Diesel Punch is a very low quality Russian shovelware third person brawler/platformer. I don't think this is an asset flip based on the very low quality of assets, but that doesn't mean it's by any means a great game, from the lacklustre controls, sluggish handling, aforementioned low quality assets... this is just Russian shovelware. A minimum viable product dumped quickly onto Steam as a cash grab, to get as many rubles as they can. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. The game is very badly optimised, despite having extremely low quality assets and visuals, poor production values and no real reason for a high workload on anyone's system, the game runs the GPU up to 100% immediately. While this may seem to be evidence of cryptomining, Valve checks for that prior to allowing a game on Steam through Steam Direct. It's more likely the developer just had no idea what they were doing and didn't do any optimisation. Regardless of the reason, if you don't want your PC getting thrashed needlessly by bad software, you might want to avoid this game. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players, and the worst part is these weren't genuine players, these were the Russian fake review accounts that the developer paid to make the fake reviews. Since the fake reviews are all done, now the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. It's also important to note the "developer" here has connections to a number of shady Russian asset flippers and review manipulators (Big Black Bear, gigantumgames/Reforged Group etc) who show an organised pattern to scam and defraud gamers with fake reviews and asset flipping the work of others for profit. While reviews are about the games, gamers should be informed when developers act unethically. Whether these connections are the same developer using multiple accounts, or just working closely with other unethical developers, gamers should be warned about the harm to gamers by this developer and their associates. Buying games from unethical developers puts your money at risk. Diesel Punch has the far too high price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the unethical nature of the developer. Remember that if you buy a game from an unethical developer, you're putting your money at risk. They're all written in either Russian or broken English, appear at almost exactly the same time, very shortly after the game launched on Steam, all have a direct Steam purchase of the game, and the accounts are used consistently to write fake reviews for asset flips and other cash grabs/scams. The "Positive" review score on this game should be disregarded due to this blatant, unethical review manipulation. This is done to deceive and scam gamers into paying for a bad product.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Diesel Punch is a fun time for about half an hour. But, at some point the platforming becomes too wonky and unfair. The game feels unpolished. I feel like this could have been a good indie game, but the level design goes from boring to unfair.
Diesel Punch is an indie third-person action game developed and published by Vadd Games that blends gritty dieselpunk aesthetics with straightforward melee-driven combat. Set in an alternate-history world locked in a prolonged industrial war, the game introduces players to Eva, a former engineer who has merged her body with diesel-powered machinery to become a one-woman weapon. This fusion of human and engine forms the foundation of both the gameplay and the narrative, creating a dystopian atmosphere where technology and survival are inseparably intertwined. The story unfolds against the backdrop of a failing nation struggling to maintain dominance in a brutal conflict. As enemy forces adopt advanced diesel technology, Eva is deployed to infiltrate hostile territories, retrieve critical components, and dismantle increasingly dangerous mechanical adversaries. The narrative framing, while not overly complex, provides sufficient motivation for the relentless combat. Between missions, story segments offer glimpses into Eva’s perspective and the deteriorating state of her world, grounding the action in a larger political and emotional context. Combat is the centerpiece of Diesel Punch. Players primarily rely on Eva’s oversized wrench as a melee weapon, delivering heavy, satisfying blows against robotic enemies. The weight and impact of each strike are emphasized, creating a tangible sense of force. In addition to direct melee attacks, Eva has access to secondary tools such as mines and ranged energy bursts, adding tactical flexibility to encounters. While the core loop centers on clearing waves of mechanical foes, the inclusion of varied abilities prevents battles from becoming entirely repetitive. Movement and traversal play a significant role in shaping the gameplay experience. Eva navigates industrial environments filled with hazardous terrain, vertical structures, and destructible elements. The levels often combine combat sequences with platforming sections, requiring players to manage positioning carefully while avoiding environmental dangers. While the design encourages fluid transitions between movement and fighting, certain segments may feel slightly uneven in execution, particularly when precision jumps intersect with high-pressure combat situations. Visually, Diesel Punch commits strongly to its dieselpunk identity. The environments are characterized by metallic textures, industrial machinery, and war-torn backdrops that reinforce the theme of mechanized conflict. Enemy designs reflect a blend of utilitarian engineering and aggressive militarization, enhancing the world’s oppressive tone. Though the graphics are not cutting-edge, they effectively communicate the atmosphere, with explosions, sparks, and mechanical debris adding energy to combat encounters. The sound design complements the aesthetic direction. Metallic clangs, engine roars, and explosive impacts create a gritty auditory landscape that reinforces the sense of weight behind each action. The soundtrack maintains tension without overpowering the gameplay, supporting the industrial mood rather than dominating it. Together, the audiovisual elements create a cohesive identity that distinguishes the game within the indie action genre. While Diesel Punch offers satisfying combat and a distinctive setting, its depth may feel limited for players seeking extensive progression systems or narrative branching. The game focuses on delivering tight, mission-based action rather than expansive customization or RPG-style development. For some, this streamlined approach enhances the experience by keeping the emphasis on moment-to-moment gameplay. For others, the absence of deeper mechanics may reduce long-term replay value. Ultimately, Diesel Punch succeeds as a focused action experience built around impactful melee combat and a strong thematic identity. Its strengths lie in the tactile feel of its fighting mechanics and the immersive dieselpunk world it portrays. Though it may not revolutionize the genre or deliver extensive systemic complexity, it offers a solid and atmospheric journey for players who appreciate industrial aesthetics and direct, weighty action gameplay. Rating: 6/10
A short but very fun game with pleasing aesthetics and a good story for those who like grim worlds where all you can do is play along. The English translation is not perfect but you can tell what the characters are saying for the most part. Definitely worth the price I paid for the game.
I never got past the forest level. The fact that you get sent back to the beginning on death, and that one dumb platforming section exists, is ridiculous. That being said, everything preceding was fun, and I think this game really has potential. Besides, for a dollar, I don't see a problem with a little entertainment and supporting a new dev.
