It doesn't play for me, probably for the best. If you do get it running though, prepare for a challenge, Dark Souls is like Bubble Bobble compared to this.

This game is such a gem. Combat is enjoyable even with the tank controls. I play with keyboard and remapped the buttons so I was able to adapt fairly quickly I dare say I'm pretty cracked at combat already. I just love the enemy strategies and placements, combined with the combos you are able to pull off alongside spells, items, and jumping around doing flips. It is fairly simple to get into, you can bait out in order to fight one on one then just block and punish but you can also express your skill with enough practice and memorizing patterns. Sometimes you will be overwhelmed and that's when you have to run or jump around and utilize spells and gear creatively. Enemies will swarm you, ambush you, and some attacks have them end up behind you or they are able to jump around and over you. Weapons break so you aren't always using the strongest thing you find. The inventory system can be a struggle especially when in the midst of combat. I highly recommend save scumming as the game rewards your expertise in order to prep yourself between combat. The trial and error is very enjoyable and not too punishing as long as you save constantly and often times funny in a screw you kind of way, like the treasure chest in the very first level you have to jump to get to. If you like banging your head against walls and constantly discovering secrets this game has plenty of that, nothing too difficult but it still feels rewarding considering you can't trust anything in this game. The art style is incredible for something that released pre 2000's. It is just oozing with early dark fantasy charm, from the enemies to the map design, weapons, spells as well as the various models used for ambiance. The brutality of it is so distinct and unique from any other fantasy game I've experienced it is downright addicting how you hack enemies to pieces and the different ways your character reflects and animates the damage they've taken recoiling in pain. Whether you fall to your death, are burned, torn to pieces, filled with projectiles, poisoned, or killed with spells. I cant recommend this game enough if you enjoy the fantasy and dungeon crawling genre, as well as difficult but rewarding combat and puzzles. I believe it is even more daunting and difficult than the fromsoftware games and much less straightforward. Believe me I've played all of soulsbourne. This game doesn't let you over level, it doesn't even have a leveling system, at best it does spam save points but they can disappear when you enter new areas unlike bonfires and they don't heal you or replenish your elixirs. The only thing is you have to be up for the challenge of braving and enduring the gauntlet that is Deathtrap Dungeon.
Sword and sorcery Tomb Raider. Is it bad? Kinda, but in a funny way. If you manage to get through the terrible controls, it has some laugh and giggles.
Getting this anywhere near playable is the true Deathtrap Dungeon experience.
If you don't learn the controls that the game tells some to you, but not all, playing this game is like getting attacked nonstop by every single enemy because the developers thought that pitbulls attacking nonstop no matter what, are "badass". The default controls are designed for an octopus not humans, so you will have to change those as soon as you can. On the second level, the circus (fitting name), the game will spam an enemy type that takes a lot of hits to kill with the starter weapon, but are easier to kill with the weapon found on that level. The problem here is that the game doesn't tell you how to switch weapons in the menu where you can change the controls. This leads to the enemies attacking nonstop while being hard to kill, they can even hit you while you try to stun lock them. If you don't non stop attack them before they do it to you, you will probably be hit anyway, since the enemies like to constantly attack even when you are not even close to them. For whatever reason, the controls for selecting weapons, items and spells are F1, F2 and F3. Dev 1: "Which buttons shall we choose to allow the player to choose weapons, items and spells? Should it be 1, 2 and 3?" Dev 2: "NO!!! It should be F1!!!, F2!!! and F3!!! There should be no option to change this either!!!" Once you know all the controls, you might start having fun, but the game likes to throw cheap tricks at you, like spawning enemies off camera close to you, because this game has camera angles. You may get stuck behind doors since the game has tank controls, which makes hitting enemies annoying, especially with the limited spells you have to find. There are also traps that randomly spawn behind walls you have to open plus traps that you fall into. Enemies will spawn in rooms you have just been in too. You have multiple save slots so you can beat the game through trial and error in a worse case scenario, which is what I am going to do, lol.
One of the greatest games of all time, oh what i would give for a modern remake / continuation of this.
