Man, I've never seen a more riveting game that DubWars. This was so fun to play, and the music and art style were perfect. It never felt too easy, and it never got to a point where it was so hard you wanted to quit. This game was the bomb! Notice those key words; Was. Were. Past-Tense Verbs. For those of you that don't know, they had an update, and it SUCKS. The game is way too easy now, the difficulty/endless modes are gone, the game is incredibly buggy, and the art style is totaly different. And, most important, the lasers and weapons are different. That was the main reason I got this game; because it looked so cool. Now, I regret buying it. It isn't worth the price (which was a problem from the begining. $20 for a game in BETA? Really?). If they could do one thing to make this game better, it's this: CHANGE IT BACK. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I love the game BUT i was disappointed to find that after about 6 months all they i added was 1 new level and a difficulty setting and the price was a bit high $20? is a lot for the game but i got it because it was on sale for $5 i do have high hopes the game will be updated and will in time be worth the $20 tag So in total would recommend but not at full price ............................................................................................................................................ Update #1 : So with this new update I'm going to say everything I saw and I will do this for every update. Menus: The menu load time has (at least for me) Increased by a lot , I'm not a fan of the new song selection and the way it looks I perfered it the way it used to be, I wish there was a way for people to toggle the way the levels look in case people liked the way it used to be better, theres also a glitch where if you click on a song then press back the arrow keys to select a song are gone Urban metaphor: I'm a fan of the new look, this level was alway very easy but now it's borderline laughable, your main threat is these new turret like thing that set up shoot you with these purple lasers that are very hard to spot, besides this the song is a cake walk. Synergy: I love this new look for the song I like how that light becomes a laser at points I like how the area at the bottom slows you down a bit because theres stuff down there, but this does lead to the bottom left/ center becoming no man's land because thats mainly where they spawn at but besides that like level has improved. Break it up: This level I have a lot to say about it but first I will start with the good. This level has a amazing feature where theres 2 ships at the start and whichever ship you shoot at first your ship turns the color of the ship you didn't attack and the ship you did attack starts to aim after only you. But this system is broken because whenever you die your stuck on which ever side you choose your glitched on that side and you have to restart in order to be able to choose the other side, theres also another broken feature which would have allowed you to destory parts of the ships (doesn't matter which side your on you can destory both ships whenever you please), but this feature is broken because whenever you "destory" a part of a ship you see a little sqiggly line over the that part you "destoryed" the line looks like it was drawn in MS paint, there's also a glitch where your weapons remain firing for 8 seconds after you restart from dying. Eclipse: So I didn't find any bugs with this level but there things I want to comment on.The creepers are finally killable. The new spawning system for this level is floating dungon at spawn in creepers and spiders, but I do wish there was a way to destory these dungon because they do tend to spam my screen. There also these astroids at are floating that can be broken into smaller pieces and smaller pieces and then destory cool system but theres no effect when breaking apart/destorying these astroids and I do hope that gets added in soon. Tough Guy: This level should be re-named "Non stop lasers" because this level is full of the same laser spam before at least it was a lighting like effect but now it's just lasers. Also the laser in the center on the level just pops into view the first time it appear and doesn't fade it like it does all the other times OVERALL: This update had lots of content but it seems rushed, unpolished, and untested and it seems as if they tried to do too much in such little time. But this does show this game has a lot of potential in the furture lets just hope the devs don't add in too much with out first making sure everything works first
DubWars is a casual/music/rhytm-based twinstick shooter with a cool soundtrack and tedious gameplay. Pros: + Soundtrack is awesome if you are into electronic music. + Cool for few minutes to shoot projectiles in harmony with the soundtrack. Cons: - Gameplay variety is limited and tedious all around - Backgrounds are awful, confusing players about projectiles and hinders reflexes - Not enough content - Controls are not fluid - Balancing is bad overall. Visibility area is poorly conducted. Movement speed is dumb. Enemy placing is awful. - No sound effects 2/10 Kudos to artists who delivered that cool soundtrack. Gameplaywise, it is bad and limited.
