fine & good & recommend it. eager to see more. there's flavor here reminiscent of SMT & Ginormo Sword with a good helping of neobrutalist darkwave creepiness. the recent controller support got me to pick this up and the thing plays great. 4/27: Dev followed up on a technical complaint immediately. I appreciate that! 5/1: Got in touch regarding a controller-specific UI issue I was having; dev fixed it within a day and rescued my save file.
This is exactly the kind of game you'd download from a sketchy BBS back in 1996, play a ton of without really understanding it, then forget about for 20 years until you randomly rediscover it from some clickbait website's "10 Weird Obscure Games From The '90s" article. It takes the isometric RPG theme of Diablo, the combat and collection mechanics of Pokemon, the trippy visuals of Earthbound and the slow upgrading of most early MMOs, then adds its own odd spin and wraps them all up together in the grungy "cyber-industrial" aesthetic that was prominent in the mid-late '90s. You'd think this mashup of elements wouldn't work well together, but they make for a slower paced, more strategic game that constantly nudges you forward but never punishes for taking your time to get more powerful. It's not a game style that everyone will enjoy, but it can be very interesting if you prefer a game that isn't all fast action. If you have nostalgia for the particular era of PC gaming that Entity Researchers is emulating, or you want to know what it was like without fussing around with abandonware sites and trying to get decades-old games to work properly on modern machines, it's worth giving a look.
the weirdness was a selling point for me in the first place, but then there is the schizotrippy aesthetics, an amazing soundtrack, and the simple but fun rpg mechanics which can be combined and exploited in different ways, idk but there's something super relaxing in slaying entities and then collecting items, refining and levelling up. also love to see a game where the developer truly cares for their game.
SON SÖZLER
Oyunun ortamlarını, müziklerini, tasarımlarını genel olarak beğendim. Korku oyunu olmasa da içinde barındırdığı korku teması oldukça hoşuma gitti. Son olarak, oyunun fiyatının biraz uçuk olduğunu kabul ediyorum. Fakat dilerseniz şuradan oyunun demo diyebileceğimiz Prologue sürümünü ücretsiz olarak deneyimleyebilirsiniz. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2001380/Entity_Researchers_Prologue/
The actual gameplay is a clicking three circles, and hitting a bar. That's it. Not exciting. I saw less than a page of written dialog, so it's not really a big story thing.
Bit hard after the first little bit, and nothing is really explained past the first little bit, buuuut... It's like if the guys behind Cruelty Squad played a bit of Shin Megami Tensei and Final Fantasy, and decided they wanted to do that. Gameplay is exactly as you would think, with a bit of panicked control as it makes you click on things and time them for your attack to be successful, all while your decisions are judged by a clock ticking down to your turn ending, regardless of if you successfully finished your attack or not. Definitely not for anyone who doesn't enjoy min-maxing a character as this game very much prioritizes it. having a balanced character only means you're going to be somewhat behind in ALL of your areas. Extremely good combat mechanics though, Makes the RPG aspect far less tedious and actually somewhat action-packed.
Great interactive turned based combat, killer sound track, and trippy visuals. Overall its a great game and I've really enjoyed my time with it. I love how simple the equipment system is. Want to make an unstoppable tank? Throw some items that give armor+ on and take the screen ability. Want to nuke everything in your path? Take attack+ items and fill all four of your slots with offensive abilities, there are just so many options. The interactive combat made me almost jump out of my chair when I pulled of a full damage crit. I liked how every attack had a slightly different interactive pattern. The Dev is also still active and clearly cares about their game, which is always nice to see. If the preview video or screen shots on the steam page have you interested, give it a shot! [EDIT] The dev has responded to my 2 suggestions of more dungeon layouts and story improvement. The game does become more fleshed out the more you play it, though for most people the whole Entity apocalypse should keep you hooked till the next story beat. Overjoyed to see a Dev who cares so much :)
This game sucked me in and left me curious for more. The aesthetic is pretty cool and the setting is something I'd like to see more of, or expanded. If you're looking for a random RPG to try, this one is pretty neat.
