Over the last 5 years, I have learned to appreciate the "walking simulator" as a genre, being somewhat of a hater of this type of game prior to that. It took a long time to sell me the idea of narrative(only) 3D games because most of them were just boring 3D maps pretending to have an artistic purpose, games like the Drowning . Here we have a game with a generic narrative and 3D environment that does not seem to complement the story. Sometimes these games can get away with no gameplay if the narrative is strong, or if they have constant psychological effects - Virginia is a good example. This game tries to tell the story by putting walls of text in front of your face, which should have been done with a voice actor, I mean you only needed one person. As with most low-end games in this genre, the walking speed is absolutely dreadful and unjustifiably so. It takes maybe 35 minutes to get the regular ending, only because you are walking much slower than you can read (could be a 15-minute game). Most of the environment is blocked off with 2 invisible walls, so you can't explore and enjoy the scenery. Believe it or not, there is one thing that I like about this title - it actually has multiple endings. I only found 3 but I think it has at least 4. There are different paths you can take to get a different ending, a good idea but poorly executed. Trying to find those hidden endings and achievements could be fun if the walking speed was not so awful.
Pros:
+ multiple endings / a few secrets
Cons:
- mouse cursor stays on the screen - generic narrative - not particularly immersive, could use voice acting - kinda dull in terms of psychological effects - dreadful walking speed - maps feel kinda random (not complementing the story) Overall Thoughts: 3/10 There are some walking simulators that are very fun, but this game represents everything that could go wrong in this genre. I was absolutely bored out of my mind playing it. Just as a constructive advice for anyone that makes these - if you not making a game with gameplay, find a way to keep the player engaged. Maybe you need to do more psychological effects, or maybe you need to find a better way to tell your story. Walking around a generic 3D map with walls of texts is not artistic, you have to be a little more creative than that.
Drowning
is an interesting title that will be far more relevant to people suffering from depression than, say, someone like myself who has never really felt this way. I do think that for the more catharsis minded developers, creating a walking simulator is a simple and effective means of conveying a message, since it lacks the distractions that might steer you away from the overarching message, which in this case, is dealing with depression. Specifically sabotaging yourself by convincing yourself of a dark reality that only really exists in your mind until you act on that reality and end up alienating yourself as a result. That is what we would call a "vicious circle". As far as the game itself, I found it to be incredibly boring, and that is coming from someone who truly enjoys walking simulators as a genre. Why is it boring? Because within each "school year", at least as far as I played, you only get one set of visuals. For example, the first two years, you simply walk down a static Autumn looking forest path. There is little to no visual variance and the only thing that happens as you walk is you unlock more autobiographical dialogue. There are no events, nothing to change up pacing, or anything else to make the walk interesting outside of reading the author's thoughts periodically. In the third year, the landscape changed, but the basic philosophy of walking through another static environment didn't change. In my estimation, simply changing the visuals more often WITHIN each year while also working on the game's pacing issues would fix this and make it a game I personally would enjoy playing through. Instead, I found myself bored. The topic isn't really anything new, and so if you are going to present the issue of depression with the hope of people playing through and getting a better sense for how that feels, you should put a little more effort into making the experience interesting so a person wants to see it through to the end. Does that mean everybody will feel the same? Unlikely. I'm sure some people will persevere and see this through to the end, but for me personally, that probably will never happen. So, with that out of the way, here is a quick synopsis of the core aspects (as I see them) to this game as with all others.
Story
This has already been outlined, but this is basically the story of a teen coping with depression while alienating his/herself from friends and life in general. I didn't finish the game, but it does seem like the author or whoever the game represents found themselves in a suicidal frame of mind eventually. Hopefully I'm wrong about that though, but it's a logical conclusion.
Gameplay
This is as basic as it gets. You literally just walk along a path, perhaps investigating some stuff off path periodically (and I imagine this was designed to break up the pacing a bit) and reading the developer's thoughts on the topic of depression based on his/her own experiences (presumably).
Audio
I thought the audio was fine overall. The world was pleasant sounding in general.
Graphics
The graphics were nice in a simple, almost water-colored fashion.
Verdict
Overall, I found this game to be lacking. I would like to see the pacing handled better, and in general, I want the game to provide a reason for me to finish it, which it didn't. The topic of depression isn't a new one, and I feel if you are going to focus on catharsis as the medium for your game, you need to offer a better reason to want to experience this outlook. This really isn't a bad game, but it's not good either, and as boring as it was, I am inclined to give it a thumbs down. That said, I was still glad for the opportunity to try the game out and am thankful to my friend who gifted this to me. Hopefully, the developer can sort out the pacing issues especially for his/her next game. Wow einfach Wow.
Drowning is a walking Sim. You will be walking along a path, and there will sometimes text be popping up. It´s Story is fascinating, when you like deep stories. When you like Atmosphere, you´re Money will be good invested. If you are a man of Action, you´re better with Counter Strike or Call Of Duty
A Truly amazing take on depression and well-written storyline created by Polygonal Wolf. - The atmosphere, the music and the story fits perfectly with the theme of depression. - Walk through years 8-12 (5 maps) - You will relate to the theme of depression as the story unfolds in the form of written text. The game is true to walking simulator fans and is a game to own in your steam library.
Drowning isn't really a game it's a walk through story about a boy reaching maturity and discovering he has psychological problems. It's a very nice thought provoking piece of art but if you purchase it thinking it's a game you will be very disappointed. None the less products like this have relevance and I'm sure those who can relate or are interested will greatly appreciate it. It is very well made and takes us on a captivating journey through the formative years of someone with manic depression. Take a look at my game play video to see the first few years of the journey... https://youtu.be/5x_PPwUrDP0 Thanks for watching. Please like comment and subscribe.
