Reviews
This is one of those games which I would ideally give a "Mixed" review for, but steam doesn't allow such option. And whilst the line is very thin, I ultimately have to lean towards something, and as it stands I cannot recommend this game in its current state. Long story short - this game is abandoned with serious flaws still present. A few months ago, devs have made an announcement on their official discord that they are moving on to other projects, and the community manager has stated several times that there will be no more big patches. This is whilst there is still a wide plethora of technical issues left unresolved with the game. I myself have reported several - I will name some of them below. What's most egregious in this however, is the attitude of the studio. When I made an open complaint about this situation on the official discord, the community manager chimed in, and part of their statement was - to paraphrase - "If you don't like this, you can look for games from a different studio", which I guess is an advice I shall listen to, whilst advising you, dear readers, to do the same. Here's a few examples of the issues which have been reported, and which the devs apparently consider fine to leave in the final product (which by the way is priced at nearly a full AAA title level):

Item pickups no-clipping through asteroids and structures, making them impossible to retrieve (btw, this issue is practically as old as THE GAME ITSELF, and to my knowledge is present in the earliest public demos where item pickups are a thing). Items never despawn, so if you get one lodged in a wall within one of the non-random locations - enjoy your new permanent landmark on the radar.
The "10% chance to reset device cooldowns" attribute having a chance to glitch your ship's ULT, putting it in a state where it cannot be activated until you reload a save or go to another area
Some spatial bypass locations (especially in WOTA DLC) have enemies spawning close, resulting in player potentially getting spawnkilled during the unskippable "teleporting in" animation.
Laser beams randomly becoming invisible
Some WOTA encounters are missing dialogue lines
Titans DLC activating a recurring, annoying voice notification for a repeatable endgame activity. These notifications can interrupt gameplay and CANNOT BE TURNED OFF.
Weapon balance is out of control, especially regarding Legendary items. There's practically little to no reason to use legendary weapons during late game, as in a vast majority of cases they are objectively inferior to regular guns.
Cloak mechanic has no consistency whatsoever. Sometimes you're detected whilst perfectly still, sometimes you're not, even when actively firing guns, and there seems to be no logic to it, nor any feedback to whether you're currently detectable or not.
Horribly inconsistent rules regarding to what's vulnerable to what. For example, Ancient Beacons are for some strange reason untargettable by warfare devices... but at the same time vulnerable to debuffs that some of those devices apply. But not all of them. They are also targettable by lock-on missiles... auto-tracking missiles ignore them, and they do not trigger mines. There's no rhyme or reason to it.
Harsh, arbitrary limit on homebase item storage. This game is part a looter RPG, where much of the appeal is a wide potential for synergies and combos within various item loadouts... and you can easily run out of space for said items. Seriously, in the endgame it's a common practice to dedicate whole ships to the sole purpose of being mules, perpetually sitting in a hangar just to store gear.
Egregious ancient rift balance. To illustrate - rift boss mutators range from laughable ("boss can periodically move") all the way to "RNG has decided that you lose on the spot today" (such as the "boss is surrounded by indestructible shield, forcing you to fly inside and fight at point blank". I don't think I have to explain why having to fight A BOSS at POINT BLANK RANGE is quite possibly one of the deadliest positions you can find yourself in. And you can straight up ALT+F4 if you currently have a long range build).
Endgame full of dead content. There's no consistent money sinks, and there is literally zero reason to do jobs - there's nothing useful they offer at that point, and do not offer any challenge anyway for the endgame gear.
Also there's no modding support, so all of the above is permanent. Nobody will ever be able to do anything about these things, and it will stick with the game forever. Of course I will edit this review if these actually get fixed at some point, but I wouldn't hold my breath for it. And I could go on and on, but this should already give you a clear picture. The fact that someone from the dev team looked at this littany of bugs, issues, and oversights, and decided "yup, that seems like a finished game to me", and then the community manager comes along and basically says "if you don't like it, then go play something else" is utterly disgraceful. And I'm saying all of this whilst considering myself a FAN of these people's works. I've been an avid player of the devs' products all the way back in the J2ME times, with Deep 3D and Galaxy on Fire series being gems of my childhood gaming. To see my heroes abandoning a great game in such a horrendous state and asking THIS price for it is seriously heartbreaking. That is nothing short of lack of respect to one's own work. Because it is otherwise a genuinely good game, if you're willing to grit your teeth and sit through all of the annoying nonsense it has you deal with. At the moment, this is the closest we can get to a successor to Freelancer. The combat is satisfying, the story writing is superb, and the constant interactions between Adam and HIVE are some of my all time favorite comedy I've experienced in games. In general, this game is fun. But is it $50 fun, plus about $35 price in DLCs? Definitely not in this shoddy state.
