Introduction
It’s always a pleasure to play and write about abstract indie titles. The game I shall review today blends platforming sections with concepts of a biological nature, if you will. Let’s focus on the name for a bit. “Ectolibirium” is a portmanteau comprised of ecto (“outside” in Greek) and librium which doesn’t refer to anything in particular unless you wish to interpret it as some form of equilibrium. A balance which needs to be a achieved. The title itself is a clever choice of words which summarizes the game’s story to a certain extent. As the Steam debut of Void Calls, even the developer’s name reminded me of certain visual elements I had witnessed in my playtrhough of The Void. Ectolibrium stands out on its own though and it has plenty more to prove at the time of this writing.
Story
The intro video sheds some light onto our narrative, even if there are still plenty of questions left unanswered. Mysterious organisms resembling a cross between plankton and embryos have found themselves stranded in yet stranger wastelands. These “outliers” need to adapt and survive the partially submerged terrain which features obstacles and threats alike. Metal debris featuring the logo of the Zoleri Corporation hints at failed experiments and themes regarding pollution and life reclaiming lost territory. That last part is quite literal, as the outlier protagonist is tasked not only with fiding an escape, but also “repopulating” the barren landscape with bioluminescent organisms along the way. Sometimes off the beaten path, as a proper secondary objective you shall also sow certain seeds into pods that allow further exploration within areas which were previously unreachable. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1636339371
Graphics
Another project whose nearly abstract visuals were rendered by the Unity Engine, I am certain that Ectolibrium looks the part as intended by the developer. Bright neon-like colors might not go easy on the eyes at first glance, but that’s a small issue which can be solved by adjusting the brightness. The mix between discarded machinery and relentless life forms really gives this title a theme you rarely witness in gaming. Performance-wise, I have no complaints as the assets and the HUD scaled perfectly to 4K resolution and never exhibited any frame rate drops. Level layout could use more static diversity, but the point is probably to prove that it was initially a barren wasteland before our alien protagonists began regenerating it back to life in their search for an escape.
Audio
Surprisingly, there is plenty of voice acting provided by the supporting cast. Our silent hero receives advice while the soundtrack is as tranquil as expected. Couldn’t find any flaws as not even repetitiveness would set in, enough for me to mute the sounds. Ectolibrium’s audio effects convey the perfect atmosphere of cautious exploration towards a fortunate outcome. The OST can be purchased separately on Steam if you wish. It’s decently priced and it offers 25 songs.
Gameplay
Intended as an Early Access project branched through an episodic format, Ectolibrium promises an experience which shall be fulfilled at no additional cost. A wise decision which also seeks to improve the final version of the game through community feedback. So what exactly can you do for now? Thrive, not only suriving within a seemingly hostile environment. Zoleri Corp hasn’t irredeemably tainted the landscape and the outliers shall prove this by spreading their spores and thus breathing new life around them. Certain sprouts are spread throughout the levels and await “harversting” of their nutrient which can be used to even counter certain obstacles, not just create life and light. Navigating the treacherous caves, crevices and debris is entirely physics-based. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1636339529 Swimming, occasional hovering and clinging onto slippery surfaces are going to take some trial & error until players can safely complete the levels whose basic requirements represent a journey from point A to B. So you don’t have to spread the spores if you don’t want to, yet this will adversely affect the final rating of the stage which also takes into account how swifty you have traversed the location in question. I am obviously going to advise exploration instead of a hasty approach. Hostile life forms are clearly marked with shades of red, yet “dying” upon touching these obstacles, never represents “game over” at any stage. Just rinse and repeat the process with caution until you have overcome any barrier, since you can’t really fail in the tasks provided by Ectolibrium.
Verdict
If you’re looking for an unconventional platformer with equally abstract visuals, you’ve found an excellent example within this game. The genre itself is oversaturated by the same old dungeon, castle or space exploration tropes and themes which seem to feature very little variation between them. You can only jump on so many mushrooms as an Italiam plumber, until it becomes dreary and you’re left wanting for more. Ectolibrium won’t hold your hand since it doesn’t even have such an appendage to begin with. Grab its tentacles instead and take a ride across an alien world you’ll probably understand once you’ve contributed to its transformation. Redemption itself is never too late or too early, for that matter. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1636339840
Strong Points
+ Pleasant graphics and sounds. + Abstract storyline of decent length. + Affordable Early Access title for what it offers.
Weak Points
- Diversity / customization hasn’t been implemented enough. - Futher exposition wouldn’t hurt the narrative. - No Steam Trading Cards or Achievements.
Follow our curator page: IndieGems if you like and want to see more reviews like this one.
