Doors of Insanity is a roguelike deck-building dungeon crawler developed by One Shark and published by Neon Doctrine that embraces chaos, humor, and strategic experimentation in equal measure. Set within a strange and twisted interpretation of purgatory, the game throws players into an endless labyrinth filled with mysterious doors, each one leading to unpredictable encounters. Rather than presenting a traditional narrative-driven adventure, the game focuses on the thrill of exploration and discovery as players navigate deeper into the dungeon while assembling a deck of cards capable of surviving increasingly dangerous battles. The concept is simple but effective: every door represents a decision, and every decision has the potential to either strengthen your character or lead to disaster. The core gameplay revolves around a deck-building combat system that emphasizes careful planning and strategic adaptation. At the beginning of each run, players start with a modest collection of basic cards that represent attacks, defensive abilities, and utility actions. During combat encounters, these cards are drawn into the player’s hand and must be played using a limited resource system that determines how many actions can be taken each turn. Enemies also act during each round, forcing players to constantly evaluate whether they should prioritize offense, defense, or setting up future turns. As players progress through the dungeon, they gain opportunities to add new cards to their deck, remove weaker ones, or upgrade existing abilities. The result is a constantly evolving strategy where the composition of the deck determines the player’s overall approach to combat. What makes the deck-building particularly engaging is the wide variety of card effects and synergies available throughout the game. Some cards deal direct damage, others apply status effects such as poison or vulnerability, and many introduce unusual mechanics that can radically change the flow of battle. Building a successful deck often requires careful synergy between these abilities, encouraging players to experiment with different combinations to find powerful strategies. Since each run offers a different set of rewards and card choices, players must adapt their tactics based on the resources they acquire rather than relying on a single predetermined build. This dynamic system ensures that no two runs feel exactly the same. Exploration is structured around the game’s signature door system, which gives the experience its name and personality. Instead of navigating a traditional dungeon map, players choose between different doors that lead to a variety of events. Some doors trigger combat encounters against monsters or bosses, while others contain merchants, mysterious characters, treasure chests, or unusual narrative events. These interactions often include humorous choices that can either reward players with valuable upgrades or create unexpected setbacks. The sense of unpredictability is central to the game’s design, making each new door feel like a gamble that could dramatically alter the outcome of the run. Another distinctive element of the gameplay is the incorporation of dice mechanics during combat. In addition to playing cards, players can utilize dice that generate random effects or bonuses depending on the outcome of their roll. These dice introduce an additional layer of unpredictability that can sometimes turn the tide of battle. A well-timed roll might provide extra damage or defensive bonuses that allow players to survive difficult encounters, while unlucky results may force players to adjust their plans mid-turn. This mechanic complements the card-based combat by adding an element of chance that reinforces the game’s chaotic theme. Progression in Doors of Insanity extends beyond individual runs through a variety of unlockable systems. As players continue exploring the dungeon and defeating enemies, they gain access to new cards, relics, and equipment that expand the range of strategies available in future attempts. Relics in particular can significantly alter gameplay by providing passive bonuses or introducing entirely new mechanics that influence how cards behave during combat. Some relics strengthen offensive abilities, others improve survivability, and a few offer strange effects that encourage unusual playstyles. These unlockables help create a sense of long-term progression even when a run ends prematurely. The visual presentation of the game adds a strong sense of personality to the experience. The art style is exaggerated, grotesque, and intentionally bizarre, featuring characters and monsters that look like twisted cartoon creations. Many enemies appear humorous yet unsettling, combining dark fantasy elements with exaggerated designs that give the game a distinct identity. The environments are equally strange, reinforcing the feeling that players are wandering through a surreal and unpredictable version of purgatory. Complementing the visuals is an energetic soundtrack that helps maintain tension during combat encounters while enhancing the game’s overall chaotic atmosphere. Despite its strengths, Doors of Insanity is not without its flaws. The roguelike structure means that failure is frequent, and some runs may end abruptly if the player encounters particularly difficult enemy combinations or fails to draw the right cards at the right time. While the randomness is part of the game’s appeal, it can occasionally create situations where success feels heavily dependent on luck rather than strategy. Additionally, some players may find that certain card combinations or relics are significantly stronger than others, which can lead to balance issues in certain runs. Even with these occasional frustrations, the game succeeds in delivering an entertaining and highly replayable roguelike experience. Its blend of deck-building strategy, unpredictable exploration, and quirky humor creates a game that feels fresh and energetic. The constant discovery of new cards, relics, and bizarre encounters ensures that each journey through the dungeon offers something different. For players who enjoy roguelike deck-builders that emphasize experimentation and chaotic gameplay, Doors of Insanity provides a unique twist on the genre. Ultimately, Doors of Insanity stands out as a creative and entertaining entry in the deck-building roguelike space. While it may not reach the same level of polish as some of the genre’s biggest titles, its distinctive art style, unpredictable gameplay systems, and dark sense of humor make it a memorable experience. Players willing to embrace its chaotic nature will find a surprisingly deep and engaging strategy game hidden behind its bizarre exterior. Rating: 8/10

Like many of these very flashy Slay the Spire like games, they have better presentation but the gameplay feels flatter, less interesting and absolutely shorter! Yes, I only did one run (hence "0 hours") but you instantly get the formula and if you've played others like it, you quickly get a feel for what they put in their particular blend. If they continue expanding it and fleshing it out, I'll switch my recommendation, but for now this genre is getting crowded and there's better playing options out there that I'd rather spend my time on.
It's not as deep as Slay the Spire, but it's definitely worth the asking price. Great graphics!

It is a fine game but not one of the games that you would spend countless hours on it
