Great tactical grid-based deckbuilder.
This is an incredible game that touches on so many facets of what it feels like to lose what you love. Whether it's a loved one, a dream, or even the loss of our own identity, the game handles the theme of loss in a masterful way—I loved every second of the text I read. The soundtrack was also on another level, complementing every moment perfectly, whether in combat or exploration. As for the gameplay, I also had a great time. It was challenging but never frustrating. There were several times I lost, but the solution was always within my reach. Once I realized I didn't have to rely on just one combination of cards, but rather make small adjustments to my strategy depending on the situation, enemies, or the board, I came to see that every card was equally important—not to mention incredibly satisfying as well.
I don't typically play deckbuilders but I was very intrigued by the trailer so I checked out the demo and liked it enough to get the game on release. I was not prepared for the emotional rollercoaster that comes with this game. I always feel like a game will speak to me through its character design and soundtrack, and this game does a fantastic job with both. The soundtrack is one of my favorite parts of the game and it is tailored very well to the gameplay. The game definitely represents a learning curve and is quite difficult at first. The game does not let you brute force any encounters and there are no truly broken combos, you must learn how to use movement effectively, maximize your actions, and devise strategies to make your area-specific cards shine while countering the strengths of area-specific enemies. The elite enemies throughout the regions prepare very well for the bossfights which I found all to be very thrilling fights. All around an excellent experience even for someone who usually doesn't play deckbuilders as the ambience, story, and mechanics combine to make a very compelling experience.
A great indie tactial deckbuilder game. Love the different cards how they function and the synergies. Also how each region plays differently. Love the enemies, you need to have a seperate ways in defeating them. Art style is very unique. Also love the bossess, changing your tactics and which cards you bring to the fight. Also don't forget the totems that changes your battles as well. Overall this is such a fun game for people who wants another Slay the Spire type game.
While I can recommend Death Howl on the merits of its challenging but rewarding deckbuilding and strategic gameplay alone, I feel that the biggest draw of this title, at least for me, is its story. I lost my brother in 2017, and when I first saw this game and tried out its demo, I immediately drew parallels between Ro's determination to bring back her son, Olvi, and the grief and similar sentiments of my own mother. I was emotionally moved by Ro's journey through the spirit realm. That's gotta be pretty difficult for a deckbuilder to pull off, I imagine. Especially for a game that can, at times, be punishing and unforgiving. But it works surprisingly well, with Ro's struggles acting as a vehicle, motivating you as the player to endure in order to help reunite her with Olvi. Ultimately, Death Howl resonated so strongly with me that its ending brought me to tears. Grief is a powerful emotion, one that can easily consume us if we let it. Death Howl's thoughtfulness and sincere regard for that in its story surprised me in the best way. It's because of that thoughtfulness that its impression will be a lasting one.
Incredible game. Story was great which is one thing but the the entire concept of a non-roguelite/like deckbuilder is so foreign to game devs these days, it's a breath of fresh air. Power progression is good and the moment to moment gameplay is like a mix of into the breach and slay the spire, silky smooth. Would recommend to anyone.
Very good.
