Pokemon-like game that I was looking for to scratch that itch!
Underrated gem. If you are nostalgic for Game Boy Color monster collecting games, this should scratch that itch. I managed to finish the main story in around 12 hours, which is fine by me. I haven't dabbled in the endgame stuff yet. Very impressive offering from a solo developer. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Loved the Original Pokemon games on Gameboy and Gameboy Color. This definitely invokes a similar feeling as those did. But it has its own twists, quirks, and dark undertones. Really loved my time with this game but I unfortunately lost my save on my old pc once I had upgraded to a better build but I've read there's a way to transfer the save file somehow. Just be aware that (obiously) there are no cloud saves. That's my only gripe.. I love the story, gameplay, and creature designs. If you also enjoyed the original Pokemon games then I think this is definitely up your alley. Really looking forward to Disc Creatures World!
Interesting 3v3 creature collector. The focus on making it only 3 per team, with no chars you can switch in/out like in many other games in order to counter enemy setups, is pretty interesting even if it means I (at least at my current point in the game) default to keeping a varied team comp so that I can adapt to the situation. The monster types are balanced with 2 or 3 weaknesses and strengths each (2+2 or 3+3), with mono type monsters having a minor boost to STAB (Same Type Ability Bonus) compared to dual types, which means dual types aren't always the better option, which can end up being the case otherwise. The story's pretty simple, not being too advanced or silly to get in the way or ruin the mood (most of the time, at least), with some boss battles which add some variety to the gameplay. Simple things, such as healing stations inside areas with monsters are much appreciated, as they remove some of the tedious backtracking simply to restore hp while grinding or progressing in new territory. Monsters are caught/collected through battle by rng, but there are items to increase the chance to succeed in doing so, with a cap of 5x items on a single monster, so you won't be spending forever in a single battle using consumables over and over again. Overall this looks to me like a not too advanced creature collector that still manages to stand out from the rest through its 3v3, retro style look combined with quality of life features and a general gameplay loop + story that doesn't get too silly, which usually tends to be the case with similar games.
If you're checking reviews because you like the games it was obviously inspired by, you should buy this game. This isn't a clone of gen1 Pokémon or Dragon Quest Monsters - but if you enjoyed those games as a kid, it's going to bring you so much joy. This game is so perfectly designed to emulate a Gameboy color game, with the smallest allowances given for modern comforts. It has it's own unique story and monster mechanics, never feeling like it's taking too much from any existing Gameboy game. Plays perfectly on Steam Deck. My only complaint is there are no steam achievements.
It’s a very creative game with a fun story, but its flaws become more noticeable the longer you play. The creature management system isn’t well designed, making team and move changes feel tedious. While the game does have some difficulty spikes, I don’t think they’re too unfair based on my experience so far, if you grind. However, since the battles aren’t particularly engaging, I lack the motivation to do it. There are other issues, but these are the main ones for me. If the navigation and grinding were smoother, the overall experience would improve significantly. Still, I haven’t given up on the game. I want to see the rest of the story and enjoy its fun moments. For now, I’ll try adjusting my playstyle by taking it slow.
This is probably worth the $15 asking price, but it's honestly not that great. I found its world to be surprisingly lacking in personality. It's like a Pokemon clone.. with no identity of its own. Monsters Sanctuary is an example of this concept done much, much better. But not every game has to have the level of polish that one does right? So I'll give it an unenthusiastic recommend. It meets its goal without surpassing it.
