Reviews
I REALLY want to give this game a decidedly good review, as I am still playing it and for the *most* part enjoying it. But after a certain amount of time, you'll start to recognize that the game might just too bloated with artifically playtime-inflating trash and generally poor game design. Exploration tasks take entirely too long, and the puzzles that come with exploration quickly become nothing short of mind-numbingly tedious and aggravating. I generally like to feel as though my time and patience is being respected, so it's becoming a struggle to continue playing. The WORST part about this game has got to be the introduction to rifts, a hot mess of an endgame activity. It is an unapologetic trainwreck of a bullet-hell with unnecessarily oppressive win conditions, and I just got thrown into it at level 24. I'm not exaggerating when I say this has got to be one of the most poorly-designed activities I've ever experienced in games with similar loot mechanics. I didn't ask for this and I have never had any intention of even engaging with this game mode because of all the rightfully negative feedback I've read from other players regarding rifts. So why am I being thrown into this nonsense against my will? I'm literally in the middle of it as I write this review, and I just want to fail out of the instance and get back to what I was focused on previously. If you're looking for a game to slake your thirst for a spiritual successor to Freelancer, this ain't it; it's not grounded enough, it's certainly not a simulator either (and to its credit, doesn't pretend to be), and Everspace 2 seems to suffer from an ongoing identity crisis (is this game trying to be a space shooter? An arcadey looter-shooter? Or is it a puzzle game disguised as both?). As an aside, it's still amazing to me that virtually no studio has yet been able to recapture what Freelancer did in a competent or meaningful way. If you can get past the glaring flaws in game design, the ship combat IS actually satisfying in the context of the overworld (main/side missions, radiant missions, etc.); it's just that when you interact with High-Risk Areas and rifts for gearing, or commit to completionist goals such as 100% exploration, the game starts to wear out its welcome. If these seem like cons that can be overlooked in favor of generally good gameplay, try the demo. Otherwise, pass.
EVERSPACE 2
I had this game for a while and decided to wait it out until all additional content got released then got busy on other titles like usual! Years ago, I had participated in ES1 KickStarter campaign and I was pleasantly surprised how that rogue-like game turned out to be. Once ROCKFISH Games announced a new KickStarter Campaign for a sequel and with a open world-like exploration focused game, I was quite excited and kinda expected a "FREELANCER" kinda game. Now having finished the whole campaign and DLC content missions, I can say this is a pretty good space looter/shooter game. This sequel ticks almost all the good boxes for a quality space game but yeah, it is not perfect as well so let's pan out the positives and negatives aspect I could gather on.
POSITIVES:
+Addictive gameplay! The shooting mechanics works great and you do have a decent amount of weapons variety and quality to pick from. +Worthy exploration to do and uncover goodies (mostly mineral resources but sometimes, you can get lucky and uncover really good items. It does depend on RNG sadly). +Crafting/upgrade system is worth using and can save your @$$ for real. +The visual fidelity is impressive! +Story starts out great and feels decent throughout most of the game. Wrath of the Ancients DLC expands on the story and seems to open up the whole galaxy for a future game. +PERFECT ULTRAWIDE MONITOR SUPPORT. +Overall stable game with few bugs (had to restart a few missions at times).
NEGATIVES:
-Some difficulty spikes at strange timings. -No reputation system like in FREELANCER. Basically if you go hostile to friendlies, you get a bounty that you can just pay off quickly or wait it out in a safe space. Quite basic system! -Music is hit or miss. At times I like it but at other times, it is anticlimatic. -Lacks ships variety. Only the same selection but in different tier quality. You do get to unlock the Okkar Wraith alien ship (still cost 1M Credits) but that it at the VERY END... quite useless if you have already did everything! -Gamebreaking bug at the last mission "The Peace of the Ancients" where that glowing light you have to follow kept getting stuck. I tried reloading the game multiple times, did files verification... nothing worked... until for some reason, I could get the mission to work by enabling DLSS, DLAA, Reflex, Frame Generation, etc... upped the Gamma a bit... and that glowing light wasn't stuck anymore. This was quite a frustrating and a truly BAD mission design that should had been made into a simple cinematic instead!
OVERALL:
For what is worth, this is a solid space game that is very fun and addictive. You will have MANY gameplay hours to put into it. At times, it does remind me of the best space games ever made like "STARFLIGHT" & "FREELANCER" but in a different "looter/shooter" way. The latter games offer more exploration IMO with better rewards, more alien races too which is something I really hope ROCKFISH Games add in an eventual EVERSPACE 3... more systems to explore, more alien races, more alien ships, better rewards and not all RNG too unlike ES2.
RECOMMENDATION:
Easy recommend for any space game fans out there! I do hope ES3 won't take too long to cook and I really hope that eventual sequel (unsure if it's confirmed) will add way more systems to explore, more alien races and ships to interact with, more ships of different kind too, etc... and add more factions with a reputation system while at it!
