«Darkest Depths»
Darkest Depths is a brave project in the FPS rogue-like category, the untamed genre in modern gaming, which deserves as much attention as it can get, especially with mechanics that can make it stand out.

This key was provided by my dear friends at IndieGems . Follow their curator page if you want to see more reviews like this one.
Being an old school FPS player that grew up with games like Quake I can tell you that for sure it's inspired by those, but does it carry the true weight? Not really - of course it has its modern touches, which on the other hand can be beneficial and bring far more versatility in such a complex genre if done right. Darkest Depths is a project that's being developed by a single developer and this didn't change the fact that I tested numerous iterations, fixes, and changes during the past month - all of them improving the game significantly. This true dedication is what you need to expect from every EA game project out there.
Gameplay and Mechanics
Darkest Depths is randomly generated First Person Shooter, done in the Rogue-like fashion by weapon unlocks and RPG upgrades during your runs. As expected from such kind of mix, if you die you have to start from the top and the only way to improve your progress is by utilizing "Practice makes perfect" or "Git gud" if you will and there is no way around trying over and over to improve your gameplay. One particular sub-genre that isn't mentioned in the description and makes a really strong impression is Bullet Hell . This is probably the first word I would use to describe the game in its current state. You are given a crazy amount of evasive mechanics from the get-go you have to take advantage of avoiding the various enemy attacks. You start with a Double Jump, air dash (costs energy, which you replace by shooting and killing enemies), wall running and a Slowdown Time mechanic (tied to killing enemies in quick succession - combos). Mastering and chaining all of those together in the best way possible is a fun experience that keeps the combat fresh and as expected keeps you alive for longer. The Rogue-like aspects comes from the permadeath and the ability to unlock new guns - about 6-7 currently. You start your playthrough with one extra gun on top of your starting one and to permanently unlock more you have to progress in the game or get them from drops or the RNG shops. Each gun has alternate fire mode and most of them consume your energy bar for ammo. Your extra weapon in the starting hub will be decided from the ones you have unlocked, but when you get more during the playthrough you can keep them all and cycle through them on your whim. Stat buffs/debuffs and leveling up are in the core of the RPG elements the game provides currently. You can obtain those from either RNG enemy drops or the shops that utilize your in-game currency. Gaining health back is done again by enemy kill drops in the form of healing orbs. The enemies are varied for such an EA release and most of them have melee attacks as well, which even further strengthens the need to utilize your evasive mechanics to keep your distance as much as possible. Each floor ends up in a big boss fight, which underlines the bullet hell experience and I've seen 3 or 4 so far.
Controls
I play all FPS games with M+K, so I haven't tried the game with a controller. I'm not sure if it's supported yet. I'm a slow mouse sensitivity player with around 25 cm for 180 degree turns and I'm at 5% of the sensitivity slider, so I would suggest a bit bigger variety in that setting for players like me. Another thing here I would like to see is individual weapon bindings because currently, you can only cycle up and down, which is not optimal when I require a particular gun in a particular situation.
Graphics and Design
It's UE so the graphics are really pleasant and you even have different graphic presets - around 6-7 currently that allows you to change the looks and the game atmosphere on the fly - if you want to make it look old school as possible with bright colors and black outline this got you covered. The enemies are really distinct from each other, so you always know what to expect when you get familiar with them. They are decently animated and designed. Obliterating them with your various weaponry feels satisfying enough especially with the gory blood animation that was added in. Currently, one of the primary goals of the developer are to make the different floors unique and distinct and floor 2 design was revealed with the EA start, so I can't wait to see what more he can come up with.
Sound and Music
The sound effects are decent enough, but they might need to get some more love eventually, especially your and enemy firing. The music is pretty good and most of the time works really well except for kinda the slow tunes that sometimes kicks in while you are flying around a room trying to melt down 30 enemies, but that's personal opinion.
Options
Plenty of graphics option, individual sound sliders, and key bindings. It's possible to use a multi-monitor set up as well, by switching the game to windowed mode > moving it to the screen you want > getting back to Fullscreen.
