It's a fun shooter that falls somewhere between Wolfenstein 3D and Doom in terms of its level design. The enemies don't do anything particularly interesting but the game is moderately challenging, at least for me. There's an emphasis on environment exploration and finding secrets which I enjoy.
Extraneum, developed by David Jalbert and published by Hellforge Studios, is a retro-inspired first-person shooter that pays homage to the classic shooters of the 1990s while carving out its own distinct identity. From the moment you step into the game’s dystopian world, it’s clear that Extraneum embraces the fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled gameplay that defined early shooters like Doom and Quake, but it also injects modern design sensibilities that elevate the experience beyond simple nostalgia. Set within a mysterious high-security facility called Project EXTRANEÜM, players take on the role of a security guard thrown into chaos as the facility becomes overrun with bioengineered monstrosities. The narrative is sparse but effective, providing just enough context to motivate your descent through the sprawling, increasingly dangerous levels. The game’s core appeal lies in its level design and exploration elements. Unlike many straightforward shooters, Extraneum encourages players to thoroughly explore each of its 24 meticulously crafted levels. Hidden passages, secret rooms, and scattered upgrades reward those who take the time to search beyond the obvious paths. These upgrades, which include health, armor, and ammunition enhancements, feel like genuine rewards that encourage curiosity and make the challenge more manageable as you progress. This focus on exploration gives the game a layered feel, turning each level into a puzzle of sorts, where uncovering secrets becomes just as important as clearing out enemies. Combat in Extraneum is fluid, fast, and brutally satisfying. The arsenal includes a diverse set of 12 weapons, from trusty pistols and rapid-fire machine guns to powerful shotguns and more exotic armaments. Each weapon feels distinct in its handling and effectiveness, encouraging players to adapt their approach depending on the enemies they face and the layout of the environment. The game features 12 enemy types, each with unique attack patterns and behaviors, demanding that players think on their feet and switch tactics dynamically. Boss fights punctuate the campaign and provide intense, memorable confrontations that test not only your reflexes but your ability to strategize and use the environment to your advantage. Visually, Extraneum embraces a pixelated, retro 3D aesthetic that beautifully captures the spirit of early polygonal shooters without feeling dated or clunky. The environments are richly detailed, blending grim industrial settings with eerie sci-fi elements that help immerse the player in the unsettling atmosphere of the facility. Lighting effects and environmental details create a sense of depth and mood that contrast well with the sharp, colorful sprites of enemies and weapons. This art style strikes a delicate balance between nostalgia and modern polish, making the game accessible to fans of classic shooters while still appealing to newer players who appreciate stylized visuals. While the game excels in its core design, it’s not without imperfections. Some players have reported occasional bugs and performance drops, particularly in larger levels with numerous enemies and complex geometry. These issues, while rare, can momentarily disrupt the flow and immersion but don’t significantly detract from the overall experience. Additionally, the game’s heavy emphasis on exploration and secret hunting may not appeal to players who prefer a more linear, straightforward shooter. Those looking for quick, run-and-gun action might find Extraneum’s slower pace and attention to detail less immediately gratifying, but for players willing to engage deeply with the level design, the rewards are substantial. In summary, Extraneum is a thoughtfully crafted throwback that successfully blends the best elements of classic first-person shooters with modern touches. Its intricate level design, engaging combat mechanics, and atmospheric presentation create an experience that feels both familiar and fresh. The game challenges players to be both precise in combat and thorough in exploration, making each victory feel earned and satisfying. For fans of retro shooters or anyone looking for a challenging, atmospheric FPS with a strong sense of place and personality, Extraneum is a standout title well worth playing. Rating: 8/10

wolfenstein 2
A fantastic little shooter with slick presentation and wonderfully cute pixel art. Though a good reference point, It almost feels like a disservice calling it a Wolf-like when there's a lot more to see here. Perfectly focused, sci-fi dungeon exploration with memorable guns, monsters, fun writing, unique levels and meaningful upgrades. I get exhausted from a lot of shooters overstaying their welcome, but this is so remarkably scoped I 100%'d. Every single secret. Absolute banger.
