Far, far too little content and depth for the price. Extremely poor balancing - one 15 minute trip into the Item World (unlocked about 30 minutes in) for any equipment at all, and you'll be oneshotting the entire rest of the game, with zero strategy or effort of any kind ever required. Consider it at an insanely steep discount, and after they're done releasing $30 day 1 DLC that lasts 30 minutes.
Disgaea but action rpg. The gameplay loop is similar to games like Senran Kagura and Neptunia 4 Goddesses Online. (Story bit > Choose a quest > Clear enemies in the area > Kill the boss) During the stages you have regular and strong attacks, skills, dodging and guarding. Monsters can be befriended and brought as allies in battle, which unlocks an ultimate skill. (You can't use it while they're dead) after you clear the stage, you go to the base, where you have npcs like other Disgaea games. It's pretty fun, but can get repetitive after a while. Different weapons help with gameplay variety, but some of them are a bit underwhelming. I also wish there were voice overs during the stages. I can't really pay attention to the dialogue.

Combine the base game with the DLC and it still is not enough content to warrant the full price of just the base game. It's very fun, I enjoy a lot of the Disgaea designs being changed over to Dynasty Warriors style gameplay, and the ever-rising numbers do get you that dopamine hit you'd get from the original games but it's just so incredibly short and small that it doesn't hold up to the scrutiny of purchasing value. DLC should have been a part of the base game and a promise of future, free content extensions would've made this feel way more worth the cash.
I actually quite enjoy playing this, it's pretty fun. But £50 for this is completely unreasonable, Especially with the Scottish based indie game that just came out for less than £20. This is cheap, audio is low quality, graphics are not great, the animations are actually pretty good, and the grind is satisfying as usual in a Disgaea game. It's just REALLY not worth the price
I love Disgaea games, so it is with a heavy heart that I cant recommend this one. I think this was a good idea, just poorly executed. As I view it, the three main problems are: 1) The main character is boring, and you can't get rid of him. He's the only character you can play. You encounter lots of other characters in the game, but none of them are playable. You can get Desco as a buddy to follow you around in battle, but that's as good as it gets. 2) The story is complete nonsense, it's as if they're trying to see how bad they can make the story before people will stop buying their games. I really loved Disgaea, but Disgaea 7 story was pretty bad, and this story is even worse. 3) The Carnage World endgame is well-hidden. If somehow you still have any love left for this game after completing the main story and post-game story, you wouldn't even know there was anything left to do. There is a whole Carnage world to unlock which the game doesn't even remotely hint at. You really have to assume it exists, and try everything to unlock it, or google "disgaea mayhem carnage world unlock", or somehow unlock it completely by accident long after finishing the game. Overall, a good idea, and I want to recommend it because it is so cool to play a 3D battle Disgaea, but after completeing the story, I felt no desire to grind my way through the Carnage endgame with this boring main character. Only buy if you're prepared for disappointment, or feel like wasting your time.
I have been a long standing Disgaea fan and have played since the first one on PlayStation 2. This is not a normal Disgaea game. This is if the Warriors (Koei games) and Disgaea had a collab. Which I have always loved the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai warrior games. So this feels like my two favorite childhood games had a crossover. So if you like mindless hack and slash with a funny story sprinkled in, you'd absolutely love this game. I will start out by saying, this game is indeed extremely overpriced for what it is. Does that mean I didn't get the collectors edition ? of course not, I did get it just to get the classes that -should- have been added with the game. I don't appreciate the cutest female monsters to be behind a paywall. Does the combat get repetitive? Yes. But as someone who genuinely likes hack and slash games while I watch a show on my other monitor, I don't mind it. I love the graphics. I adore the disgaea art style and especially seeing them go full 3D, I swoon. I really hope their next main title game is like this. I like the rng for getting partners. I think it gives the grinding more meaning to it. Of course farming 1 stage for an hour to get a specific monster can be a bit frustrating. But I've played far worse grindy games. And it's basically like going into the item world over and over again (copium). But I think that it's at least a unique title and they're trying new things. At least they didn't make it a phone mobile game like they did to Disgaea 6. I personally have only experienced one bug. Which the Evil Eye in Magichange form will not stop putting me in a blender. (she just keeps spinning and it locks the game). But it's just a quick restart. I haven't had any game breaking bugs on controller besides that one.
