DROD is a unique puzzle-logic game with clever mechanics and an engaging story. It is a turn-based top-down 2-D dungeon puzzler. The game play has amazing depth through emergent behaviors as puzzle elements are combined. There is a simple interface and only a handful of commands to master.

Absolutely disgusting amount of gameplay even before you get into the fan-made levels. You will never finish everything.
DROD exists longer than most of you and that's most likely the reason not many people know it. But if I had to pick one puzzle game, it would probably be the DROD series. They offer hundreds if not thousands of hours of entertainment. Despite the seemingly simple game mechanics, the puzzle can get fiendishly difficult later on. Gunthro And The Epic Blunder is not the first part in the series, but it's best to start with.
you should play this if you like puzzle games i got this game 50% off (and the dlc for between 70% and 50% off) and it feels like it would be a good value at 200% price lmao If you like steven sausauge roll, baba is you, monster expendition or just sokuban generally, i dont think I can recommend this enough. It really makes you feel you're figuring stuff out, and gives you the genuine aha moment that i love in these kinds of games. of course, I am only 5 levels deep into the first dlc, at about 15 hours. It seems that there are hundreds of hours of content here, especially with all the mods (holds) that are on the forum. I feel like i've barely scratched the surface and I imagine i'll play this a lot in the upcoming weeks, and maybe ill actually finish it lol edit at 60 soemthing hours; beat it, still great, working through some easy holds now and having a blast

As other reviewers rightfully state, this is the best puzzle game ever made. What I think makes it special is the breadth and depth the game derives from combinations of puzzle elements it accumulated over the years. Take the wraithwing as an example, a giant flying bat creature that attacks you in groups, but tries to stay 5 cells away from you if isolated. If wraithwings are in a room, you have be aware of their changing behavior as they come together and try to keep them on the same side or behind cover. You also need to have a plan of how you are going to pin the last few stragglers. Wraithwings are flying, which means that they can move over bottomless pits (where you can't follow), and can't trigger pressure plates. Wraithwings can be positioned to create a safe space when surrounded by other monsters, or to manipulate where those monsters go, or to prevent the spawning of roaches and tar babies, or create a dead end to trap serpents and so on and so forth. The elements can be arranged in ingenious ways, forcing you to manipulate each room in just the right way, leading to some of the highest density of Eureka moments across all puzzle games. It's a really good cerebral challenge, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a serious thinky game. Gunthro and the Epic Blunder is a great starting point, and afterwards you should play through King Dugan's Dungeon, Journey to the Rooted Hold and The City Beneath. Just be aware that KDD was the first level set ever made: the game was still conceptualized as part dungeon crawler and there is a lot of plain monster slaying. It still works as a great slow tutorial, but some of its design decisions have aged poorly (e.g. it has a honest to god maze level in it).
only took me 20 years best [strike]puzzle[/strike] game ever made
Outstanding puzzle game with great mechanics and (mostly) fun optional challenges. If this game's puzzle system was created today, I would still crown the creator a genius.
If you have never tried DROD, you're missing out. In addition to the main games there are (approximately) one quadrillion user-made levels which are mostly worth playing. For the price of this game you're getting hundreds if not thousands of hours of gameplay.