I don't know how to explain it, but I feel like if I keep playing this game I'll obtain depresssion (and NOT because it has deep dramatic plot or something). Game feels like playing an MMO after it's servers were shutdown. Crazy emptiness and pointless of everything. Everspace is trying to be (No Man's Sky + Starfield), but in the end I would rather play NMS and Starfield separately, and avoid Everspace.

held back by inventory and upgrade management, collectathon, mmo-esque in scope of numbers and levels and wotnot; very nice looking at least
- After 130 hours, I've managed to complete the game (using Sentinel) and all possible achievements (38/58). The remaining 20 are from 2 seperate DLCs. - My most favorite games growing up were from the Descent series: Descent, Descent II, Descent Freespace, Descent Freespace II. I like that Everspace 2 included different environments like the old Descent games, such as lava, water, ice, and most importantly, underground tunnels and mines. It was nostalgic in a sense. - The puzzles were trivial and mostly enjoyable, specifically playing with the Ancient Lenses and Reflecting Panels. I had many eureka moments while solving. At times, I had to Youtube for a few hints. - The dialogues and cutscenes were interesting enough that I didn't skip. Fallon Pango was my favorite. - The music did however get repetitive and I disabled it and used my own before completing the first system. If I could make any suggestion; - Remove the missions for "kiss the sun in every system". Once is enough. - I had to do 100 ramen deliveries at the end just to get the highest renown, which by then, the rewards were obsolete. - Consider adding Co-op - Consider adding a global statistics leaderboard for all players
Amazing game, love it for so many reasons! If you like Diablo (Torchlight, PoE...) and space themed games, or if you loved Freelancer back in the day and wish there was a modern sequel, this is pretty much a must have. The greatest pros in my eyes: - controls and combat feel amazing. I love that while it is quite arcade-y (which is not my preference) and responsive, it still feels like you are in space, not in atmosphere, due to just enough inertia and 6 degrees of freedom maneuvering being quite prominent - plenty of variety in terms of gameplay, lots of cool side missions (loved them!), puzzles (loved them! - many simple or cookie-cutter ones, but quite a few creative and fun ones), random jobs and encounters of many different types, racing, nice achievements to hunt for, there is always something else to do when you get bored with one activity (but if you just want combat, there's plenty of it as well!) - gorgeous looking and amazingly varied environments - by that, I mean handcrafted, deliberate, lore-fitting environments, not something procedural like No Man's Sky (no shade to that game, it also has great variety, but that's a different kind) - lots of customization to match your play-style, different ship classes, pilot and ship passives, devices (i.e. active skills), many different weapon types. I also love the visual customization options for the ships. - it has its own interesting lore, unique identity and charm (building on the foundations of the first Everspace). Yes, there are cliches and reused elements here and there, but as a whole it comes together as a distinct universe, with interesting places, factions and several memorable characters you can get invested in - you can get immersed in this game, but a play session doesn't require a huge time commitment on its own, you can get right into the meat of it and have a quick, fun run for half an hour, which is not something I managed to do in otherwise immersive games like Elite: Dangerous (maybe it's just me)
Expansions
The base game on its own is already great, but the expansions (Titans and Wrath of the Ancients) make it even better. In base Everspace 2, the world felt a bit small to me in terms of number of star systems (in terms of areas, there are quite a few), for example compared to something like Freelancer. However, the Wrath of the Ancients expansion rounds it out quite well with the 4 new systems. Another bit of complaint I would have is that the end-game combat activities are a bit limited and repetitive in the base game (if you want to stick to high-level challenges and don't consider lower level missions), to which both expansions add some more variety, which is welcome.
Performance
I run it on higher settings for the amazing visuals, on a 1080p monitor, and my RTX 3060 with my Core i5-13600KF can mostly handle it just fine. Some areas where there is more stuff (large structures especially) can get a bit laggy (still playable), and with many enemies, it is not exactly buttery smooth either, so I wouldn't say it's the best optimized game ever, but it is not bad whatsoever. I also run it on Linux using proton, so that could affect performance as well.
TLDR: if you liked freelancer, this is the game you should buy and the studio you should watch. I absolutely and unequivocally loved this game. The realization for the story felt wanting, I wished I had better immersion on stations and had higher budget storylines to follow, but - also it didn’t matter as I ravenously wanted to complete the next missions. A master class in 3Cs for ship handling and UX. Great systemic fights. Smart design on systems. Tons to explore, but still a curated experience. I was itching for a space sim, and went back to Elite Dangerous and No man sky. The former was too much like flight simulator and the latter was too procedural / grindy. This game was a black hole for that itch, and the first time in a while I just played a game because I was engrossed in it. Don’t let it pass you radar.
