It's a short cackle madly and don't stop running type of puzzle platformer where each level is a one-screen machine of unknown attributes, and the only way forward is to goat right into the gnashing gears of it and die till you've reverse engineered the thing. Hurl your mouse and perish, fool! Only then will you become wise! Then you know how it all works, and can clatter on through in seven seconds. Tripping through all the levels, knocking the doors of the mystic prison rapidly down, it's quite satisfying! The puzzle design really is a fine thing, though defaulting to the easier side, with multiple levels of finesse possible in most levels -- but the overall aesthetic, and the silly, strangely sincere feeling of spirituality the game puts off are what burned Escape Goat into my brain when I got it on GOG over a decade ago. A warlock goat, a daredevil mouse, captive philosopher sheep, and a mysterious Master of Chains . . . I feel like it's trying to tell me something. (Think the game is too easy? Then you can try the free "All Intensive Purposes" pack after you beat it, but after going through four or five of these levels, I think it's more trollish than I can stand right now.)
Very entertaining and fun game, but anyone trying to play it on high end pc should limit the screen frame rate to 60 using Nvidia control panel, otherwise the game is way too fast and unplayble.
A gem from the golden age of indies with a light bit of plot atop tight, challenging gameplay. How challenging you ask? Well, let us say that this is one of those games that will have you making noises with your mouth you did not think yourself capable of.
I was pleasantly surprised by Escape Goat. It's not really a puzzle platformer like it claims to be -- timing and precision are going to be much more important than cleverness, though it's still fun to figure out how you're supposed to get the achievements. Controls are smooth and the game is very polished for being so inexpensive, though I suppose that's a prerequisite, considering the slightest imprecision will send Mr. Goat to yet another one of his deaths. The levels can get pretty tough, but even so, it's not a very long game. Only took me about 5 hours to beat it and get most of the achievements. There's bonus post-game content that I had a go at, but haven't finished -- it's much tougher than any of the main levels. Has cute Steam emotes too!
Escape Goat is a short puzzle platformer about a Goat solving puzzles to escape a prison. Overall I enjoyed this game and it was a good challenge. I liked the levels where you have all the options in front of you, and you have to slowly maneuver your way through obstacles and press the right switches at the right time to get to the exit. The game is pretty good at giving you the “a-ha” moment, and most levels are satisfying to clear. There were some levels more focused on fast-paced platforming and reaction time, and a handful felt like I was playing Super Meat Boy again. The controls are tight and responsive, plus there are tricks you can pull to get back your mid-air jump and dash, so these levels were still really fun and rewarding. I just think some of them strayed too far from the “puzzle” aspect of a puzzle platformer. My least favorite levels were the ones that had so many moving pieces, I never actually deciphered what was going on or what the solution was - I just kind of used trial and error until I was randomly successful and could move on. But again, these are few. The little mouse buddy you can send out makes it really fun to plan out puzzle solutions, and any level with the magic hat that lets you continuously swap places with him are my favorite. The game also has an open format, so you don’t need to finish every puzzle to escape your first time. I always appreciate options. It feels like many modern indies pick one or two ideas to go all in on and polish to a sheen. Comparatively, Escape Goat definitely feels like an earlier indie - ambitious with lots of ideas, maybe lacking a little focus. Nothing mind blowing, but still pretty fun.

It's Escape Goat!
Jumping through puzzles like a goat on a cheese hunt. Every challenge feels like a wise cat’s hint, and I m still trying to find the exit and my basket before the cheese disappears!
