Sure, any kind of educational game will already scare off the majority of viewers by first impressions alone. But Equaline shows that with enough variety, and a focus on fast paced, frantic gameplay, the subject can be anything but boring. The trailer shows things well enough, so I’ll skip the explanation of gameplay mechanics. Draw lines, sum numbers, make the target value. Gameplay is fast and immediately responsive. The only limiting factor is how quickly you can process the answer yourself. There’s no penalty for highlighting the wrong sequence, so you can immediately readjust an incorrect start or exercise in some quick trial and error without worry. Drawing fast chains of numbers feels immensely satisfying, especially once you get into a good streak! There are two additional variants of the main Endless mode, but rather than acting as simple difficulty tweaks, they allow a player to pick an experience more suited to them. With simpler answers, but the timer cut in half. Or much harder targets, with a full two minutes allotted to you! I loved the simpler mode myself, again owing to that wonderful feeling of chaining many answers together at speed. Things can get repetitive of course, there’s no powerups, obstacles, or any special mechanics at all. It does mean you get a pure experience, your score entirely dictated by just your smarts and speed. But it can also get tiring after just a few consecutive runs. Thankfully though, the game also provides a mission mode! I expected Endless to be the game’s main draw, but I’ve instead found myself putting much more of my time into the missions instead. Missions (usually) provide you with a set amount of levels to reach, under a fixed time limit, with a theme to each. All addition, all subtraction, forced reshuffle after a short time, basic changes. But they become surprisingly creative later on, remixing mechanics entirely but always depending on the same core gameplay. Later levels included having to calculate a number as close to zero as possible (And losing time for anything above), working with very large numbers (But with the current total hidden, forcing everything to be done mentally) and division including decimals! I much preferred this style of play, as it resulted in a proper sense of progression, with an actual goal to work towards. They’re a fantastic addition which certainly add a lot more longevity to the game than pure high score chasing. Completely unexpected, there’s also a multiplayer mode. I didn’t get to play much of it myself, but there is an optional AI opponent that seems to do more than just wait on a delay timer before solving the puzzle immediately. So hey, it’s extra content at least. Outside of the gameplay, there are a few problems. The options menu is barren, with only sound, aspect ratio (No resolution?) and Fullscreen options. The music, while otherwise fantastic, is absolutely ear bleedingly loud on initial startup. There’s no key rebinding whatsoever, and no section even showing you the bindings in the first place. Arrows and WASD do work by default, but Enter and Z are the only interact keys, and they don’t feel the greatest to use on a compact keyboard. Fullscreen appears to be totally broken on a multi monitor setup, leaving the game displaying in an unplayable state. Even then, after I unplugged my other monitor temporarily, the UI elements don’t even scale that well to just 1080p, and show a significant quality loss. Even if you choose to stick to Windowed mode, the display instead feels a little too small. Some size presets would have gone a long way to help here. Translation errors are a common sight, sadly. Whilst this isn’t a problem in Endless, some of the Mission and Achievement descriptions can be a little confusing to interpret at times. It’s not extremely bad, but it’s certainly noticeable. It feels bad to end things on a heavy criticism after being so pleasantly surprised by the effort put in here, but I cannot justify the price either. £10 is far too steep for what will ultimately be played as a 5-10 minute distraction. The mission mode and multiplayer do add value for sure, and I expect they’ll provide the majority of playtime I’ll get out of this. But the core game still lacks depth, as many score attack games tend to do, but they usually come with prices acknowledging that fact... I’d only really recommend this game at a 50% sale or so. But it is a recommendation! Equaline will have a permanent spot on my HTPC from here on, both for some quick Endless runs if I need to burn some time, or multiplayer matches if I feel like utterly humiliating myself in front of others.
I knew I wasn’t Japanese, now I'm sure of it after seeing people completing all missions in half-an-hour =D (it took 140h for me) Sometimes we expect more from games than just fun and story, challenge is a need for some. There’s a Turkish saying, “two steps forward, one step back.” It usually describes slow progress, but any progress is something which I constantly felt playing the game; one day I’d perform worse than the day before, and the next I’d clear a stage I couldn’t even figure out earlier. Equaline is one of those games I’d call more than it seems to be, makes you better in the field that challenges you. If you have any interest in mental arithmetic, you absolutely have to play it.
I'll never forgive the Japanese!

RTA(Speed run)も盛んらしい。
