To preface, I think you'll only really like EO1 if you're already really into first person dungeon crawlers, cuz it doesn't have much else to offer apart from it's gameplay. There's not really a story, the artstyle is honestly just serviceable even if theres some cute designs, and the world isn't very interesting. This said I think what EO has to offer in gameplay is really solid even if its simplistic. Being able to draw the maps yourself offers a another level of engagement with the dungeon design that you usually don't feel when its automatically mapped (though if you dislike making maps yourself auto-mapping is still an option in settings). You get a lot of freedom with making your party composition, especially with the non-linear skill tree system, and I especially like how useful binds/ailments are in combat. The dungeons are generally solidly designed and the presence of FOEs, mini-bosses that wander the dungeon the same time you do, are interesting additions to the dungeon crawling formula that changes how you navigate the dungeon. I do think the game's difficulty and grindy-ness is a big issue, but thankfully the QoL additions address these well-enough. Honorable mentions go to quicksaving and in-battle analysis. They make the experience a lot smoother. A big QoL addition in particular is the presence of difficulty options, which let you change the game balance to something you're more comfortable with, and in my opinion Basic mode is the optimal difficulty since it strikes a balance of being challenging but not unfair (Fun fact: Expert mode is the original difficulty, so that should tell you how the original game's balance was like.) Picnic mode is astronomically easy but at least it makes grinding go faster since it increases EXP gain. Sadly its kind of a "band-aid on a gaping wound" type of solution since it still takes a while to grind people up. I think they would've been better off having a party level instead of individual ones since it really discourages experimenting with different party compositions when new guys always start at level 1 and exp gain is divided the more people are in the active party. This all said Etrian Odyssey I think is an overall solid and fun time for those who are looking to put another dungeon crawler, especially a retro-inspired one like this, under their belt.
Etrian Odyssey is a classic dungeon crawler. Descend into the forest and map your surrounding areas while fighting monsters with a self-created party of up to 5 characters with different classes. There is a rudimentary story, side quests and many unlockable items and equipments by selling monster drops. Etrian Odyssey HD is a remake of the first Etrian Odyssey game, which released on the DS all the way back in 2007. It plays very well on the Steam Deck, which is probably the closest you can get to the original feeling, and has a few additional features like a changeable difficulty and automapping. Speaklng of the latter, I would highly recommend turning it on. The original game had you map the dungeon surroundings yourself. It does sound fun, and I did it for the first 5 floors before giving up, because it's so much harder and annoying on a Steam Deck (or even mouse and keyboard) than it would've been on the DS where you can just use the stylus on the bottom screen as you go. In this version, you can't do that and have to open up a separate overlay every few steps to map, which gets very tiring. Automapping helps and there are even several degrees of severity - even on the strongest setting, you still have to put in doors, treasure chests and stairs yourself which I think is fair. I am sure it was much more fun on the DS with a bottom screen though. I get that, way back in the day, you didn't even have an in-game way to map a dungeon and had to use pen and paper, but I very much appreciated having the option here especially since this version loses the touch screen :-) Aside from that, there isn't much to say. If you ever played grid-based dungeon crawlers, this has all the bells and whistles, but not much more. Annoying random encounters, tons of dead ends, useless treasure chests and, above all, a certain charm that is hard to ignore and an addictive "just one more descent" feeling. It's a good game to kill time and there is even a bunch of postgame stuff which I didn't engage with. If you like accessible old school dungeon crawlers, you can't go very wrong with EO HD.
