About
"Hydlide 3," released by T&E SOFT in 1987, is an action RPG.
This is the third installment in the iconic Japanese action RPG series, "Hydlide." and the player once again rises to the occasion to save Fairyland from a new crisis.
In addition to the graphics and sound inherited from the previous title as a sequel to the series, this ambitious work incorporates a moderate amount of various elements, such as the ability to choose a class, the concept of time, the need to eat during adventures, and the need to manage luggage due to the weight of items to be carried.
It can be said that this game title not only appealed to fans of the Hydlide series but also left a lasting impression on numerous gaming enthusiasts.
The main game and gallery screen (*Gallery) are in Japanese version.

UPDATE: D4E has pushed out an update that fixes a few major issues I had - the new windowed mode being the biggest one! Keyboard remapping is still extremely limited for a PC release though which is stopping me from changing this to a Recommended review. Since the other issues I have are comparatively minor, if they were to add improved remap options I'd switch this to Recommended without hesitation but for now the Not Recommended rating still stands. Also fixed an error I made in the original review. ---------- Original review: First off, I'm not giving this a negative review because of the game itself. Hydlide 3 is, in my opinion, extremely overhated in the West and I think it's a genuinely good game (and also playable in English to boot). The problem is that the emulator and frontend wrapped around it are lacking basic features you'd expect from a PC release. [list][*][strike]As far as I can tell there's no way to toggle a windowed mode (borderless window fullscreen is forced)[/strike] Fixed! [*][strike]No resolution adjustment (output resolution is forced to 1080p)[/strike] Still an issue in fullscreen but Windowed Mode has a setting to adjust it in that mode. It still seems to be scaling down a 1080p framebuffer since it adds a bit of blur that lines up with bilinear filtering even when the Filter setting is off so it's not perfect, hopefully options to adjust the native res will be added in the future! [*]No way to change the monitor the game is displayed on (always stuck on the main display) - Still an issue as of 1.0.4 [*]Extremely limited keyboard remapping - movement is stuck on the arrow keys with no WASD movement, you can only map keyboard controls to the Z, X, A, S, Q, W, 3 and 4 keys, etc - Still no remapping options as of 1.0.4 [*]And no option to switch to the original keyboard controls without hooking up an external controller (meaning you have to use the on-screen keyboard to enter text even on an actual keyboard) - Still an issue as of 1.0.4 [*]...on top of some very strange button mapping decisions such as forcibly mapping the frontend menu to the spacebar and rewind to ESC, instead of having the frontend menu on a more typical key like ESC and rewind on... any other key that would make sense? [*]Apparently there are issues with certain controllers being detected too, as noted in another review. [*]This is on top of being pricier than the Switch version of the same rerelease. [/list] I DO recommend Hydlide 3 itself (and I'll go more in-depth on that later), I just can't recommend this version in its current state. D4E has listened to feedback and patched many of their other releases before (Chrono Cross remaster, MSX2 Puyo Puyo on Switch) so I hope they fix these issues later down the line. I'm happy that they're bringing all these over, though :)
Very bare bones as a pc port, but it gets the job done. Don't listen to youtubers, the Hydlide games are great, they just played the worst versions. Rough compared to more modern games? Sure. But they still hold up/perfectly playable and are an important but overlooked part of gaming history. Hopefully this is a sign that more of D4 Enterprise's releases are head to steam.
This is a straight port of the Switch EGGCONSOLE release, UI and all. There are no new added features other than the screen button at the top. The EGGCONSOLE emulator uses the keyboard as a controller, so you can't simply type like you would on a typical PC-88 emulator. Despite that, I think this is still a good way to play the game for English players mainly because you don't to set up a PC-88 emulator or do any of the configuration that comes with that. Hope Brandish comes to Steam soon too.
