It's hard to be mad when I knew what I was getting into. Being an HD remaster, I can't fault it for flaws that I already knew existed on DS as this isn't my first experience with the. Setting up your own unique party and mapping is fun and relaxing (better on DS, but decent here), however the game places a lot of stock in a relatively poor battle system, and goes pretty hard with it. The game's brutality has less to do with knowledge of a battle system or party composition and more so with a massive grind to get your level up. Worse yet, the game has a tendency to place bosses a long ways through a dungeon, so look forward to spending 10 minutes of backtracking to the boss due to encounters. The game also make TP (this game's version of SP) extremely scarce and hard to recover in dungeons, making it pretty hard to enjoy the mapping when I have to backtrack to restore TP every 10 minutes. If this game still seems interesting to you, I advise you to get it VERY cheap.

The Etrian Odyssey series is one of the few Dungeon Crawler series where you can actually draw maps. I enjoy the series for both the fact that I can do cartography in-game and for the gameplay & story.
I had this game in 3DS but never get to complete it. Picked the game up in STEAM to try again and finished the main story. Is a simple dungeon crawler where you explore the place, beat the mobs, level up, rest up and continue to explore. There is no not much in terms of puzzles that is good for those that didnt like puzzle heavy dungeon crawlers of the west. Mulitple class to choose from and quite a number of skills to customize. However, i really hope that respec is done with easier ways instead of level down. Do note that you are unable to put all the skill points in the available skills so you have to choose. However. as long as you do not make Jacks of all trades, you should be fine. This game does suffer the flaw of all dungeon crawlers with many empty rooms and so besides mapping it out on your own, the scenary will get bored after some time. Neverthelss, it is easy to pick up and play on the go. Rate 7/10
The game is fine overall but It practically requires a teambuilding guide for a first playthrough. The biggest quality of this one is the environment and tone, it has a unique feel which probably has to do with it being the first game in the series. I may be biased since I played this series in order but I do look on this one fondly and would recommend it despite everything. I really hope we get a sixth game eventually. The HD version makes the game much quicker by allowing you to speed up combat, move faster, and having quicker menus but that's about it. A few skills have been slightly tweaked as well and the mapping tools are actually usable. Hopefully 4, 5, nexus, and the untolds get HD versions if nothing else.
TL;DR: Lots of backtracking/repitition. U-shaped, somewhat extreme difficulty curve. Nintendo-tier writing. Good game nonetheless. Flawed, but good casual game. Main painpoints: - No voice acting is a bummer - Expect Nintendo game writing. What little story that exists is just white noise to be tuned out. - Denuvo. - 63 hours for 100% completion (this is on the low end according to HowLongToBeat). - U-shaped difficulty curve. It starts off very hard when you have no skills and no items. It gets much easier as you scale, then becomes very hard again near the end when you reach level caps and equipment costs balloon. The first and final major bosses both required stat sheets, strategy guides, and trial and error from me to beat. - Probably too much backtracking. You only reach "checkpoints" every five floors. So often I'd make it to the seventh floor and want to heal, dump my loot, or recover from a persistent status effect. I'd then warp back to the main town and have to walk all the way back to the seventh floor from my checkpoint at the fifth floor. Every step you take is a chance at a random encounter, so I'd be grinding enemies the entire way. In the early game, warping back to the town like this requires an item that you probably can't afford, so this means doing the trip both ways. Positives: stable, remappable buttons/keybinds, good enough RPG elements (classes, skill trees, four equipment slots), good variety in enemies and encounters, straightforward achievements. A lot of the storytelling came from the background environments and enemy art rather than, well, the actual story.

It was a fun experience to first experience Etrian Odyssey.
