Not too much to say about En Garde, other than it's a short, simplistic, 4 chapter beat'em up with Arkham series-like combat. With a Spanish flair, you're Adalia, and you're tasked to take out the evil Duke. Not much in the way of story, but it's all for the best. The game is about 3~ hours if you get a hang of the combat. All there is to do is combat, not much in the way of exploration and secrets. There's some lore stuff you can find and read but it's not worth it or satisfying. The combat is simple, you get an attack which combos, a parry, dodge and a kick. Certain attacks need to be parried or dodged, and you can kick to knock enemies off ledges and down stairs to open them up for attack. There's not much depth, but it's good enough to keep you interested. However, the game kind of falls apart when there's too many enemies as they all hound around you and will interrupt all of your actions with attacks. Nothing, other than your dodge, has any I-frames, not even the parry so it's not that satisfying to pull off because you can just be hit right out of successful parry. The combat revolves more around kicking things into enemies, blowing them up with barrels or cannons or knocking them into weapon racks. It's an interesting idea to focus more on fighting using the environment, but by the end of the game that's all you're doing because there's too many enemies chasing you as you try and split them up and take them on one by one. It can definitely get annoying. After a short campaign you get an arena mode that I didn't even bother with, I had enough of the game by the end. The presentation is the best part, a solid aesthetic, decent sound that does the job but the best part is the voice acting. It's all very tongue and cheek due to the script (which is loaded with references to other games and film) and it doesn't take itself seriously. All very light hearted. Performance was flawless on Steam Machine. I'd suggest getting it on a sale at most.
If you like El Zorro and/or Puss in Boots this game is for you as it follow the tropes very well. Great combat mechanics. Humour and fun combat. Strategy required and thinking on your feet. Combat can become very hard very quickly. Very short but delightful. The arena mode will give you more if you want to keep playing. I got it on sale, worth it!
Can't stop laughing. Can't stop swashbuckling. Can't stop playing. Very good game. It's basically Sekiro + Crash Bandicoot.
En Garde!
Honestly some of the most fun I've ever had in a soulslike!
Very good game, a bit short story mod , lackluster content Recommended at a discounted price for a nice evening of play Work fine on Steam Deck with a bit of frame gen
