Story rich single player campaign with five endings, meta elements, and fully voiced briefings, where each mission has "standard" and "unconventional" victory!

A beautiful, original soundtrack.
You can pet a dog. (Yes, you read that right!)

DR4X includes an in-depth skirmish customizer, allowing you to design (and share) distinct fantasy settings complemented by a broad range of gameplay styles! Decide your realm's age, its savagery level, the types of bandits and kinds of monsters, invading dark forces, and much, much more! Occasionally, your skirmish settings even unlock new win conditions.
Once you've made your choices, the world is procedurally generated, incorporating elements like artifacts that are randomly created in accordance with the age of the realm.
After which you can dive into a lively ever-changing world where, without intervention, dens of beasts and camps of bandits will spread across the realm on their own, paired with unique random events that bring the world to life based on your settings.
Before jumping in you can choose your faction and each faction uses different resources and completely unique playstyles.
Research powerful technologies and utilize game changing "Tile Effects", such as the Cult's ability to do a "Mass Sacrifice" when building hideouts! Or the Kingdom's ability to Annex all surrounding buildings by building a guard house next to them!

Do you want to fight other empires? Or destroy the monsters infesting the realm. Or maybe even be the monsters infesting the realm! It is all your choice!

If you're not inclined towards skirmishes, the game also offers a unique single-player campaign, complete with five endings and a series of unlockable missions. Each mission has voiced briefings, reminiscent of classic retro games, and has multiple 'routes' to victory. Set against the dramatic backdrop of a realm under a mysterious invasion, this campaign blends modern, story-intensive visual novel elements with completely unique meta horror aspects and 'Coffee Break' 4X gameplay. There are 5 different possible endings!

Everything is fine.

Its. Perfectly. Safe.