So have been a huge fan of the series sense i found DIsgaea 1 on the ps2 many many MANY moons ago, saw the trailer for this game and instantly put it on my wishlist. Game comes out and well... its just ok. Graphics are pretty nice its quite a jump from the sprite work of the older games and for a 3d world its not bad. However it feels like it lost some personality in the transition as the models feel very copy paste and the enemies are the same with the only real difference being the sizes. Combat... combat feels abit rough, mind you there are many weapons to choose from and for the sake of this section I used the "Axe" family of weapons. Its the standard one button for light attack one button for heavy attack that most games in this era use with the multi hit to combo, one good thing is the ability to animation cancel basically out of any attack with a jump or dodge meaning if you mis position or get surrounded (trust me you will be surrounded) you can effectively escape your own stupidity. However the enemies themselves move as if they are getting fired out of a gun and always, always, ALWAYS go for a flank making it quite tedious to figure out enemy positions and watch for attack animations. To counter this the game gives you a ring which shows arrows to all enemies around you which is kind of useless as you can see them tripping over themselves to get behind you, what the game needs is a camera angle that is back just abit more then they offer as it makes it seem as if the company couldnt make the game run smooth without hiding 80% of the enemies in your blindspot. The enemies themselves are fairly easy UNLESS they decide its time to stunlock you in which case the 50 guys behind you you cant see with throw stones, or spells, or in some cases sonic spinball into you over and over and over again knocking you out of combo and keeping you on the ground to get attacked by other more pressing threats. The games narrative is also just ok, there are hints of the usual NIS humor but for the most part just seems like the staff really really REALLy wanted some Flan and thats the premise of the game. The protag is forgettable and his support is equally bland which is a shame as there COULD have been something there. Overall its a fine game, it feels more like a tech demo then an actual fully fleshed out title and I am sad to say that at the time of purchase 59.99usd for base game is way to much. Not only is the gameplay just passable and the plot forgettable but it has an issue with crashes, within my first 3hrs playing the game crashed to desktop between 4 to 5 times usually when finishing off an item world or stage when it was trying to load the hub. A poor showing from NIS and the DIsgaea team as a whole, i would not be surprised if in a few years Mayhem will be as loathed as Disgaea 6 was by the community. Do NOT buy at full price wait for a 70% or higher discount then you would be close to spending what its actually worth, at the current price point and game state it sadly has to be a not recommended from me
The Game is fun and a good time. Very silly yet enjoyable story, good spin off. It's a shame the mission objections are never that interesting. But it works for what it is. Very easy to get OP early on with how quickly you get access to the item world and such. I would like to see a Mayhem 2 down the line, providing they expand on the groundwork they did here. Overall good game, however I think the price is gonna be a big off putter for most people, setting people's expectations way higher than they should be. I'd say get it on sale if you can wait
So I am a long time Disgaea fan, well most all NIS titles actually. I love the endless SRPG we have grown up with and this is not that. This is an ARPG with all the disgaea features. A few of these features have been "dumbed down" to make it more in tune with an ARPG namely the stats. There are only HP, ATK, DEF, MOVE and CRIT then the elemental resistances. This makes it feel a little less than some of the other titles but does help with time consumption. I really like the fresh approach to the series, obviously I want the next SRPG as soon as possible, but this spin-off is a lot of fun. Does it hold a candle to the other titles? Not really, but the depth of the others would make it near impossible to play without a guide of some sort or 10 spreadsheets. Focusing on one main controllable character is an awesome choice so you aren't lost in creating different monsters/human classes and forgetting your next move. The buddy system is a nice trade-off for this though, you can now customize a secondary AI character into any of the (only 16 sadly) monster choices. I am not enjoying only 1 monster weapon though, it would be better to have both to be able to distinguish magic/melee but it is ok I guess. The item world is streamlined to fewer levels than before, but no way to exit early but for button mashing that tracks. Chara world though is different. I don't know if i like it so much but I don't hate it. It seems like they could have done more there than a straight mario-party course with differing levels of difficulty. The rewards initially don't even seem worth it but I guess they gave everyone a different way to grind those stats. The story itself seems short, I think this is due to it being action instead of turn based. There are several chapters just like the others in the series but the Musou mode makes it fly through at a faster pace. The story itself is what I expect from disgaea, off the wall, quirky, inuendos and weird reasons for literally everything happening. Would I say it's worth $60? no... Will I say for a new disgaea player to start here? maybe not but it only gets better after switching I suppose. Will I say avoid it like the majority of the other reviews? No, this is still a pretty solid game, maybe worth the price of the desco DLC or $10 more so if you're on the fence wait until it is on sale. The demo doesn't do this any justice because it drops you in a random level with no idea wtf or where you are going. I needed a new game, I love Disgaea, I hated spending the $60 but I had $15 credit on my account so it didn't hurt AS bad. BTW unlocking carnage dimension isn't really shared at all, but I won't ruin it here, just know you should look it up if you can't seem to get to it. Carnage does exist, it isn't just repeated chapter missions either so there is a bit more story. Initial carnage unlock though I didn't get flattened like i had in previous titles, the difficulty was increased but I think it could have been adjusted a bit more to show true carnage level. Adding 5 stars though does actually hit a lot harder and scales more than I remeber other titles. Give it a shot, find it on sale, but don't just believe the 0.5-4.0 hour reviews... This is Disgaea, I don't even think I would trust my (at this time) 40 hour review. I do like grindy games though and I am taking my time so I am just partially through carnage now... I've been living in the Item world with my Felyn friend =)
1/5. I love Disgaea in all forms. It is enjoyable, crazy and all around amusing. But in its current state, the game is unplayable for me. I don;t know what it is, but on the initial battle maps several sources of light or reflection blind me. They emit a light so potent it hides the enemies and I can't see where they are or how they are attacking. I will refund it for now, but if it works for you, please enjoy it! I just hope that in the future I will be able to play this because I really, REALLY want to love this.