I received this game for free, and I'm glad I did, because I would have regretted spending money on it. When I first heard about it, I thought "Great! It's another Beat Hazard Ultra!". That was my first mistake. I really like BHU. I like other twin-stick shooters like Geometry Wars and Waves. This game is not like those games. It's true I haven't played a lot of this game, but I've played enough to see how some things work, and there's virtually nothing to motivate me to continue playing. Here are some reasons I don't like this game. 1. No instructions. Not really a big deal, you can figure it out, but it's nice when you're not forced to guess what key to press to enter a level, among other things. 2. No sound effects. This game certainly has music, but, your weapons make no sound, your enemies make no sound, nothing makes sound. There is only music when you're playing. I guess in some ways, that could be nice. Maybe you like the ambience, I don't know. I don't like that. I'm trying to play a game, and having some audio feedback would be nice. 3. Lack of contrast. By this, I mean that enemies don't stand out from the background. Or, at least, if they do, the background is cluttered with plenty of things that 'stand out' just as well as enemies. I suppose you could get used to it after awhile, but until you do, it's easy for your eyes to focus on some moving object in the background and completely miss the missile or laser or whatever that's about to hit your ship. 4. Lack of control. You can do two things in this game: move, and choose which direction to face. You have NO control over what weapon to use or when. I tend to prefer games that give me options and flexibility over how I play. Speaking of weapons, your ship constantly switches between projectiles. You could play a song several times, learn every beat and how your ship responds to every note in that particular song, and try to build your strategy around that. But I don't want to. I don't like flying around, wanting to shoot an enemy but being unable to and so I just fly around and aim at what I want to kill next, only to have somethign happen in the song that shoots two lazers at a 30 degree angle from your front, so you miss the ship you were aiming for, and then because it's a song and things change all the time, your lazers VERY quickly change to somethign else with some other attack pattern. So you can try to anticipate it, or react to it, and you can fail repeatedly. This is in opposition to the other games I like, where your weapons are pretty standard, and you choose when to use them, and if they change, it's probably very obvious what it's changing to and when it's changing so you can actually do something with it. 5. There are enemies that spawn in the middle of the map, abruptly, with no warning. It's not linked to the song that I can tell. It just happens. Combined with my 3rd point, this makes it disorienting. I'll kill an enemy, think an area is clear, refocus my attention, and suddenly I'm being surrounded and hit by enemies that are on a half of the screen that was literally clear a second ago. 6. Bad scaling. The game description advertises a fluctuation between fast-paced mayhem and calm tension depending on what the music is doing at the time. Beat Hazard Ultra does this same thing, and I think they do it quite well. When the song is fast and loud, enemies zip around the screen, but your weapons are at full power, and so it can turn into an intense, all-out battle. But then when the song slows down, BHU shuts down your weapons. They're still there, but they're very weak. To compensate, the enemies also slow down and also lose their weapons. It gets calm, and you can take a moment to breathe, but you've still gotta be careful with your flying to avoid getting backed into a corner. In Dub Wars, however, enemies move the same speed (as far as I can tell) regardless of what the song is doing. At fast/loud parts, as in every other part, your weapons are constantly switching it up so you never have a consistent way to take out enemies, and at slow/quiet parts, you just have no weapons at all. Which means it's basiclly the same game, except instead of any potential to kill things, you can only dodge. 7. Bad scaling. Generally, if a game allows you to collect stuff that you can then spend on upgrades, the game will also let you keep those upgrades. This makes sense, for reasons I won't explain. Dub Wars, however, has you collect "wub" in a song, and then when you die you can spend it on better health, or shields, or lasers, or side lasers, or whatever. Except that any upgrades you get don't carry over to the next level. So for every song, you basically start fresh and have to grind up for any upgrades you may want. Speaking of upgrades, they present you with several sliders for each thing you can upgrade. Except that the sliders don't work. I thought I'd be able to grab it and drag it up or down to choose how many points I want to allocate to a particular thing. But nope. You have to click a little plus or minus sign at the top or bottom of each slider. Once you allocate points, you can turn the upgrade off again, or just make it less, which is nifty, but it's still an unintuitive way of doing it. This is on top of the game giving you no indication of exactly how the upgrades work. So, ok, upgrading 'health' gives you more hp and upgrading one of your lazers does more damage, right? Sure, ok, fine. That's easy. But how much does it change? I have absolutely no idea. I don't know how much of a difference it makes. Also, for the 5 or so different kinds of weapons upgrades you can choose from, it wasn't readily obvious to me which is which. They have a name that you don't see anywhere else, and there's a preview image (just an image, most of which is just your ship), but it doesn't exactly look the same way it does in the song. There certainly seemed to be more types of projectiles in the game than what I could upgrade, and since they're so dependent on what is happening in the song and may only actually be in use for half a second at a time, upgrading any one of the weapons seemed pretty silly. To add to the confusion for new players, each type of projectile seems to get reskinned for each song, just to keep you on your toes. There was probably more, but, I don't know what anymore. I guess it would have been nice to have the option of playing my own music if I wanted to. I will say that it's not ENTIRELY bad. I didn't get very far, so I don't know what all it has to offer, but some of the music is decent. Obviously this depends entirely on your personal tastes, but it's pretty clearly dubstep, and you probably wouldn't be checking it out if you didn't enjoy that genre. Also, the game is sort of pretty. Sort of. I personally don't really like the enemy design and such, but, I like flashing neon and stuff. Light shows are pretty cool. This game doesn't provide the best visuals, but it was one of my favorite parts of the game. In short, I just feel like this game could use a lot of polishing in a lot of areas. I have no idea what the actual development process was, but it gives me the impression that there were some ideas that were thrown together somewhat quickly, and not much attention was paid to how the parts actually work to provide a user experience. If some areas were adjusted, this game might be quite good. Reading some of the other reviews, it sounds like it's gone through a handful of updates already which changed the user experience rather drastically, so there is some hope. But as it stands, I am unimpressed.
