Dummy Life * 7/10
Life is hard, especially for dummies. Inspired by Republique's game mechanics, Dummy Life's is an interesting 3rd Person puzzle game developed with a not perfect, yet good and inspired use of Unreal Engine 4.
INTRO. What is Dummy Life about?
As CYPH3R, a Hacking specialist Robot, your purpose is to hack your way out of testing rooms to prove your AI, then be dismantled unless further tests will be required. Besides the riddles, I honestly find the presence of other dummies interesting as they're kind of hidden, or present for a reason, or just as "guest". It gives that little bit of life to the chambers that would look too lifeless. Another good contribution is given by some random messages present in some computers with small notes, hints and whatsoever.
GRAPHIC. Engine And Artistic aspects.
Thank God this is an indie project that runs on Unreal Engine 4, and that's why it just runs fine on my laptop. Of course, I had a couple of minor problems setting fullscreen, details level are on low-medium but still the game runs quite smoothly and looks pretty good at first glance. The very first good thing you will notice isn't the room design or effects, but the skybox with stars and close orbiting planets that are not shaped with an incredible detail level, but the colors and composition is really mesmerizing. After that you notice the test chambers as dark, mainly grey themed (except when lasers come in play) but with a good level of care for details as platforms, doors and so on are made of good models. Of course this is an indie project so there are some elements here and there that bring a bit down the graphic level such as platforms and elements that move from point A to B by passing through structures without any trouble, lasers effects are really simple (and I don't think it's due to my graphic settings as I see the same from store's pictures) but I think that's really the worst I could find.
SOUNDTRACK. Themes and Accompaniments.
Surprisingly the game present some nice electronic tunes that just accompany the player in the test chamber or emphasize certain more challenging and dynamic situations. There are no memorable songs, but they do their job fine.
GAMEPLAY. How does it work?
Gameplay reminds me a lot of Republique, where you can see only from surveillance cameras and you switch from camera to camera to guide the player and hack devices. Dummy Life takes that part of the game and implants it in a 3rd person puzzle game: your purpose is to get to the exit and you achieve that by looking for cameras, buttons or robot prototypes to interact with. You just aim them and use them. The further you go the more complicated and challenging rooms get, so it obviously ends with a mix of everything, for example you must find a camera to hack so you go to its POV, you can aim another camera and get to it, this one sees a robot prototype you can control and send to push a button that opens a door or switches lasers from death to harmless mode. That's essentially how the game works, and it obviously gets more complicated the more you go ahead with chambers.
LAST NOTES. What doesn't work?
Control. In most review others point out the fact that you need to hold down a button to "mouse Look", otherwise you can move a cursor to select the device to hack/interact with. That just doesn't make any sense because it could have been made simply with a normal mouse look and you can hack objects you directly aim. Or close to crosshair. As it is now objects are not "hackable" if your big head is between camera and the object... Another thing that makes the manual mouse look even more annoying. Even just inverting things would make things simpler.
TL;DR. Pros And Cons

+++PROs+++

GOOD POTENTIAL. I already appreciated Republique's game mechanics so I enjoyed Dummy Life's gameplay as well, applied to an interesting puzzle game developed with a not perfect, yet good and inspired use of Unreal Engine 4.

---CONs---

MOUSE LOOK. I don't understand why making such un uncomfortable system that requres you to hold a button to mouselook. It's not a tragedy of course but it's a bit annoying. Dummy Life: ~~~~~~~~~ Command initiated. . . Robot CYPH3R activated. . . Welcome back online, CYPH3R; we have chosen you to test our latest hacking technology. Your goal is to reach the exit on the next 18 levels. This is probably going to be the most important test of your Dummy Life. Dummy Life is a puzzle game set in a beautiful science fiction environment where you control the robot named CHYPH3R and help him through 16 test sites. The first sites are basically a simple and effective tutorial. From here, the puzzles will be slightly more complicated. There are two types of perspectives in term of views. Each time you control any robots, including CYPH3R, you’ll see the world in the third person view. When you hack a camera, the view will swap to the first person. In each of the test sites, your robot will rapidly find itself stuck. Look around for cameras, hack them by clicking on the left button of your mouse and you’ll be able to see the site from that point. In any case, a round circle will appear on each of the objects you are able to hack. The interesting aspect here is that you can jump from one camera to another in order to help you find a button that will either open a security door, activate a platform or even locate and activate a prototype robot which you couldn’t see with CYPH3R. Within each site there are data cubes that are hidden in the scenery, and when you find them, all you have to do is left click on them and you will earn a new skin for your dummy as a reward. Half way through the game, you’ll come across laser beams. You’ll be able to pass through the orange ones with your robot, but not the purple laser beams; only the prototype robot can go through those. He can’t go through the orange laser beams, however. This will increase the difficulty of the puzzle, which is great. In any case, you’ll finish your first walkthrough in around 3 to 3.5 hours. Graphically, the game looks great and runs well. The controls are pretty simple and are very easy to use. In regards to the puzzles, they are good but not too challenging. Positives: ~~~~~~~ - Great graphics - The game runs well - Easy to play - Nice controls Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - Needs to be more challenging - No achievement or trading cards as yet This is a fun and easy game to play, set in beautiful space scenery! I wish I had a test dummy at my disposal! 6/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! A really neat puzzle game, way more polished than most games that appear on the steam store and a very low, low price. It really is as good as the trailer makes it look. No complaints at all here other than some achievements might be a nice addition, or maybe some kind of time trial mode. 100% recommended!
I don't like the controls, hold right click and drag to look around, it feels like the controls are inverted doing it that way, it's really annoying and offputting. Nothing is really explained on what to do, i had to look up a tutorial on the 1st and 3rd levels. If the controls were just move the mouse to look around like a normal game it would be more playable
This game is aesthetically pleasing with emotionally charged music to pair with. It brings that first time of playing a new IP that is certainly exciting by virtually imprinting a strong sense of a space base environment as the main theme of the game. Gameplay is much more forgiving compare to grand titles like portal 2, its less fustrating as it challenge first timers with interesting puzzle but not to a point you really stuck or have to search for youtube playtrough for it. The game has a solid average 2hr+ play trough time for those who speed run and up to 5hrs+ for regular and casual players. The game mechanic utilize refreshing "body transfer" ability much similar to the game soma in theory except that you can instantly experience different perspective at an instant, with that it would be up most interesting to see if the game would use this feature to its advantage for any possible dlc or a sequal with this as its intention. Story isn't a strong point of this game, its kept simple which is most likely the developer's intention but basic enough to follow trough breadcrumbs of each section to unfold the story as it goes along. Controler is left much to be desired. At first its disorienting to not have total camera freedom by just binding the free view on to a mouse, having to constantly hold right mouse is a bit of a tiring option especially when the game encourage viewing around for potential interactive object. The need for an option to change control bindings is desperately needed. On a side note the game is thoughtful of allowing players to review the key function option just at the bottom left corner. On a possitive side note the key is real time responsive and the transition and move around is very smooth. Option to be able to switch between windows screen and the game is instantaneous and best of all it doesn't lag which is always a welcome option as I multi task a lot of stuff and most of the time I would get load lag even when modern games offer "window screen" Overall I give this game a solid 7/10 among most of the other game that is most likely coming from indie studio base on graphics, audio, control, presentation, story and potential. Its one of those hidden gems that isn't discovered due to tons of games bombarding the steam store everyday and just so happens that this game pop up a brief moment on my store page. Worth supporting for the product it delivers with that price tag.
Very creative 2-3 hour puzzle game. If you're at all interested in puzzle games it's an experience well worth the price.
