Dungeons of Dreadrock 2 - The Dead King's Secret is a mixed bag. I will try to give my honest opinion on this sequel. The story and presentation are much better than in the first game. This game has a hub world and that is a nice change, it doesn't change much but there are some puzzles to solve in the hub area. It is a longer game but I am not sure if that is a good thing. The hub world has 4 chapters, 100 levels + some hub world puzzles and a short intro section. The main problem with this game is that the first 50 levels feel the same as the first game. At one point I had to check if I was playing the first game. That is never a good sign, boring first 50 levels with weak puzzles and most of them are all about timing and trial and error. Based on that I wouldn't recommend this one but..... The second part of the game was really well made. Puzzles get tricky and creative, less focused on timing and overall a solid second part of the game. Night and day (1st half and 2nd half) if you ask me. It is an indie puzzle game so the criteria can't be the same as when reviewing a AA or AAA title. There is much more to like than to dislike. Would I like to see Dungeons of Dreadrock 3 ? Not really, only because I think you can't squeeze more out of this formula. I can recommend this but not at full price. Wait for a sale and check it out because it is a solid game.
Previously I've played the first part on mobile, so now I was pleasantly surprised to find a sequel on Steam. This game is a fine continuation of the series. Puzzles are fun to solve, visual style is cute, story is touching and the main music theme is beautiful. I'll be waiting for a third part. My only complaint would be an awful translation, probably AI-made. I realize that for an indie developer paying actual humans for translating the game to various languages might be too expensive. But the first part did have a good translation, so the absence of such in a sequel is a bit disappointing.
Basically, DoD and DoD2 events happened at the same time. You get to control a girl you met in chapter 5 of DoD. She is actually the daughter of Flame who came into that dungeon to complete her mission
(to collect King's ring)
. You can complete this game in about 5-6 hours. Some puzzles are hard to understand in this game. I had to check YouTube gameplay to get past some chapters, which took around 30-40 minutes. Compared to the first game, this one has some upgrades. Improved animations, themes and additional visual illustrations are noticeable. You can speed up cutscenes. There are new types of enemies and new lore. You often sit beside bonfires to meditate and gather answers. The game also features some deep, sad parts
(a good guy sacrificed his life for you)
. Overall, this game pleased me. It contains two endings: one canon
(connected to DoD's ending)
and other non-canon
(actually, it was the protagonist's main mission)
. What I didn’t like is that there are some creatures in this game that don’t hurt you, but you have to or can kill them. Even though you can kill bosses
(this game includes a few boss fights while the first game didn't include any)
, you cannot kill some NPCs
(satan-like creatures and living creatures that come from water)
. Equipment design is a bit fuzzy because items suddenly become unusable or unavailable. Well, it amazed me how I met CharizardX in this game, just as I met Charizard in the first game. Consider this as my feedback. After all, it’s a good game. Waiting for DoD3, backstory of some characters and what is going to happen next!
This game is completely underrated. When you play it you realize the craft and the deep thought they have put into designing it. I wish most of the games I play were so well thought as this one. It´s also quite immersive, and extremely cheap. 10/10
Loved the first game and this is just as good. Great story with all the puzzles. Very fun. Both games are equally enjoyable. I would highly recommend for anyone who likes retro like puzzle games.
This is a seriously flawed game with tons of scripting errors that can get you softlocked, and stupid game design that requires you to constantly check the hint button on the screen to figure out what is going on. While it's technically possible to beat the game without hints, there are many ridiculously confusing things you need to do (For example, throw a rock onto a patch of land so an ally can use it, with little explanation given). The hints sort of destroy the challenge but if you don't use them you'll probably waste a ton of time only to get frustrated once you see what you need to do. With that said, I really like the feel of this game and it is at its heart a puzzle game. It's just that if you compare it to a game like Zelda where the rules are very intelligently laid out this is more of a "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" kind of game. It would've been better if they just made an easier game and removed the hints because they just distract from the game play. This is a decent length game that takes about six hours to finish but much of the time you spend completing it will probably be mulling around backtracking enemies so you can position them correctly which is not fun puzzle design. This review is more neutral but if you can get past the bugs and the broken design it's not the worst thing ever and is, at times, fun to play.