A surprise hit. You can build units, build buildings, this game has a simple economy and unit tactics, just enough to give you that "just one more turn" type of game. Before I brought this game, the screenshots didn't make it clear if the UI was smooth and easy to use. I'm glad to say it is good and easy to use. This was a big deal, for a fun, action type of game, you need to have a good UI and this certainly is good enough for an enjoyable experience. The variety of the game will give you endless hours of random fun. The tactics are valid and as mention you need to balance your spending on economy buildings and units for the long run. I paid full price and don't regret it. Extra note: This game is still being regularly updated and enhanced. An absolute gem of a game.
I really want to give this a positive review because I can see the effort the dev has put into this project and I believe it should be rewarded but I can't because I would be recommending this as a game people should spend money on. Try this game when/if its free but as it is I can't recommend buying it. There is a strategy game in there somewhat akin in mechanics to Warlock. Where the game is let down is in its presentation and graphics. The colour scheme is (if my term is correct) way over saturated and is ugly. The in-game graphics are very simple 3D tokens which are also ugly and create little connection to what a unit is supposed to be. City tiles are functional but boring and create no connection to the world. Even the menus don't pull the player in but rather push the player away. The sad thing is the dev clearly has artistic skills when it comes to 2D artwork. Its very stylised but still shows talent. I'd still argue they need work learning to use less strong colours but if the game was done in 2D with toned down colours with nice 2D tokens I could recommend it. But as it is everything about the presentation makes this game a struggle to play. Even the tooltip box sits awkwardly on the cursor making it "extend" the cursor so I'm regularly clicking on wrong things. If the dev wants any commercial success I'd say ditch the 3D and go pure 2D. Tone down the saturation, I love the 2D style of your art but I don't want to play a comic book as a 4x. Tighten up the UI. As it is I think you're making a game for yourself, which is fine as long as you're not asking people to pay for it. There is too much competition in the strategy/4x right now for this to compete as it is now.
A dark medieval strategy game that has a bit more going on underneath. (for transparency, yes, I'm the artist) All puzzles aside, this is a strategy game at it's core. Build troops, send them toward their death, figure out which terrain has advantage over which (forests provide defense, for example. Mountains hit lower ground harder.) Think like a turn-based Warcraft 1. Even if it is sometimes confusing to a non-strategy game player like myself, the controls feel good to use. Pieces on the board jump at attention, mouse-click go CLACK, WASD to move camera, etc... Turns go quick and each scenario feels like it's meant to be solved in short order, rather than drag on like most 4X games. Outside the main campaign, there's a clear ARG or Unfiction story unfolding which is evolving as the game grows closer to 1.0. The dev is dedicated and updates frequently. There are mini-games and story everywhere and I, despite my position, can honestly say I don't understand it all. If you're into that kind of thing, there's some puzzles to solve. If you're not, Hey, the base game is good.
A basic but fun civ-like strategy game. While veterans of the genre will no doubt find it very basic, its gameplay is accessible and satisfying, with a hint of something more going on in the background. It almost feels like a cursed version of one of those cheap PC games you'd get at a school book fair. Though it does feature campaigns, there's also a fairly neat scenario generator with a ton of options available, one of which is the reason I discovered this game in the first place: The new addition of The Noderooms. While featuring the same gameplay, the Noderooms introduces liminal exploration elements in a 4X format, which probably sounds wildly out of place. However, I found it surprisingly enjoyable to move my pieces into the fog of war, revealing tiles featuring nicely complex artwork that gives the space a real sense of vastness and variety. The idea of "claiming" parts of the noderooms and fighting factions of creatures within, all while exploring and reading flavor text regarding newly discovered areas, was far more satisfying than I would have expected.
Alright here's my thoughts after many hours with the game on and off Steam, as a player that enjoys strategy games but isn't that great at it. There's certainly a learning curve but overall this is a solid and fast paced turn based strategy game. There's the campaign but to me the real meat is the skirmish mode. You have the freedom to create interesting world scenarios populated with several factions with unique play and challenges. If any one thing stands out to me, it's the opponent AI. Each faction will play to it's strength to give a real challenge for the player, while playing by the same rules as the player. No surprise spawns or ignoring resources here. This can also be a double edged sword, as you need to actually play well to break through and gain the advantage over an equal opponent, and even a weaker enemy can hold you off for longer than you'd expect, while a stronger enemy can be a threat to you and the whole map. Overall, it's probably not for everyone. But it's got charm, unique quirks and I think it's definitely worth the time for anyone that even casually enjoys this type of game.
What a strange, strange little fantasy 4x game.
A unique game with big ideas. Some will find it rough around the edges, but it's fun and fascinating, and you won't find anything else like it. The core game plays much quicker than most 4Xes, but can still scratch the itch. There are asymmetrical factions in the vein of Endless Legends with unique mechanics. And then things get really weird... without spoiling too much, there is a postmodern story for those who are up for a good rabbit hole. I believe DR4X is being created by a solo developer. You can tell that it's a labour of love. A big AAA studio or even a larger indie team would never produce something so strange and bold. I personally find the art a bit rough, particularly the UI, but it's bursting with character, like a Flash game from the golden days. Recommended for fans of horror games, meta-narrative, or 4X games that are a little different!
This game is much to my liking. If you like games like the Battle for Wesnoth, you will probably like this. It also has tons of easter eggs, and a funky vibe throughout the whole game. For its full price and what you're getting, it's a steal.
This game really surprised me, there is a lot of depth to the tactical play and the fact that you have so many game options, no game is ever the same. Let me express that the setup options for this game is really cool and allows for you to build the world and its inhabitants from so many different options. Anyone that is on the fence, all I can say is this is unique, , fast, fun and so many options. Note: This game is also getting regular updates from a very caring and enthusiastic developer.
This is a weird 4X game. Some of its weirdness is in the UI. Some of it is in the way it speaks to the player. It deliberately wrecks your assumptions for how a 4X game runs. At this price, 1.20 CAD, it is worth a look.
