About
In Dungeon CompAInions, the player can choose one of three playable classes: Mage, Druid, and Ranger. Each character comes equipped with a main attack weapon and two powerful abilities, which must be used strategically and wisely. The two remaining classes not chosen by the player will be controlled by agents trained through Reinforcement Learning and will accompany the player throughout their journey.
Together, the player and their AI companions must clear rounds composed of multiple enemy waves. Each round consists of five waves, which are triggered continuously during gameplay—unless the player decides to activate the pause button midway through the round. Pausing the game will damage, potentially even kill, the player. This allows for clearing the remaining enemies and helps with not being overrun by hordes of undead. The player will get score for every initiated wave, stacking up with the number of waves cleared without pausing. Thus, the player should choose wisely between staying safe and pausing the game, or being greedy and trying to clear all enemies without a moment of peace.
After completing a round, the player will be presented with three reward options, from which one may be selected. These rewards include upgrades to Attack Damage or Ability Damage, increases in Max Health, reductions in cooldown times, or boosts to movement speed. These upgrades are essential for survival and success.
With every subsequent round, the game becomes progressively more challenging. Enemy strength increases, spawn rates accelerate, and wave intervals become shorter—down to a predefined minimum. This creates a dynamic balance between becoming stronger and facing ever-larger groups of enemies, ensuring the player is constantly tested in both strategy and combat efficiency.

This game does not use AI as you would expect based off the name. It legit just has enemy and ally ai, like they walk around and shoot, this does not use an llm. "While AI-cotrolled allies help you survive waves of enemies." Yeah man I'd hope they have ai.

Steam is drowning in thousands of lazy, low-effort top-down console reject shooters, and "Dungeon CompAInions" is yet another one. I'm not kidding, there's over 6,000 of these on Steam, and almost all of them are garbage, amateur kitbashes. This is not one of the good ones. I think this was a student project... and while that immediately disqualifies this as garbage, it would at least provide an explanation as to why something so badly made would be on Steam at all. The "gimmick" backing this console rejected, contentless shooter is that you have bots that follow you, and they're crap. It's unclear if they are intentionally crap or if it's just because the "developers" of this garbage don't know how to make video games. I'm going to go ahead and project that the total rejection of this as a game from hundreds of millions of Steam gamers is indicative of the latter. The top-down shooter genre is pretty much obsolete, even console peasants don't bother with them anymore. Just a tiny number of top-down shooters went anywhere on PC despite the little value they offer (Enter the Gungeon, etc). This is nowhere near being as good as those. Even without a price tag, it is easy to see why gamers ignored this in favor of modern, professionally developed 3D games. This is offering nothing new or interesting. The "game" here is of a pretty low technical standard. The implementation is basic minimum effort stuff, more like a weekend project rather than a serious, professionally made product... and it's bad even compared to most amateur made games. An experimental piece... and the experiment is "Can I spend on Steam Direct and then call myself a game dev?" While that $100 spend on Steam Direct probably made the developers feel good about themselves, we have to ask why this kind of thing is good for gamers. It isn't. In terms of visuals, this features fairly low quality low poly 3D graphics which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and while some developers struggle with creating high quality visuals, failing to do so is a disservice to gamers. It's very difficult to recommend bad looking games. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. A peak of 2 concurrent players (according to SteamDB) for a "free" game is a disastrous public reception. Out of 130 million potential players here on Steam, almost nobody was interested. Even though this is "free". That level of rejection speaks a lot for the quality of the game. Given that this free game won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? This is a "nope". While it won't necessarily cost you money, the time and hard drive space it requires could be better invested in one of the many higher quality alternatives on Steam.
what the frick
I don't get it. It just seems like a tech demo for a very basic ARPG. There's no focus on the AI on or companions. They just shoot at walls and die instantly. They don't even use their abilities as far as i can tell. The abilities arn't tested at all. Your basic attack does way more damage and attacks faster than any of your offensive abilities and the utility abilities barely do anything at all so there's no real reason to do anything other than spam lmb and kite enemies. This could be an alright concept if the devs focus on young children or people new to PC/console gaming as a target audience. It is easy to play and teaches alot of the basics intuitively. But in it's current state it just feels like a university project they were forced to publish by their professor.
