A retro shooter inspired by classics like Wolfenstein and Doom. Think of it as a tribute, a love letter to the games that defined a generation, with a few modern touches of my own. It’s tough, fast, and demands skill, just the way those old-school shooters did.

About
Step into the chaos of Darkenstein 3D, a bullet-dodging retro FPS set deep behind enemy lines.
Inspired by the brutal pace of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the glory days of late 90s shooters, this game blends secrets, explosive physics, and a story driven by desperation… and a dog.
You play as the Hobo Guy: a furious American drifter lost in enemy territory, armed with nothing but a shotgun and pure vengeance. It’s 1940s Germany, and though you’re outnumbered and outgunned, you won’t back down. This isn’t about justice, it’s personal!
Gunther, your loyal companion, was taken during a Nazi raid. Now he’s locked away deep inside enemy fortresses. To get him back, you’ll need to push your limits through an uphill battle against the Axis forces. Along the way, you’ll uncover alien secrets, strange powers, and hidden horrors in a world crumbling under war.
Fast, brutal, skill-based. Darkenstein 3D doesn’t hold your hand. Enemy projectiles can be dodged, but survival requires sharp movement, precise aim, and quick thinking. Every battle is a deadly dance of strafes and corners. No cover mechanics, no aim assist, just raw gunplay.
Take on 13 handcrafted levels that steadily raise the stakes. Explore castles, caves, valleys, and desert towns. Unlock doors with hidden keys, discover secrets, hunt for treasure, and push your score higher and higher.
You won’t fight alone. A vicious rat companion joins the bloodbath, lunging at enemies and sowing chaos in close quarters. Combine him with grenades and mines for maximum destruction. He’s small, angry, and always hungry.
Explosive gore, ragdoll physics, and debris-filled firefights: every shot feels heavy, and every kill looks painful. Enemies fly, gib, and collapse in glorious carnage as the battlefield crumbles around you.
No microtransactions. No battle passes. No currencies. Just one complete, standalone retro FPS the way it used to be.
Built over four years by a single developer, Darkenstein 3D is a passion project turned full campaign. It’s hard, it’s funny, it’s handcrafted, and it’s packed with hours of replayable carnage.

its a great game free has a good story and great gunplay obviously its not perfect but i liked it and for free you cant complain overall id say they could of charged 10 to 20$ for it if they wanted to 9/10 p.s. i particularly liked the mouse
Well damn, this is good ! Did not expect such a long and solid campaign, as well as this much content, from a free 1-man-team game ! Sure it has a few rough edges here and there but it really is a fun and well-made game. The worst part would be the optimization which is of questionable quality at times, given the big slow downs. Perhaps it was only on my end, but despite having what can be described as a good computer, i experienced quite a few frame drops throughout the whole campaign. Nothing game-breaking of course, but still weird for a Unity game which looks great but is low-poly. Minor issues would include some audio balancing problems with some enemies, such as the women soldiers being way too loud compared to the other enemies, some physics issues where you get launched in the air from stepping on something, and a few spots with static props where you can get almost stuck behind them, from the lack of a jump button. Congratulations to the dev and everyone involve in the making of this game, it really is a great one and I easily recommend it if you're looking for an old-school shooter inspired by Wolfenstein 3D/RtCW, or even just a simpler shooter ! I mean, killing nzis never gets old after all.
Impressive! Somehow this game manages to capture what it stated it was designed around. Classic FPS shooters (AKA Boomer Shooters!). The game intensifies as you progress. Even playing on Normal Mode, posed a challenge at later levels, especially the boss fights which have a slight learning curve to them. The graphics for what it is are not that bad.. as a matter of fact, they're on par with many more recent shooters of this genre. The level design is beautiful and not overly complicated. The sound effects are on par for what they should be and the sound track is downright awesome! Overall the gameplay is immersive and fun, encouraging players to keep exploring the vast world and ridding the Nazi regime back to where they belong. I strongly suggest this as a buy as I don't think we'll see another game of this caliber for a long time.
This game is free, you pay £0. However, it needs optimized, rather badly. No reason it should run the way it's running. The lighting in also somewhat annoying, not Resident Evil. For me personally, come back to it, hopefully it improved, but I wouldn't recommend it to "me", in its current state. It's free, so why are you even reading this? Try it for yourself.
