yes so good blackwall so handsome
The game really breaks immersion for me because the character design and world-building don’t feel internally consistent. In a setting that’s clearly inspired by a Western European fantasy world, the way diversity is implemented feels disconnected from the lore and setting. Diversity itself isn’t the issue, in games like Mass Effect handle it very well because it fits naturally within a science fiction universe built around multiple species and civilizations. Here, it feels more like a modern overlay rather than something that belongs to the world, which makes it harder to stay immersed. This already stood out in earlier entries, but from what I’ve seen of Veilguard, it seems to go even further in that direction, to the point where it no longer appeals to me. I ll never finish this game and should stop here for now.
i want to throw a slice of cheese on solas' head to see if it sticks UPDATE: i've had various copies of this game for over a decade but only now have i properly gotten the hang of it (and gotten the hell out of the hinterlands) and the more time goes on the more i'm glad that i didn't figure this game out as an obnoxious blorbo-hungry teenager, because if i'd gotten my mitts on cullen rutherford back then, it would have permanently changed my brain chemistry. hell, i think he's permanently changed my brain chemistry now.
I am very late to this review, oops. I played this series completely out of order, going from DA4, to 3, 2, and finally 1. So coming into Inquisition, I already had a weird sense of the world and its future, which made this feel like filling in a very large gap. How did we get from here to here, if you catch my drift. The biggest shift here is the open world. Compared to the more linear structure of earlier Dragon Age games and DA4 as well, this one just hands you massive zones and says go getem tiger. Which dont get me wrong, i DID. I poked into every corner, climbed every hill, and grabbed every collectible I could get my hands on, of which their were many. I ended up 100%ing the world itself, even if I did not go as far as fully completing the game since that asks for multiple runs. Its the kind of exploration that feels rewarding at first and then quietly turns into a checklist, especially in places like the Hinterlands where you start questioning your life choices. Visually, its a clear step up from the older games, but somehow I still spent the entire game mildly annoyed at my own face. I could never quite get my character to look the way I wanted. Maybe it was the creator, maybe it was my first run decisions, maybe it was elf versus human expectations, but every cutscene just never felt like me. It is not game ruining, just annoying. Companions are where this game really does its heavy lifting FOR ME. I romanced Cullen after an embarrassing amount of indecision between him, Solas, and Blackwall. I actually messaged my best friend about it 186 times. I will absolutely be going back for Solas at some point because it feels like one of those story routes you are supposed to experience at least once. The cast overall is strong, though a few of them felt like they needed more time in the oven. Vivienne, Josephine, and Sera did not hit as hard for me, while others carried the emotional weight easily. Varric is back and remains perfect. I would, in fact, die for him, no notes. A lot of the companion stories are genuinely memorable. Blackwall, Solas, Cole, Dorian, Iron Bull, Cassandra, Cullen, all brought something interesting to the table. Once I actually took the time to set up companion tactics properly, combat started to click in a much more satisfying way. It is a little more limited than earlier entries with the ability cap, but there is still enough depth there to make builds feel meaningful. I played as a mage and had a great time with it. Being a mage adds a lot to the worldbuilding and how people react to you, which I always enjoy. I did feel a bit lost when it came to building my character at times, but after checking a few guides I found a rhythm that worked for me. I tend to default to healing and support while letting the rest of the party handle damage, which felt both effective and more fun for me. The story itself leans heavily into politics and leadership, which works in its favor. Managing the Inquisition, making decisions that shape Thedas, and dealing with the fallout of those choices all feel appropriately weighty. That said, the pacing can suffer. There is a lot of filler content that feels closer to MMO style tasks than meaningful side quests, and it can bog things down if you let it. The DLC is where things really tighten up. The added content is excellent, and the final story expansion delivers a much stronger and more satisfying conclusion than the base game alone. It feels less like extra content and more like something that should have been there from the start. Overall, it is a game of emotional highs and lows. The world is beautiful and fun to explore until it is not. The characters are compelling, even when a few feel underdeveloped. The systems are deep, even when they get a little clunky. It is messy, ambitious, and easy to sink a lot of time into, especially if you are the type who cannot leave a map uncleared.