Ectolibrium is a game that has some interesting ideas, looks and plays like an arcade-style platformer with some unexpected movement mechanics, but current content is way too early early access and needs significant improvements before it is worth the current asking price of $12.99 USD. To put things into perspective, it took me about one hour to get through all of the currently available content. There is one "episode" that consists of 10 smallish levels. There are a total of 3 currently planned episodes with the final finished product available in January 2021--2 years from now. The price will hike with each episode, hopefully not by much, because even three times the current content will be hard pressed to justify the current price. Platforming uniqueness is something that many gamers of my generation look forward to. Growing up on this genre along with shmups, fighters, and brawlers, we have seen so many games trying to match the way that those older games captivated the audience with their charm. Ectolibrium has definitely its share of interesting mechanics that will take the player a few to ten minutes to get used to, with a couple of newer things introduced later on. It handles well, which is important for any platformer, it's simple controls yet complexity in movement based on situation forms a solid basis for a good puzzle-platforming game. It has vibrant and strange, yet expressive graphics as well. The introductory video really draws the player in with its oddities. The gameplay is nothing like the video though, as it's a purely 2D game with some 3D objects. I just think it needs a lot of improvement and work, and I would seriously consider lowering the price because of the huge selection of games available on Steam that players get to choose from, many of whom look for the best quality time to price ratio.
Pricing
Just too high to justify the current content.
Positives
+Interesting and fairly unique mechanics in terms of movement +Oddities in graphics and vibrant environment that changes based on player actions +Controls strangely but well (works well with controller or mouse) +Good use of checkpoints within each level along with infinite number of lives to be more inclusive and friendly to to a wider audience +Launches with native 4K support (though needs text-size scaling appropriately still) +Challenges present within each level for the player to go and collect all of the interactive/environmental items plus trying to finish within the shortest time frame
Negatives
-Too short, without too many barriers to progressing past each level in terms of just moving through. -Background environment interfering with end-of-level score card in one level, obstructing view of the actual information within. -Some background objects that look like alien goo or plastic toys, depending on how you interpret them, like Rorschach-inkblot colored-balloons and blown up. A bit detracting from the rest of the cosmetics of the game. -The story is quite bland and uninformative, and does not tie the levels together. Perhaps future episodes will furnish the player with more and constructive glue to make the story worthwhile. -Some environmental embellishments may cause problems with visibility, with outjutting 3D objects in front, causing a jarring effect. It does not interfere much with the gameplay, just that these attached objects do not give a good sense of proper parallax in order to allow the player to expect them. -Contrasting background, foreground, environmental objects, and player sprite sometimes is problematic--various locations exist where shade looks like empty space that the player should be able to get into, causing additional confusion and perhaps frustration. [strike]-The game has speedrunning in mind as it tells you how many deaths and how much time was spent going through each level, but it is single-player without leaderboards, even locally, so the timing is just a statistic that is relatively useless so far.[/strike] -Of course, as I already mentioned, the price is way too high.
Conclusion
Ectolibrium is in early access and needs a lot of work. It has a good gameplay environment and is fun for a short amount of time. The content load is rather small and it is priced too high. There are some in-game bugs/issues that will need to be addressed. If you want to help the developer with the creation of this game and you have the spare change, then by all means get yourself involved. The developer responds positively to critique as long as it is constructive in nature. The full version of the game is slated to be released in January 2021, and so you know clearly that this is currently not the finished product. I cannot recommend this game at this time, though with future updates, I will plan to revisit and to reevaluate it.
I received the product for free. Beautiful, Vibrant, Icky, Sticky, Squishy Fun... A great 2.5D Squishem-Up Platformer and a must have for every platform fan and oldskool arcade gamer! 9\10 (Really... Check this one out!)
Awesome, colorful and weird. Cool art and voices, smooth and intuitive controls. I love that it is a little abstract and strange, but with some great context/story/characters, too. Nice that you can either focus on getting through the levels, or spend extra time finding seeds and fully exploring the landscape.
Rich, vibrant, immensly satisfying. Looking forward to the next episode! 9/10, would drown souls again. (Note to dev: Please provide more opportunities to drown souls in future episodes.)
Looking forward to seeing more! Still looking for all the seeds! Controls are very fluid and it feels nice when you start getting your creature up to speed. Cant wait to see some more.
Ectolibrium is a weird game for weird people. Falling somewhere between flOw and Oddworld, it presents you with a living and bizarre world to explore with an equally bizarre alien character. The platforming is solid, thanks to tight controls, unique movement and organic symbiotic powerups that open up new degrees of freedom for your character. As you fling, float, and crawl through through the level you spread ectoplasm, like a bee spreads pollen, which changes the barren levels into thriving alien ecosystems. Don't expect that all your questions will be answered from just the first episode, you won't even know by the end whether you made the right choice or not. Instead, anticipate scratching just the surface of Ectolibrium's rich lore.

An Alien Vector Based Puzzle Platformer. Ectolibrium is a incredibly unique game. You are the outlier, an alien being, in world that is alien to us and it. You explore this world to discover what it is and how you fit into it. Your character moves by launching off surfaces and clinging to another. Using your limited move set you have to make your way through maze like levels using your overcoming obstacles with your skill and wits. Pros: Unique alien setting. Challenging and entertaining gameplay. The beginning of a mysterious story. (As of writing only episode one is out.) Cons: Might be too alien for some. Takes a few levels to get the hang of. In development, so only the first act is out.
