I went into Dragonsword hoping it might scratch that old Dragon Nest itch, and somehow it actually did 😭 I was a huge Dragon Nest fan back in the day. I loved its character designs, its world and story, and especially that wonderfully fast, satisfying combat. Dragonsword is very much its own game, but it has that same kind of soul that I’ve been missing for years. It gave me that rare feeling of "oh no, I’m going to lose an unreasonable amount of time to this, aren’t I?" The combat is genuinely fun and engaging rather than something I’m just tolerating to get to the next story scene. The characters are gorgeous, I’m already attached to several of them, and I’ve been enjoying the story much more than I expected. Exploration is fun too - there’s always something else I want to poke my nose into - and I LOVE that if I’m in the mood to just switch my brain off and grind for ages, the game happily lets me do that. Also: the mounts. They are adorable. And, miracle of miracles, they’re actually useful instead of just being cute things I summon once, admire for ten seconds and forget about. Obviously there’s still plenty of room for the game to grow, but that honestly just makes me excited. I really, really want to see where the story goes, what new territories we’ll get to explore, and what characters they add next. If you were one of those people who loved Dragon Nest years ago, I especially recommend giving Dragonsword a try. I’m not saying it’s “Dragon Nest 2” or that it should be - it has its own identity - but there’s something in its DNA that feels wonderfully familiar. It’s been a very long time since a game made that particular little Dragon Nest-loving part of my brain this happy. ❤️

Short and to the point: the game is completely overwhelming in the sense that I never really know where I’m supposed to go. I had never played a gacha game before, because the whole pay-to-play slop thing turns me off completely, even though a lot of these games look genuinely good. Dragonsword Awakening therefore felt like a real breath of fresh air at first — but that changed quickly. The game feels very thin, with too many resources you have to collect through various endless grinds. Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
Visuals:
It looks okay. The important characters stand out, they’re varied and generally well done. The remaining NPCs, on the other hand, already start looping extremely often in the first two minutes in town. The art style is pretty, but it can’t keep up with other titles in the same genre.
Animations
Hah! HAH! The fights might look spectacular visually, but everything outside of combat is so lazily done. Actions aren’t even shown — they’re just implied. Character A pulls Character B away because they screwed up — you see none of it. The characters just idle around.
Voice acting:
The biggest problem for me is that there’s only the Korean voice track. At the very least an English dub should have been included for the global release.
Controls + combat system:
Giga boring. Auto-attack spam, two action skills, and two combos that can be executed under certain conditions. Some skills let you switch from one character to one of the other two in the active team and trigger their combo skill. That’s fun for the first 2–3 hours, after that it becomes extremely repetitive.
Characters:
Clichéd stereotypes. That’s really all there is to say. You look at the design and immediately know what you’re getting.
Story:
It lost me, because everything in the game world sidetracks you. The story itself is told through quests, most of which are dull fetch quests, often with routes that go from A to B, from B back to A, then to C, back to A, then to C again. Nowadays you can do this better.
Gacha mechanics:
Since I’m a newcomer to the genre I can only say this much: it’s too much. All the items, the in-game shops that require a resource that functions exactly like premium currency in actual gacha games — except you earn it by playing. On top of that there are daily quests and weekly quests… in a single-player game? Why?!
Verdict:[h/2] Sometimes less is simply more. Dragonsword Awakening is packed with so much stuff I can only describe it as “screen noise.”
All in all not a terrible game from what little I played. However, if you're looking for rewarding gameplay and combat mechanics, this is not it. If instead you want a game where you mindlessly press the attack button until it prompts you to switch characters, or prompts you to do a special attack, and that's how you win? This game is 100% for you. It's brainless as all hell. Looks pretty, neat characters, ridable familiars is a nice twist I guess, other than that it's like Genshin if you took all the flavor out. However, if you want Genshin but with no p2w or gacha? Here ya go
