I was a huge fan of the original Slayin on mobile 10 or so years ago--so I was surprised and delighted to discover there's a sequel on Steam! From my quick first impressions, I really like it. It's quite a bit more complex than the original mobile game--which is fitting given the platform. It also works perfectly on Steam Deck, not sure why it's not verified yet. This game is great, and an absolute steal at this price. Get it!
Full disclosure. As of writing this review, I've only played the story mode. If you remember playing (or still playing) the first Slayin, you'll enjoy this game. I've been playing the first one on android for the past 10 years and had no idea there was a second one until yesterday. Slayin 2 takes the concept of the first game and enhances it to fit a new device and generation. You'll notice that pretty quickly as there's now 4 action-buttons, compared to the 1 from the first game. These buttons are jump, ability, switch lane and some super ability that i haven't gotten to yet. Even if you've recently played another arcade-like game like this, the two lanes really change things up. Are there no enemies nearby to continue the combo? Switch lane. A boss has an attack that you're too slow to avoid? Switch lane. Are you getting bored? Switch lane. Weaving between the two lanes to avoid damage and keep the combo going is one of the most satisfying things you'll experience in a game. It doesn't matter who you are, there will be a character that fits your playstyle. And if you start to feel bored you can just try another character. Some characters are better in some situations. There are 8 characters and from what I've seen, all of them have a really different playstyle. One of the best parts is that this doesn't nullify the first game. The developer really understood the core of the original, kept that and changed pretty much everything else. In other words, you can continue to play both without one "destroying" the other. The only bad thing that I noticed is that when you walk across some bigger environments and the camera has to move, it seems like it's lagging-ish. I don't think this is the case as if you stop moving (even just for a millisecond) and then continue everything is fine. I never experienced this during normal gameplay though. So, if you're still reading this and are into arcade-ish games, even just a little. Buy it. I cannot recommend this game enough. There’s many hours of fun for a very cheap price. PS: I heard a rumor that if this game sells well, we might get a remake of the first one. Then you can be Slayin both on the computer and in the bedroom (on your phone of course).
An awesome sequel, it holds up even tho the last game was released way too many years ago for mobile. Amazing animations and sound design. I'm very pleased that they decided to also code a co-op. In terms of difficulty, it seems it has got easier to beat, since there is more flexibility when moving your character. Similarities aside, boss design is cool as well as story progression and dialogs. It lacks some major accsessibility options like: distinguish different lane contents, projectiles not being visible at all, violent camera shake adjustments, color coding enemies, shop convenience placement and some other minor details.
Buying this again on Steam since I already have it on the Switch! Super fun arcade game to pass time with. The story mode is a really nice touch as well, and adds a lot of variety from the original. New characters are a blast to play and the way you can unlock them through the story mode is a bonus as in the original you had to pay for the last three characters. Ever since I got the original on mobile, I've had the game on every phone since. Love supporting small developers when I can. Pixel Licker has a true gem on their hands! Keep it up!
Loved the mobile game 10 years ago Adoring the sequel PC game now With the added lane and the extra action button it adds a layer of depth that the original didn't have. While some aspects still need some refining, it never felt better to run through hordes of enemies while racking up a giant combo! Truly a hidden gem that deserves more recognition.
A super colourful and charming action arcade game, with a fun story mode where you can upgrade your weapons and rebuild a ruined town. I was also delighted learn I could play with arcade stick (unless I am missing something) and it worked without any fuss.
I was replaying the original Slayin when I learned that this game just came out, and there are very few times that I've felt that excited. It's so good... It's quickly becoming something special to me. It does more than just build off of the foundations of the original - Slayin 2 reimagined the systems and mechanics in a way that fixes some critical flaws and makes for a truly sequel-worthy experience. While the arcade mode of the original Slayin is back and better than ever, the focus this time around is on a story mode with a level select and side quests. I think this is smart because not everyone will want to go through the whole game in one sitting in order to see the later levels, especially with how many more levels Slayin 2 has over the original. Weapons feel more balanced this time around, too - there are still a few stinkers that I have a hard time justifying using like the Lightfoot's Dagger, but it's a far cry from situations like Slayin 1's Ninja where only two or three of their weapons were really viable.