Early Access State and Expectations
It's a long road ahead and plenty of stuff to be ironed out. Bugs, fixes, balance changes, and improvements are bound to happen, so don't hesitate to provide feedback. During the closed testing, I had conversations with the Dev and he was really easy to talk to - considering and working on plenty of suggestions that stay true with what he is trying to achieve with this hard project. You shouldn't forget about prioritization involved in such an endeavor. After the current work on different levels/floors variety, a different kind of rooms or levels is promised to see its return eventually - movement based ones. They are set to be in the game to allow you to utilize even more the movement mechanics. I personally can't wait for their refined version.
Pricing
The price of 8.19 Euros or your equivalent is pretty decent, based on the work being done to the game.
Conclusion
Darkest Depths is a tough game combining tough genres with tons of potential and if done right can get really successful. I can't wait to see it improved to find out what more it can bring to the FPS table. It's in Early Access, so a lot of work needs to be done by its single dev, but from what I can see and the feedback exchange, it can go only up from here. Pros

Great mix of gaming genres
Dedicated and easy to reach developer
Complex variety of movement mechanics
Suitable for short sittings
Cons
Plenty of improvements required for the full experience
No steam cards or achievements
I received the product for free. I did not receive any compensation to write this review. The opinions represented here are entirely my own and were not influenced in any way.
Feels like early access done right. I buy a lot of bad FPS's on Steam but DD seems like it has a foundation and an achievable plan. I'm not a fan of random rogue rooms, but jumping and wall-running around like Titanfall with overpowered weapons is good stress relief.
Quake 3 + Doom 3 Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQdkca35Z9A
A really fun arena style shooter in the same vein as Doom. Bright explosions and dark corridors filled to the brim with baddies waiting to be killed. The developer is keen to improve the game. Overall, a really solid experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWmBh3tX2Jw
A very solid (and fun) Devil Daggers meets roguelike arena shooter. Controls are fast and you have abilities such as wall running and each weapon feels distinct and is fun to experiment with. Changeable filters before each run, allowing you to make the game look great in a variety of different aesthetics. So far so good, will keep checking back as development continues. https://youtu.be/ggUkxohMdsQ
I'm a big fan of the FPS roguelike genre. So far this one plays like Painkiller but with fancier movement options, and Painkiller is one of my favourite FPS games of all time. There are also elements of something like Monolith in this, where the rooms are a fairly standard size and you have unlimited primary ammo. You can get pickups for more jumps, bonus xp, bonus energy, lower and higher difficulty, its pretty cool. I've not seen all the guns yet but those I've picked up feel good and impactful, even the starting pistol. The way you move in this feels very good and very old-skool, like it reminds me of doing huge leaps in Quake 3 or one of the low grav maps with all the jump pads in Unreal Tournament. Its good that a game in a very modern genre has that classic feel. The music is very active techno type music, which complements the action well and enhances the old skool feel. Its quite early in development at this point so the environments and menus can be simplistic in places, but I think that the core of the gameplay is solid and good-feeling enough that the future of this game is promising. I think its worth buying to support a solo dev, but if you want a more polished product, maybe wait a bit.
If you love roguelike shooters and Serious Sam/Quake-like gameplay, albeit with even more gore, then you'll want to give Darkest Depths a try. The game can be pretty intense, especially the boss fights, but if you play it cleverly and you are constantly vigilant of any enemy shooting at you from afar, you should be able to survive quite a lot of levels, level up pretty quickly and earn some coins to buy unlock shrines that may house some super cool weapons!
Watch me play!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p0nQUHMhtU
Pros
+ If you like games with gruesome and gory creatures, Darkest Depths is incredibly good at this - That "heart" boss is a thing of nightmares! + Pretty fast-paced gameplay that will keep you on your toes. Plus, some enemies, mainly the orb thingy, can hit really hard and you may end up dying a lot if you don't kill them first= some strategy are needed as opposed to mindlessly shooting monsters. Thankfully, these orb thingies die pretty easily. + Roguelike (if you enjoy that sort of thing) + Lots of weapons with different "abilities". Two types of firing styles (usually) per weapon too. The energy-based system to regulate the use of powerful alt-abilities works well here. + You can choose the graphic styles you like :) + Insane boss fights!
