Herkese gitmez graphic novel sevenine güzel vakit geçirtir
10 ___ Dull Grey doesn't exist in a vacuum. It’s set in the "Progress Program" universe, which the developer previously explored in the short story collection The Stream is Dead (haven't read it, so I can't comment) and the short visual novel Railways of Love (which was actually pretty decent). The setting itself is intriguing, but it doesn't bring anything groundbreaking to the table in Dull Grey. The slice of the world we are shown relies on a familiar sci-fi trope: an omnipotent system analyzes people, assigns them suitable professions, and asks them to choose between the available options. However, the appeal of this world lies not in its originality, but in its presentation. The author actively avoids direct exposition: the world-building, the rules of the Program, its limitations, and the true nature of the professions are revealed entirely through dialogue, often — through subtle hints. It's a great example of smart, immersive storytelling that encourages you to piece the bigger picture together from snippets of conversation. The plot, meanwhile, is built on a relatable and fundamentally sound idea:
a choice made for you won't bring happiness, even if you have a natural knack for it. Conversely — making your own decision might turn out to be a mistake, but it spares you the crushing weight of missed opportunities, that titular dull grey feeling of knowing you could have tried, but didn't.
Unfortunately, once you grasp this core message, it takes five minutes tops to figure out the game's logic and how to brute-force the right dialogue options. The game explicitly boasts eleven possible endings, but in reality, seven of them are just cosmetic variations of one another. They merely offer different illustrations of the exact same outcome, where the protagonist
picks an absurd profession purely for the sake of rebellion. As a result, the story offers almost no actual branching paths: you can either rebel or choose between two system-approved options (each of which can be chosen independently or by letting others decide for you).
Because of this, Dull Grey functions more as a linear authorial statement rather than a genuinely branching piece of interactive fiction. As for the format — it matches the content perfectly on a conceptual level. The text is written in a detached tone, as if the author is deliberately observing the characters from afar. The visual style relies heavily on contrast: stark black-and-white cards during the text segments alternate with a monumental grey landscape dotted with rare black islands of civilization. However, the execution of these ideas clearly lacked either the budget or the time for proper polish. The text occasionally suffers from punctuation errors, pointing to a lack of proofreading. The landscape also looks a bit too simplistic — the black buildings seem roughly pasted onto the background, and the visual dynamic is limited to a monotonous camera pan across the environment. On a technical level, the game runs perfectly well — the system requirements are minimal, and I didn’t encounter a single bug. The creator of Dull Grey clearly understands the principles of storytelling and has a firm grasp on the message they want to convey and how the game should feel. Unfortunately, the project ultimately falls short in scale, interactivity, and basic polish. It's hard to recommend picking it up at full price, but on sale — it’s a perfectly viable way to spend half an hour or an hour reading. 7/10
