Developed and published by ROOT GAMES, Dungeon Tracer takes the familiar concept of tile-linking puzzles and merges it with the progression and unpredictability of a roguelike dungeon crawler. Instead of relying on quick reactions, the game challenges players to think several moves ahead by tracing chains of matching icons to attack enemies, defend against incoming damage, recover health, and collect valuable resources. This unique combination creates a gameplay loop that feels both relaxing and mentally engaging, rewarding tactical planning over brute force. The randomly generated dungeons ensure that every expedition unfolds differently, encouraging players to adapt rather than depend on a single winning strategy. The heart of the experience lies in its strategic decision-making. Every traced path carries weight, forcing players to choose between maximizing damage, strengthening defenses, or preparing for tougher encounters ahead. The game's combat system is easy to understand but surprisingly deep, as each successful run depends on making efficient use of limited resources and selecting the right moment to unleash powerful abilities. This constant balance between risk and reward gives every dungeon crawl a satisfying rhythm, making victories feel genuinely earned rather than dictated by luck alone. Even after multiple sessions, the randomized layouts and evolving situations prevent the gameplay from becoming repetitive. Character customization greatly enhances the replay value. Dungeon Tracer features nine playable classes and nine different races, allowing players to experiment with numerous combinations that significantly alter combat styles and progression paths. Whether focusing on survivability, offensive power, or ability-driven tactics, every build offers a distinct approach to overcoming the game's increasingly dangerous challenges. Supporting this flexibility is a massive collection of more than 400 items, dozens of unique skills, and multiple upgrade options that continuously reshape each run. Finding new equipment and discovering effective synergies becomes one of the game's strongest motivators, as no two adventures are likely to develop in exactly the same way. The variety extends beyond character building. Players encounter numerous special enemy types that demand different strategies instead of repetitive solutions, while four selectable difficulty levels provide an approachable entry point for newcomers and a satisfying challenge for experienced roguelike fans. Additional features such as online leaderboards encourage players to optimize their builds and compete for better performances, while the save-and-resume function makes it easy to enjoy the game in either short sessions or extended dungeon-crawling marathons. These systems work together to create a title with impressive longevity despite its straightforward premise. Visually, Dungeon Tracer favors clarity over spectacle. The interface is clean and functional, ensuring that important information remains easy to read even during intense encounters. The dark fantasy presentation complements the dungeon-crawling theme without distracting from the puzzle mechanics that drive the gameplay. The developer also openly notes that some background artwork and interface elements were created with AI assistance, while emphasizing that the gameplay systems, balance, and overall design remain the result of traditional development. This transparency helps establish realistic expectations while keeping the focus on the mechanics that define the experience. Dungeon Tracer is not designed for players seeking a heavily story-driven adventure or cinematic presentation. Its primary focus is on replayability, experimentation, and strategic problem-solving, with progression taking center stage over narrative depth. The learning curve may also feel demanding during the first few runs, particularly for players unfamiliar with roguelikes or puzzle-based combat systems. However, those willing to invest time into understanding its mechanics will find a rewarding experience built around meaningful choices and constant experimentation. Overall, Dungeon Tracer succeeds in combining two genres that naturally reinforce each other. Its puzzle mechanics remain engaging thanks to thoughtful RPG progression, extensive customization, randomized dungeon generation, and a satisfying sense of discovery throughout each run. ROOT GAMES has created an indie title that stands out by offering more strategic depth than its simple concept initially suggests. While its presentation remains modest and its story is secondary to gameplay, the combination of tactical combat, rewarding progression, and strong replay value makes Dungeon Tracer an enjoyable experience for fans of both puzzle games and roguelike adventures.
This game filled a void that's been in my soul for around a decade. It's everything I ever dreamed of. One of the best roguelikes ever made, as far as I'm concerned.
Enjoyable match 3 with roguelike elements, gets pretty hard on the harder difficulties, there are various classes and loadouts that extend the replayability. The developer is very flexible, they implemented plenty of community suggestions already! (the clickable status windows on the side were community suggestions)
Played the original Dungeon Raid back on iOS years ago. Damn near wore a grid into my touchscreen playing. Still has the same hilarious combos you can unlock. :D
