While Ebony Spire: Heresy isn't what you'd call a deep game, it's an excellent casual title for people who enjoy retro dungeon crawlers but don't necessarily have the time to commit to an epic like Ultima Underworld or Eye of the Beholder. It's a simple matter of clearing your way through 10 random levels as one of three character classes, and powering yourself up by picking up increasingly potent weapons and spells as you go. The enemies can and will use the same objects around the level as you can, which can lead to some lethal encounters as a slime monster arms itself with the daggers dropped by the lizardman you just killed and stabs you in the back with them. All in all, it's a fun time-killer for busy adventures, and although it lacks polish, it has enough charm to get away with its rough edges. It'd be handy if the in-game help mentioned that you can press T to throw things, because that's great fun. Oh, and the Linux support is greatly appreciated. (Full disclosure: I was gifted this game by a Twitter acquaintance who ran a lottery for a copy in order to support the dev. But I'd been eyeing it up anyway.)
For what it is, I'd say it's a decent amount of fun. It's also nice that it will run on about anything.
10/10 turn based keyboard-only dungeon crawler the controls aren't anywhere obvious but you might like to know them to have fun * W/A/S/D + Q|E for movement and camera control * P to pick up items on the floor * I to access inventory * O to open/close doors * L to access the log + PageUp/PageDown to scroll through it * While the inventory is open select an item and press T to throw it * Press space / enter to trigger the item in the inventory (or equip it) * Press P to drop the selected item * Press V to view/examine your surroundings also * up/down arrow : forward/back * left/right : turn left/right * m : open the map * > / . (period) : use stairs * 0 (zero / numpad 0) : enter portal references https://steamcommunity.com/app/725040/discussions/0/3182216552780138830/ http://www.fountainarcade.com/2017/11/ebony-spire-heresy-steam-ramblin-review.html
Best of luck to you! - A fellow gamedev.
Old school fun!
Love the game. It speaks to me. I like the layout of the HUD. Part of the satisfaction is figuring out the keys and commands. Developing little strategies for different enemies. Am I supposed to kill villagers? Kind of hard not too.
It is a nice and simple rogue like title. After playing on the same character for a while, you can see that the developer(s) have put a lot of work into this game, as simple as it may be. You always see new enemies, find new items or stronger versions of them or have a surprise at some of them (Artifacts). The design is nice, although there are a few bugs. All of them were only visual nature, however. What I would like for the future might be an update considering the music / sound of the game. It is pretty boring and doesn't hold your attention which is something that a game should with its music. Also maybe some sort of tutorial at the beginning. The "Help" button might help but it took me a while to find out that I can't change the sound settings with my arrow keys, but only with the WASD keys. As a rating I would give 5/10. It's not a bad title and can keep you playing but I don't see it as "above average" to be honest.
