Dear Esther, I finally got around to playing your game. It was a pretty middle-of-the-road experience. I'm sorry to say that, but it's true. The game felt more like an amusement park ride where... not much actually happens. Okay, things do happen, but I just couldn't connect with your British narrator. He reads the lines more like an audiobook than someone reminiscing about his maybe-dead partner. It might work for some people, but it just didn't work for me. I have to say, Esther, your story was fun to think about. The environments definitely tell a story, and they're clearly open to interpretation. I just think parts of it became a little too confusing without making me want to figure out what everything meant. Once I found out what happened to you, I kind of thought, "Does the rest of this even really matter?" If the narration never really worked for me, then why didn't I just turn it off? I guess because your environments really dazzled me. That's what you've got going for you, Esther: some absolutely beautiful landscapes and music that works for the most part... except for one scene where I honestly just wanted to turn it off. So this is where I say goodbye, Esther. Even though I didn't really love you, I didn't hate you either. The fact that your journey is so short, combined with how gorgeous the cave section is, makes me think you're still worth checking out. Sincerely, A traveler
There's not much to do other than move forward, listen, and let the island slowly explain itself. It's up to you whether that sounds relaxing or boring. The narration starts scattered, then slowly gathers into themes of grief, memory, and isolation. The slow pace is peaceful, but it also makes dead ends and missed paths feel tedious. Even so, the environments and sound design create a place worth wandering through. Best saved for a rainy day when you wish you could go for a walk.
Great writing and voice acting, but incredibly tedious, unrewarding experience definitely not worth the full asking price. Movement is mind-numbingly slow, even for walking sim standards, and there is no interactivity such as objects to inspect or even minor puzzle elements, as a result the tags on the steam page are misleading/outright false advertising. It's just a monotonous, linear slog that's only saving grace is the gorgeous environments.
This game is unfathomably gorgeous, and the story is definitely something, but this movement speed is horrific. I understand it was done as an artistic choice to allow the narrative to sink in, and make the player feel immersed and one with the environment, but the graphics and narrative do enough to slow down and pace the player. Forcing you to move slower than a glacier feels more like the developers spitting on you and telling you it's raining. Feeling like you're missing out on exploration for not exploring other trails, and then being forced to slowly glide through them at a snails pace, and then slowly glide back, was not an enjoyable experience
Atmosphere phenomenal, narration haunting, island beautiful. The only thing this game is missing is an ak-47, extended mag, w/ hollow point ammo locked and loaded, safety off. Hopefully next patch
