A retro shooter inspired by classics like Wolfenstein and Doom. Think of it as a tribute, a love letter to the games that defined a generation, with a few modern touches of my own. It’s tough, fast, and demands skill, just the way those old-school shooters did.
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. Copies below reflect the player base, not paid sales.

About
Step into the chaos of Darkenstein 3D, a bullet-dodging retro FPS set deep behind enemy lines.
Inspired by the brutal pace of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the glory days of late 90s shooters, this game blends secrets, explosive physics, and a story driven by desperation… and a dog.
You play as the Hobo Guy: a furious American drifter lost in enemy territory, armed with nothing but a shotgun and pure vengeance. It’s 1940s Germany, and though you’re outnumbered and outgunned, you won’t back down. This isn’t about justice, it’s personal!
Gunther, your loyal companion, was taken during a Nazi raid. Now he’s locked away deep inside enemy fortresses. To get him back, you’ll need to push your limits through an uphill battle against the Axis forces. Along the way, you’ll uncover alien secrets, strange powers, and hidden horrors in a world crumbling under war.
Fast, brutal, skill-based. Darkenstein 3D doesn’t hold your hand. Enemy projectiles can be dodged, but survival requires sharp movement, precise aim, and quick thinking. Every battle is a deadly dance of strafes and corners. No cover mechanics, no aim assist, just raw gunplay.
Take on 13 handcrafted levels that steadily raise the stakes. Explore castles, caves, valleys, and desert towns. Unlock doors with hidden keys, discover secrets, hunt for treasure, and push your score higher and higher.
You won’t fight alone. A vicious rat companion joins the bloodbath, lunging at enemies and sowing chaos in close quarters. Combine him with grenades and mines for maximum destruction. He’s small, angry, and always hungry.
Explosive gore, ragdoll physics, and debris-filled firefights: every shot feels heavy, and every kill looks painful. Enemies fly, gib, and collapse in glorious carnage as the battlefield crumbles around you.
No microtransactions. No battle passes. No currencies. Just one complete, standalone retro FPS the way it used to be.
Built over four years by a single developer, Darkenstein 3D is a passion project turned full campaign. It’s hard, it’s funny, it’s handcrafted, and it’s packed with hours of replayable carnage.

ok
This is a fun old school style shooter that lets you kill tons of Nazis in fun ways much like the games that inspired it, namely Wolfenstein 3D and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. It's pretty solidly built and I really enjoyed myself for most of the game. It's fast paced, the guns are pretty solid, the enemies are (mostly) fun to take on. It is very well designed. I had a great time with it. That said, there are some issues. 1. Checkpoints. They only kind of work. They work perfectly for respawning when you die. I had issues every time I tried to reload a checkpoint, losing a considerable amount of progress in the level. This seemed to only happen if I quit the game and reloaded later. If you play this, only quit at the beginning of new levels. 2. Broken weapons. Some weapons just stopped working halfway through a level and would only fire again when I moved onto the next level. It was always the lightning based weapons. Maybe this is a feature that I don't understand, but I'm going to assume it's a bug. 3. Game can break. This is the big one. I got to the final level, then had to quit for a few hours. I loaded up the game....and my campaign was reset to the very first level. I still had all my stats like my increased health and whatnot, but I lost all of my progress. I was this close to beating the game, and now I either play through the entire campaign again or quit. I think I'm just gonna quit. I still recommend this game; it's very fun and well designed for the most part. Just know what you're getting into. THe game still has a number of bugs, and I happened to get one that entirely broke my playthrough, which really sucks. I was having a great time up to that point, so I guess it doesn't really matter whether I beat the last level or not. Were it not for that, this would easily be a game that I would happily spend anywhere between five and fifteen bucks. That said, if I spent money on this game and ran into these issues, I'd be pretty annoyed. Considering that it's free, I say it's worth a try. If nothing else, it might tickle your nostalgia for a while. Just know that you might run into some issues during your playthrough. Don't play it if you're not wanting to risk that. Edit: I finally managed to load my campaign. I restarted the game more than once, hit continue more than once; nothing worked. Finally started a game, hit load checkpoint inside the menu while in the new game, and that transported me back to the end, though it put me in the previous level and I lost about ten to fifteen minutes progress. At least I was able to beat it!
