очень прикольная игра с пиксельным визуалом, затянуло не на особо долго, но было зато интересно проходить. Может быть, еще поиграю, до пройду игру, надеюсь на хеппи энд.
Derange, developed by Dark Gaia Studios and published by GrabTheGames, is a survival horror title that pays homage to the classic horror games of the 1990s while infusing its own modern twists. Set in an eerie and isolated Gothic estate in rural Massachusetts, the game follows two college students, Jessica King and Nathan Romero, as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of their mentor, Dr. Edwin Prestor. From the outset, Derange establishes a thick atmosphere of suspense and dread, drawing players into a dark narrative filled with cosmic horror elements reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft’s work and the unsettling vibes of classic horror cinema. The gameplay in Derange is built on traditional survival horror foundations, emphasizing exploration, puzzle-solving, and careful resource management. Players must navigate the shadowy halls and sprawling grounds of the estate, collecting items, piecing together cryptic clues, and solving environmental puzzles to progress. What sets Derange apart is its “Hive Mind System,” an intriguing mechanic that causes enemies to adapt to the player’s behavior. If a player relies too heavily on one combat tactic or weapon, enemies will evolve to counter those strategies, which increases the challenge and encourages players to vary their approach to both combat and stealth. This adaptive AI adds a layer of strategic depth that keeps encounters tense and unpredictable. Visually, Derange leans into a pixel art style that recalls the graphical limitations and stylistic choices of early PlayStation-era survival horror games. The game’s environments are crafted with great attention to detail, evoking a haunting and claustrophobic ambiance through dim lighting, eerie shadows, and atmospheric sound design. While the character sprites and animations are relatively simple, they effectively convey a sense of vulnerability and tension that amplifies the horror experience. The soundtrack complements the visual mood perfectly, with haunting melodies and unsettling ambient sounds that keep players on edge throughout their exploration. Narratively, Derange excels at slowly unraveling its story through environmental storytelling, found documents, and character interactions. The tale of the estate and its dark past is layered and filled with cosmic horror themes that explore human insignificance in the face of unfathomable forces. The choice to play as either Jessica or Nathan offers subtle differences in perspective and gameplay, enriching the narrative experience and encouraging multiple playthroughs to fully uncover the game’s mysteries. This dual-protagonist design adds variety and depth, allowing players to engage with the story from different angles. Despite its many strengths, Derange has seen mixed reactions from players. Some praise the game’s atmospheric design, faithful recreation of classic survival horror mechanics, and challenging adaptive enemy system. Others have pointed out issues with pacing, combat fluidity, and moments where the horror elements don’t fully land as intended. The game’s difficulty curve and slower narrative pacing may also deter those more accustomed to fast-paced modern horror titles. Nevertheless, Derange holds a special appeal for fans of old-school survival horror, offering a nostalgic yet fresh experience that celebrates the genre’s roots while experimenting with innovative ideas. Overall, Derange is a compelling tribute to classic survival horror that manages to carve out its own identity. Its blend of atmospheric storytelling, challenging gameplay, and pixel art aesthetics creates a gripping experience for those who appreciate slower, more methodical horror games. While it may not be perfect and isn’t designed for everyone, especially those who prefer action-heavy horror, it is a noteworthy indie title that captures the spirit of the genre’s golden era and adds a unique twist with its adaptive enemy system. For players seeking a haunting, immersive journey steeped in mystery and dread, Derange is a worthy entry into the survival horror landscape. Rating: 6/10
Great game
I must say i really like the game and all, BUT after a certain time there is no way to get around the enemies which makes it really annoying. I havent played it to the end because its soo annoying. I you like a challenge its ok to buy but if you want to play a normal game youd be better of without it
Such a wonderful game. For this price tag, I couldn't have asked for more. Dark Gaia went above and beyond polishing this game, and from what I saw, actively engages with the community, be that someone asking for help on the forums, or making a playthrough on YT. As for me, I really enjoyed it. Decided to play trough the game on the hardest difficulty for that true RE vibe, and I must admit it, they totally nailed it. From the vibe to the enemies, heck, even the character selection reminded me of it. Although the game definitely wasn't as hard as I expected it to be, since I had 6 pills, alongside a ♥♥♥♥ load of shotgun ammo by the end of the game, but that's probably on me, since I didn't engage at all, if ever, in any combat encounters. Speaking of combat, yeah, it can be though at times (especially with the Brutes) but I personally found it pretty straight forward, I mean, all you have to do is to hit [space] whenever the ! mark appears above your head. I personally didn't mind it, but in case you did, I bet you didn't make it past the Mine chapter now did you? To be fair, it's definitely THE hardest chapter in the game, and the shortest one too, but I definitely understand yer frustration from dying to that one Brute in the mansion for the 10th time. Oh... woops. Spoilers. So just skip this part in case you don't want me to spoil part of the mid game for ya. Every one good? 'Ight.
once you exit the Mines and head towards the Mansion, you are about to be slapped in the face with THE most unbalanced part of the entire game (also my only complaint about the game) in which almost every single enemy (except for spiders) are replaced with brutes, which means that if you were like me, and avoided combat entirely in the first half, now you are about to have the worst time of your life. Especially if you left both zombies alive in certain corridors, in which case now you have to dodge THE fastest in game enemy in extremely claustrophobic corridors.
*ahem* Back to the spoiler free part, here's how I would recommend the game for ya'll. 1. If you suck at resource managing, don't play anything above normal difficulty, since the Nightmare difficulty heavily relies on it. 2. If you don't like puzzles, than this game isn't for you, since most of the time you'll be running up and down the mansion doing non linear puzzles (unlike in RE2 remake *cough* *cough*) which means that you'll have to figure out most puzzles by heavily using the neurons in yer brain! Also, the game doesn't hold your hand, like at all, so if you get stuck it's entirely on you to figure out what to do next, since all of the text/number based puzzles are completely randomized. And that's about it. If you played the game you might notice that I left out most of the important stuff, but that's cuz I think it's more fun to go in a bit more blindly into a game like this, rather than to have a review spoil the entire game for ya. Oh, and if you ended up reading all of my thoughts on this, I hope that you have an amazing rest of your day!
Nice horror game I really need a sequel
I really liked this. It has a lot of subtle and not-so-subtle nods to Resident Evil. The combat can get quite difficult, it really just depends on how you play the game though. I had some difficulties with a few of the puzzles, but I'm not good at puzzles so there's that to consider.
Yet another example of pretentious RPG Maker trash; encountered the phrase "WHAT THE HELL?!" within 5 mins of play, as is the law of all such RPG Maker games written by people who LARP instead of knowing how to actually write good character dialog and a good story. I got this in a bundle, so I'mma mad I gave this dev money.
Sadly, my current impressions of this game are that though it was well conceived and has a great deal of promise, its combat system is frustrating and doesn't respond the way that I expect it to. I do want to note that the dev has said that the combat is supposed to be a last resort--which makes sense for survival horror in general--but honestly, I'd just rather there be fewer enemies and no way to fight back than the system that was implemented. I'm not that far into the game and intend to keep playing, so maybe my opinion will change, but I doubt it.
