Still one of my all time favourite FPS games and another Doom game that absolutely stole my heart when I was a boy. Yes, it's a shame that the flashlight was needlessly disregarded for the re-release, annihilating the mood in a few sections and generally bringing down the atmosphere altogether. But what's here remains a satisfying, dark and moody horror shooter, still riffing on all the fun level design of the original with its nasty surprises and ludicrous arsenal. You won't be doing much strafing, but you'll be unleashing hell on plenty of demons all the same in what can be a challenging and punishing experience. Maybe not the best iteration of the game, but you'll still have a terrific time with this release regardless. As others have echoed, it's a shame id Tech 4 wasn't more widely used, but the aesthetic remains iconic. It'll take a lot for this to leave my top 5 list of shooters.