I was all set to give a positive review until I came across some extremely aggravating gameplay. I'm not one of those masochists that likes the impossibly hard gameplay. I find it frustrating and aggravating and not fun at all. It makes me want to stopm playing this game and play something that's fun. The races are stupid hard. I feel sorry for the person willing to spend the amount of time it must take to even finish a race let alone beat the record and get gold or platinum. And there's a challenge to "find and repair the buoys". It's hard enough looking for a needle in a haystack, but when they blindfold you it's just a f u c k i n g joke. They literally have and area where the fog or gas or dust or whatever is so thick you can't see anything. I'm just banging around with no idea where I am, where I was, or where I'm going. It was fun until it wasn't.
So the game itself, the graphics, the immersion, combat, loots system, its awesome, it really is, B U T .... BUT.... It gets to a point where I found myself CONSTANTLY saying "WHY DO YOU DO THIS" out loud... Stupidly long searches for items, switches or whatever it is without a singly tiny clue as to where to start even. After countless immersion breaks from hitting a "SO WHERE THE F IS IT?!" wall I just lost the will to finish the game at lvl18. Its a story driven single player game, WHY torment the player with these pointless "wannabe rogue like" elements? Constant "find the needle in a haystack" moments... WHY?
Now that I've sunk over 36 hours into EVERSPACE™ 2, I'd like to share my thoughts. The game runs very smoothly for me. No crashes, no wild bugs, nothing to spoil the fun. Technically, everything feels polished, which, sadly, isn't always a given these days. The story is told in a pleasant way, often through images and dialogue, without constantly overwhelming you with text. You can tell that a lot of emphasis was placed on atmosphere. I often find myself wanting to do "just one more mission"—and then another two hours have vanished. Resources are almost always scarce. If you want to craft and upgrade, you can't avoid gathering them. I've found that, whenever possible, I also buy certain materials from the shop to get upgrades faster. This doesn't feel unfair, but rather like a conscious choice between time and resources. I really appreciate the little puzzles, like: Where's the battery to open a barrier or a container? These moments are a welcome change from the mindless shooting and noticeably liven up the gameplay. You're not just flying from one fight to the next; you actually have to use your brain for a bit. The ship battles are generally smooth and feel fast-paced. BUT: I'm over 50 now, and I'm finding that the keyboard isn't always as responsive as I'd like it to be in hectic situations. Deflecting missiles at the right moment, activating gadgets, or firing the shield generator just when the shield is completely down—it doesn't always work as smoothly for me as the game intends. Often, it ends up with me just firing at the enemies and praying I somehow survive the tough fights. It works surprisingly often… but not always. What I personally miss a bit is something like a bar or a quiet meeting place where you can just relax for a while. A place that briefly gives you the feeling of not being constantly rushed from one goal to the next. That would really enhance the atmosphere and allow the game a few more tranquil moments. The bottom line: EVERSPACE™ 2 is a lot of fun. The flying, combat, exploration, and short breaks for reflection blend together well. And most importantly: After all this time playing, I'm far from finished. There's still plenty to discover. Starts out really strong but gets tedious. I'd say play the demo and if you think you can repeat that gameplay loop for 30+ hrs then buy it. It has a few surprises and looks really nice especially the planetside levels, but then just stacks on piles of repetitive low-paying missions that all play out the same. The game is peppered with genius but is consistently marred by frustrating design decisions, like challenges where you have to find something but can't since it doesn't appear on radar and is impossible to find, or races that play like Superman 64 with the most annoying robot voice you've ever heard. The story is initially interesting but in the second area you're just going on one errand after an another and pushed to do all these tedious side-missions. Everything takes so much ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time and at the end of a play session I really gotta ask myself : "is this fun? Did I have fun at all?" and the answer is too often no. It's a real shame since there's some groundworks for a really fun game here, but not the repetitive grindy looter-shooter they designed here. You're better getting Everspace 1. I don't remember ever getting bogged down by tedium in that game and it's basically the same ship gameplay.
Store page is full of shooting, looting, flying, story, upgrading ships... well, they forgot some important details. This game is great... feels like a team of competent devs made it. Part of this dev team, however, was propably some mole, a troll, someone clearly insane, or maybe just stupid. You ask why? Features of this game are 90% fun, but the rest 10% (or maybe 50%, depends on how good you are) is just pure insanity - stupid puzzles where you seek item/s not shown on HUD. Space travel extremely slow (it take minutes to get between sectors... you can make it faster. If you complete some crazy tasks... like puzzles. Or searching multiple hidden items, then activating them under a time limit. I have never seen a space game that forces you to do so many garbage tasks that has nothing to do with ship combat. These tasks are even part of main story. I had to use google multiple times to find needed items... and considering the findings, i was not the only one unable to find the things, and i was not the only one who almost ragequit multiple times. Negative review it is. Game is good for most of the time. But it is bloated... full of mechanics that are not fun. If someone thought these tasks are fun... go develop some different genres, please.
I'm a few hours in now and unfortunately the gameplay loop already became very annoying. You spend a big chunk of your time traveling between jump points, would say at least 30%, the enemies seem to be the same 5 ship types over and over again, just with different levels. You can't just go straight for the main story either as you will be underleveled very fast, so you have to do the classic side quests like "kill x enemy" or "retrieve A and bring it to B" I'm in the 2nd Sector now and lost all motivation. Kinda sad, was a promising start.
