I hate to discourage people from playing a game with creative ideas, but the developers clearly haven't no ability to distinguish between a new idea and ideas that are outdated. Like a lot of reviewers, I have also played 20+ games in this genre, but this is below basic development standards. The most obvious gripes are frustrating within the 1st or second run: - Experience requires not only collection, but disappears after a short time frame. This is extremely limited to build variety, especially considering that you CANNOT DIRECTLY AIM most weapons to clear a path, and there are characters that rely on damage over time. I thought we'd evolved past disappearing XP a year and a half ago, since this is the main improvement that VS brought to the genre. - The game is extremely meta-progression heavy. All except the most basic (damage and attack rate) upgrades are further locked behind achievements to even be able to purchase them. Yes, experience rate, any type of RNG manipulation, and PICKUP RANGE are not unlocked until you kill like 6000 enemies or some other nonsense. The enemy concepts are interesting and enjoyable! Locking progression between an arbitrary grind is a waste of gamers' time AND dev efforts. - Weapons have such long attack intervals (3-6 seconds) that it is difficult to time them (such as moving in the correct direction for a front shooting weapon). This isn't the interesting clunkiness of weapons like in Gunlocked. Everything is just slow. "+5% Movement Speed" is a 3rd tier rarity upgrade. - Textured ground is aesthetically pleasing (Nice!). Ground hazards are interesting for gameplay (Cool!). Small rocks on the ground blocking movement is bad (Boo!) in a genre that involves rapid decisions based on large amounts of visual indicators. Hurtboxes for most hazards are larger than they look on the ground. This game has a lot of potential in terms of creativity. Unfortunately, there are so many basic design errors that make the gameplay frustrating that the grind to see endgame has no appeal. This is a refund and a follow to see if more time in the oven helps Robot Resistors sort itself out.
I have played about 30 of these VS style games and this is definitely on my top 5 in the genre. Fun robot theme. Greatly varied enemy designs and 12 unique playable characters each with their own passives and active abilities that add a lot different strategy to a run. Chad, the fake robot and Heavy Metal are my favorite so far. There is only 2 maps so far, but they are both interesting and the Crystal Cavers has a load of fun design elements and 4 different bosses. If you are a fan of this genre, this is a must play. GG!
Initial impressions after a run: Pretty good game, really enjoy how the enemies get knock-backed from your weapons, the damage numbers popping and bouncing up, the glow that happens when you pickup some exp. All of this hits the dopamine receptors. The only minor issues I have is the UI, something about it seems messy to me and it's kind of hard to look at. Also, the game is probably balanced around this, but seeing your exp orbs despawn right in front of you right before you can touch it feels kind of bad. Maybe have the exp orb give less over time to a possible minimum amount instead of disappearing might alleviate this issue, but that's just me. Other than that, pretty nice game!
This game keeps you in that sweet spot of feeling like you are just behind where you need to be. It forces you to constantly move and adapt to the enemies on screen instead of standing in one spot and watching them die. Compared to other games in this genre it has much more interesting enemies and mechanics. Robot cave bears? Check. Slimes that slow you down? Check. Leveling up can give you a chance at enhanced upgrades that you normally may not pick but maybe the improved one is worth it. These choices make each run feel unique.
Game still has a long way to go in terms of contents and tweaking, and development will be slow I believe based on their roadmap and introduction, but I am enjoying my time playing it, it somehow feels different from all those other VS clones, and I like that they went with robot theme with a shield and active abilities. The fact experience gems expire also adds quite a bit to the difficulty and play style, as we level up far slower than in any of those other similar games. I also like how everything they have included works, for example controller support is very well done. I refunded several similar games due to how poor controller support was, so I thank them for remembering that many people play that way. Once I have unlocked everything, I'll come back every once in a while as new content gets added. Looking forward to seeing it evolve.
Normally, I don't buy games in Early Access but based on the recommendations of my friends I went for this one and it did not disappoint. Easily worth the price, this simple yet addictive little game has a surprising amount of depth and a lot of fun easter eggs, unlocks, and progression. I don't even like Vampire Survivors that much but I really enjoyed how much thought went into the little details of this game, like having enemies have unique special abilities and the fact that the second map has a completely different win condition from the first. I can't wait to see what the next content is for this game. Highly recommend.
REALY fun game, love the art and just cant get enough of the action packed gameplay!
This game doesnt differ that much from other games from this genre however that doesnt make it any less fun. It has its frustrating points that you either accept or dislike, such as slow movement speed (can be helped with upgrades) and things like timing of dropped items, but you get used to it. You can unlock levels, characters and upgrades so it does offer some replayability however this is not a game I'd see myself put 100+ hours in. I do believe it is worth it for the price though!
Fun and really smooth. This game worked perfectly on my steam deck!
context: 100% completion after ~15 hours of gameplay as of patch 1.1 For a few bucks this is a real neat bullet heaven style game. The robot theme is cool, there is a decent roster of playable characters, and a small handful of stages to play through. The experience orbs timing out is a controversial take, but I thought it was interesting and not overly punishing. It made pick up radius an extremely valuable stat to upgrade and influenced character pathing instead of the typical 'just hold a direction and eventually turn back around and pick up everything you missed over the last 3 minutes'. The enemy sprites are so varied, enemies have different attacks, ranged, melee, charged attacks, bouncing projectiles, leaving pools on the ground, creating terrain to block movement, area damage, tons of variety! Meta progression is pretty quick, and hovering anything not yet unlocked will tell you what you need to unlock it. Nothing is too grindy to unlock, and some of the hidden achievements are neat little puzzles. I liked that there was an overarching "story" of sorts that linked the stages together, if you want to call it that. Devs are active, responsive, and clearly putting some love into this game. Look forward to their next project!
