't know what it is, and for how fast-paced some of the bosses are, the lag makes the game nigh unplayable. For how little hardware requirements there are to play this game, I don't know why it lags so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ much.If there is a fix for the lag, I'd love to try it out and replay the game again because I really feel like I could have finished the game despite the bugs if it weren't for the abysmal gameplay performance. So yeah. With a heavy heart, I've uninstalled by the time I finished writing this and I can't say I recommend this game to anyone with how unplayable the lag makes it.Right now, I'd give it a 3/10, but maybe if it was playable and the minor-but-reoccurring bugs were fixed (like the terrain/object clipping) and annoying gameplay mechanics like the landing lag were revised, the game as a concept could be as high as an 8/10.
Fallen Angel is a pixel art slash and dash-beat em up- top downish-metroidvana thingy with a lil rpg elements sprinkled on. It has a slash and dash mechanic similar to hyper light drifter, everyone who likes that game will say its a knock off of it like Unsighted, Resolution, etc. It has the kind of charm you get from smaller indie games, but this also is where the games faults arise. The characters and all enemies, dialogue- is very flat. no depth, no other expansion of lore, aside from a sentence or two connecting Lucifer to whatever Archangel in the Bible you're facing off. Lucifer is quite basic at the start, with little strength and abilities, this soon changes and at some point you become the all powerful fallen son of god, Then it almost seems that the bosses don't pose much of any threat, if anything the games difficulty decreased with me over time. The game doesn't have much direction, it is somewhat aimless, and hasn't any videos (that i saw) on Youtube and I think I just enjoyed spacing out roaming to uncover this unknown game. Fallen Angel is great for someone who has performance restrictions on your PC. Fallen Angel is good for humans that like Pixel Art Games and wants a game that you can spend a day or two playing. Fallen Angel is not good for organisms who wish for deeper meaning, Rad soundtracks and story driven gameplay. I would suggest this game to someone who really enjoys Pixel art aesthetics with hack and slash gameplay without it being a dark souls level of difficulty. I wouldn't suggest this to everyone however, as it truly falls short of a great game, and if this game had some polishing it would be easier to recommend, you have to appreciate how imperfect it is.