Dubstep as far away from this one as you can. It’s dull, tedious and short. The length is artificially padded with having to replay levels, which is a chore and makes a boring game even more so. The visuals are bland, despite being flashy and in one instance the background gave me an instant migraine, not hyperbole, an actual migraine. The music is ok, not the best dub out there but it'll do. The problem is when you have to replay levels, and you will, the songs soon grate on you. If you like score attack games, have low standards and enjoy dubstep then sure, but if you are in anyway not obsessed with that then just don’t play this.
Me: Oh look a stray game! What's the matter? game: *wimmper* Me: so you say that your owner made you a cool arena shooter where your weapons are powered by wubs? game: *Bark* Me: Wait, so they promised a extreme mode and some upcoming DLC only to dump you away for no reason?!?! game: *wimper* Me: Guys who made this game, you dun ****ed it up!!
(Got this game for free courtesy of the developer's submission to SteadyGiveaways. Thanks!)
It's Dubstep that created these wars...literally!
DubWars is a top-down arena shooter that is inspired completely by Dubstep, a genre of electronic dance music. But Dubstep isn't completely accepted by everyone, which leads it often being an awkward experience and this game isn't an exception. I don't know about you, but when I play arena games, I want full control over my weapons. The only thing within your control is your movement and your aim. You'll auto-attack based on the music, which makes things feel more awkward than you realize. You'll find yourself surrounded by enemies, but without knowing the song inside and out (or having your weapons and health upgraded) you won't know what weapon will work when you need it. Sometimes you'll get weapons coming out the front or the sides...sometimes you won't even fire weapons, meaning you'll have to dodge like a helpless duckling until the song decides it wants to turn the attack mode back on for you. The music is okay, but as I said, it's not for everybody. If you're a fan of Dubstep, you might enjoy it...but you might not enjoy the lack of control that comes with the territory. Speaking of the territory, the environment ranges from either elaborate and creative to downright creepy... So, would I personally recommend this game? To be honest, I wouldn't. I thought I would have a lot more control than I do. When I found that I just stopped auto-attacking, then that's when I really got upset with this product. The whole gimmick is that the game auto-attacks for you based on the beat and rhythem of the songs of each stage. $10 is a high price to ask too, I'd say to wait until DubWars is $2.50-$5 before thinking about buying it. 3/10 The complete awkward experience in my perspective...
I had fun completing this game but I cannot recommend it at full price or even on sale! There is just not enough content and the game suffer from a few things. I think this game is worth about 2€, but if you don't care about price and want to have fun for a short amount of time, it's an okay game.
Positive : + I like the concept, it was done pretty well and it felt good to complete the (too few) levels. I enjoyed my 2 hours spent there. + Even though the music is not my usual taste, I have to say I still liked most of them and they fit the art style and rhythm. Negative : - 10 levels : Too short, not enough music. - The art style has... some questionable choices. There is litteraly no way to know if an object is just from the scenery or something that can hit you until you get hit or pass through once. They look exactly the same. And there are so many effects of the same colours as the enemies. Very weird design decision, as it handicaps the gameplay. - No bosses or events or custom enemies that really are unique. The only one I noticed were some enemies that needed to be shot from the back. - No story. - There is no strategy, you just need to be good at dodging (being able to aim well is not that important, you can just do a spin of doom with your mouse and it actually works super well
I lied : this is a strategy!
). - No explaination for unlocking all the levels. I had to read the forum and find some old posts to find how to do it.
thanks for the most beautiful profile background ❤