Meh
* "Loot" like XP orbs will disappear after a while. So, you'll not only need to avoid getting killed but also to pick up your loot as you go. * Randomly assigned rooms. I don't think these rooms are procedurally-generated because I've encountered the exact same room a couple of times in my playthrough. The number of rooms available in this game seems rather limited as well. It's okay for an EA but I still think more variety is needed.
Cons/ Suggestions
- For some reason, I can't seem to get my character to wall-run when I jump towards a wall and hold down the Spacebar key. I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong but I have no idea what. Maybe you could add in the wall-run part in the tutorial and put in a more detailed step-by-step? - If you play the game "cleverly" 😉, you can basically shoot at a boss while squirreled away in relatively safe place. I've also noticed that you can return to the previous room after entering a new one so you can use that door as a "shield" if needed. In fact, you can stand at the doorway and just fire at the nests without so much as triggering any enemy spawns. I guess this is kind of like an exploit since the game is likely not designed to be played this way :P Just take a look at my gameplay :) - I killed a boss called Bombardier but it didn't drop any loot. Is that a bug?
Overall
Darkest Depths definitely delivers what it promised - a gore-filled shooting-fest that's fast-paced, challenging and roguelike. However, there are still some room for improvement, like designing more variety of rooms as I keep encountering the same ones, and maybe add in a more interactive tutorial to show newb players like me how to properly wall-run. For a TL:DR its in the spoiler >>>>>
An actual early access game thats good! A few minor bugs, But its early access.
Having played this early access game for a few hours I've made a solid decision on what I feel. I'll edit my review as I play more. Darkest depths is being developed with a solo developer crafting everything from the ground up it seems. The game is the very epitome of a promising and practical game within its genre (But not without its bugs which I'll cover).
What is it?
Darkest depths is a fast paced rogue-lite first person shooter that captures the random generation of gold, guns and monsters which elevate you through five floors with bosses in between. The monsters may drop three things. The first is health which is self explanatory. The second is gold which works for both unlocking chests within the level for guns/benefits and for your "Lifetime gold" score which unlocks new weapons for the start of your run. If you kill monsters in quick succession without getting hit will earn combos which increase the amount of gold dropping. You start with a pistol at the start of every run which feels good and not as a throwaway weapon. Every weapon has an alternate fire that is incredibly powerful but uses "Energy" which is built up from your primary fire or pistol. There is also a slow motion bulletime option if you perform a high combo. Thats the very basic explanation of the mechanics, Its incredibly satisfying and responsive to play.
What are the highlights/quirks about Darkest Depths that sets it apart?

You can change the visual effects "theme" in the starting hub, My screenies might explain better.
Overpowered feel to weapons, but balanced for the game.
Randomised progression for every run (Modifiers such as extra dmg, Health regen) and levelling up.
Long term Progression developed through total gold you earn.
Incredibly fast movement, Jumping and "Air dashing" in midair. You can also wallrun.
The solo developer is incredibly responsive and open to feedback.

Bugs and future features
There are some features that are yet to be implemented (Controller supports on the horizon, Audio sliders, Endless mode and more) but it appears to be reachable. Some bugs are evident in the game but the developer has been updating it almost daily through the community feedback.
Verdict?
Im normally skeptical of early access games, but this game has serious promise/potential and a commitment to deliver by a single passionate developer. This game in my eyes has already shown how successful it can be with whats already available to play. If your into the first person roguelite games, Get it. You'll enjoy the existing content and whats planned to come.
Definitely get this game during the summer sale because it is a very good first-person shooter. Runs real smooth, enemies are challenging, maps are randomly generated and it is fun. More fun than devil Daggersl Game was created by one guy. Amazing work 9/10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1os_Vb4OFw Pros: - Violent gore - Fast-paced FPS - Fun - Runs real smooth Cons: - Not much of a story. - Cartoonesque look (can be a pro or con depends if you like borderlands).
