Right now, I feel like there's way too little and what is there is incredibly unbalanced. There is no way to adjust the difficulty, Nena (the summoner class) doesn't even summon that often due to a lack of cards that can summon, not like that matters anyway because shield spam is busted on her. The game doesn't even half of the things it advertises on the store page. There barely isn't any stories, the events are just long winded nonsense which are badly translated, the result screen at the end of each run isn't even fully translated and the third character they advertised isn't even available yet. I was able to see everything and beat the game twice in four runs. I can not recommend this in the state it is now. The only interesting thing is has going for it is Nena's mood gimmick (which is quite easy to negate the downsides of) and the weaponary system (even if it snaps the game's balance in half). This game needs a lot of work and I rather you didn't spend your money on this until they put in the work.
This game has a lot of depth for what looks like fairly simple card mechanics at the start, and keeps building on it as you go through new runs. My only gripe is leveling up a character and getting upgrades takes quite a while, but thankfully whenever you do get an upgrade for a weapon it's quite substantial. You won't be getting small incremental increases like Hades, but working towards bigger upgrades.
Slay the spire-esque with added mechanics. Seems promising but definitely needs some spellchecking/grammar review in English.
This game has decent graphics. But the game is still pretty simple. The fun: The game has potential. there are some fun combos. A nice array of things to combo (weapons, equipment, cards) The kinda fun: There are multiple exploits that break the game. (getting 300+ armor is interesting for a little bit.) The not fun: This game is very buggy. multiple runs just freeze or the game crashes. some animations get strange. Also, at 300-ish armor, sometimes enemies just died with full health. This is very short right now.
Reviewing card games is what we do!
I played version of Theseus Protocol just before it was released into EA. I was going to say that it's an ok roguelike deckbuilder but lacked anything that would differentiate it from other games on the market. It had systems like weapons and positioning which mostly didn't matter. However there was an update for the EA release and oh my, it improved the game substantially. Not only positioning matters more and weapons have upgrades now, a lot of cards got rebalanced and are in a much better state. Don't get my wrong, the positions mechanic could still be more impactful, and weapon upgrades are a bit mundane, but to have such a big improvment makes me very hopeful that the devs will turn an already solid game into a great one. To say a little bit about the gameplay, Theseus Protocol is a roguelike deckbuilder straight to the core, and that's not a bad thing as it does it well. Aside from the regular roguelike deckuilding stuff it allows you to banish cards in order to charge up your weapon, so even even if you are dealt a bad hand, you can still do something. There are also 3 positions characters can be in: front, back and middle, with the ability to push and pull enemies into each other dealing damage. Some enemies produce special effects on some positions, so while not game deciding, it can be advantageous to position yourself correctly during battles. Charging weapons by banishing cards is a neat idea, but weapons themselves don't always feel very impactful and usually do just a bit of extra damage, but with upgrades and new weapons this changes for the better. Otherwise, the card play is well done. The main mechanic's are not entirely unique however, (buffs debuffs around damage, evasion, block cards etc) but it's a tried and true formula that works. Together with powerful artifacts you can make really fun and OP decks. There are two characters with third on the way. While the first character currently lacks any special rules, the second character has an interesting mood mechanic that is affected by cards you play. It's works quite well, but being in the 60-100 mood can feel a bit too strong now. As with most EA games, it could benefit from more content but it's in a solid state for an EA game. So to the question whether to get this game as a card game fan: I would say definitely, or if you are not into EA, at the very least, it's worth the wishlist to see how it progresses.
The positive
+ Solid card play, with a lot of potential other supporting mechanics (positions, moods, weapons) + Great music and visual presentation. + Guns being charged by banishing cards is a cool mechanic, but wished it was more interesting than usually some extra damage. + Good initial selection of artifcats that provide interesting effects, and can create strong synergies.
The neutral
* Some missing translations. Events in particular contains wall of text that can be a bit confusing and consequences of choices is not clear. * The second character's special cards can become a bit to prevalent in later acts of the game.
Conclusion:
Very solid card play with good potential to be great. It has good foundations to differentiate itself with future updates, all the while having a fun card play in the meantime. Recommended.
TL;DR Aside from few UI and translation bits that aren't polished, Theseus Protocol is a decent roguelike deck building game. After completing a run with the 1st character, you'll get past the unfriendly UI and find a nice casual fun. Pros: Visuals are good, nice artworks. Though confusing at first, seeing a lot of buff and debuffs being stacked has its appeal. Consuming cards instead of using them is a nice mechanic unique to this game. Has x3 speed for nice speedy runs. You can resume from the start of the turn anytime, though this kinda allows rerolls/save scumming. Cons: A few bugs here and there where the turn won't finish, but exiting to title and resuming can mostly fix it. UI isn't the most friendly or intuitive, such as the tooltip not fully explaining mechanics and terminologies thoroughly. The damage counter doesn't seem to fully account for all buffs making you take unwanted damage if you're trying to be precise, which would be problematic but midway the defense/attack values should inflate enough to be negligible. Some translations to english is unclear, but nothing too bothering. The map path is visually linear, unlike other games of this genre, but only visually. Once you land on the spot you'll see the choices you can make, which I don't know why it's not visible ahead of time when it's mostly set events anyway. Anyways, I'm enjoying this game enough for the price. On a scale of Slay the Spire to Monster Train with the slow paced planning to fast paced wombo combo, then Theseus Protocol feels closer to Monster Train. The battle UI/layout is like Griftlands. The balance feels outta whack though, but they more or less exist in other games as well so it shouldn't be much of a problem. Theseus Protocol is a 7/10.
