This game, and 'shoot them ups' in general, surprised me as a newcomer to the genre. It does not waste your time because after you press that start button you're put right into the action so you don't have to worry about going through any stupid, long and unskippable introduction segments or walking sections. It's a very fun game and I haven't played that many 'shoot them up' games in my lifetime. A heads-up, I'm not an expert in this genre so I don't know what's good input lag, slowdown or whatever is expected to be included in re-released games because this is not originally a PC game. All I know is that I think it's fun.
This one is a mixed bag. If you already own the original "Deathsmiles" (which is still available on Steam) I lean towards skipping this one because while it does have the Mega Black Label version, you're buying the same game again and the graphics aren't as good (it doesn't fill up the whole screen or even most of it). If you DO NOT have the other one, get this one, however having to then pay another $25 to unlock additional characters to play as is a ripoff. If you want to buy this one, wait for a good sale and look at the bundle to get a discount (I don't have the soundtrack so no comments on that). This is good but could have been better and is also way overpriced at, to get the game and DLC, roughly $65. Love the developer and want to support them but this one is asking too much.

Im delightfully reminded of CAVES genius game design after paying 30 bucks for a dlc and being punished for using souflee (windia's shot AND option on crack AND the best outfit in the game) by having to hear her Truly eargrating death cries over and over and over while practicing Death mode hades castle. This is natural balance at its finest love it!!! Real throwback to MushiFutari palm.. (My experience is based on everything but 1.1, i really dislike the streamlined option controls. Its what makes the game really stand out to me) This games strengths and weaknesses are well known by all at this point.. even with its level selection and scoring mechanics being a bit obtuse at first, after many years I stopped messing around and got a quick clear. Even with a technically unoptimal stage order it was pretty calm. Some may not like how backloaded it is in it's difficulty, but ive found its the most extreme in All level 3 runs, even despite suicide bullets appearing at the last 2 stages before gorge and hades castle, they may as well not exist if youre even somewhat competent with controlling and routing your option.\ But death mode stages.. my goodness I am Not joking every night after i practice either stage i see suicide bullets in mywaking dreams From a survival standpoint i do wish the insane difficulty of the last 2 stages on all lvl3 mode was spread out a little more, but regardless theyre some of the most bewildering stages ive ever attempted to route myself. It's so brilliantly challenging trying to maintain consistency when every moment a stray suicide bulet could fly past your option or sneak up on you from behind. Option control in general with it being inverted to your own movement is SUUUUUCH a fun skill to refine and it's mostly whats kept me playing despite how barebones the training options are. It really sucks seriously.. gorge and hades castle are so long and such a step up in intensity and it really hurts not having an option to start from halfway to train.................. and also F you most especially for the lack of a boss select. Luckily jitterbug and the TLB are more the final stretch after an evil suicide filled gauntlet of danmaku but its still really stupid to not include an option for it. Hopefully one day i can get the 1cc with the EX stage. For now its just the easier all lv3 route. Anyways its awesome play it and give cave all of your money because i want many many many more of thier gam,es to get official pc ports. I just got the lv3 1cc. Absolutely crushed it but i hate this game. No achievement and couldnt save a replay because i started the run by resetting stage 1. Tragic
Deathsmiles is always a delight to come back to! May be one of the easiest shmups that CAVE has made, but "difficulty selection" per stage and extra optional stages allow you to go as crazy as you want to go, and the scoring system allows for creative solutions on how to keep improving your score over and over (although not personally fond of having to perfectly time refills after power-up mode ends to score optimally). On top of this, the game has a very cool soundtrack, an actually interesting story (yes, I said it), many alternative modes to play in, and comes with the (somewhat polarizing) sequel all in one package! I only wished the games did more to explain their scoring systems for all its modes without us having to resort to external resources. Also, if you're interested only in the first game, this is also available separately on Steam by a different publisher as of this writing (although I prefer the port included here). All in all, love it, recommend it!
$40 for a 20 minute game and well worth it
This game makes me feel magical!*~-..
lei is the cutest femboy ever its insane
Deathsmiles 2 has cutscenes where the volume disregards all in game settings AND the game's volume slider in Windows??? Great work, devs. Appreciate it. Only way I can see fixing this is by taking the WEBM files (yes, they're saved as WEBM in the game files) and editing them in davinci. What a joke.
