The people that recommended this game must be masochists that enjoy terribly designed repeating-pseudo-random-maps, one dimensional skill sets, counterintuitive skill upgrading/selection, forced consumable item hoarding due to early and CONSTANT poisoning, unreasonable difficulty curves, LAZY DIOLOGUE, canned lore, LEVEL GRINDING, and a $15 MSRP to boot. To put it simply... This game has less depth and refinement than many FREE community projects, from the official RPG Maker Forums. Please understand, I am not normally this brutal with my RMVXA reviews and I genuinely TRIED to give this game a good run with around 2 hours of my life (I want back), but this game reeks of a want-a-be artist that couldn't get hired to make a real game so they tried to make their own, and did so... BADLY. And WTF is with obscuring half the battle scene with actor busts during skill selection?!? *BOGGLE* (No those screen shots are NOT battle conversation artwork, but appear EVERY SINGLE BATTLE) If I could, I'd ask for a refund. I truly feel sorry for anyone that paid the MSRP, as I feel cheated having bought it at a deep discount. For the record, I apologize for my tone. But it needed to be said.
I own about 300 games, of which 30+ of them are RPG Maker games. I happen to like the RPG Maker genre. DarkEnd is among the very best RPG Maker games that I have played. I spend more than 100+ hours playing this game, and enjoyed it tremendously, and that is why I decide to write a review of DarkEnd to share my experiences. In DarkEnd you can play as one of 4 different Primary Characters, and each of these 4 character has a very unique and intriguing storyline. You can also select a Secondary Character from the remaining 3 characters. The storyline is quite complex and convoluted and you normally would not know who is good or bad until the very end. Each of the character has their own unique reasons to go into the DarkEnd, and the outcome is also different and unique. Playing this game is like reading a detective novel for me, and each stage of the game give me a better glimpse of the story. There is also a lot of replayability because when you finished the game, you can play NG+ and select a different starting character. All the items and gold get carried forward to the next game, but all the quests resets. I like this system very much. There are also lots of optional side quests, and optional dungeons that spawn randomly too. On the negative side, there are some minor gramatical and syntactic errors. However, I personally not mind these errors, and did overlook them because I like the stories, the plot twists and the interesting game play. I had a good time playing DarkEnd and for me, its worth the money spent. I love this game and would highly recommend it.
For about 4 dollars I'd say it was worth it, there was times when it was a challenge (in a good way) and times when it was just 'I'm bored, I should play pokemon this is so bad'. The side quests were hard to do due to the low drop chances (or my horrible luck) and the random generating was so random i found the fairy 10 times and the cave once before giving up. I'll give the story a 6 out of ten, but i played as griselda and was confused until I hit the end of the dark dimension. I like some curious plot twists but I got a little lost there. In the description even it said something about a love story. I didn't see it at all besides the weird flash backs about someone who wasn't even my MC. For 4 bucks if your bored enough to waste 7 some odd hours like I did, I recommend it (Kinda). But for something to play over again to see it through the other characters stories? Nope.
First off, i wanted to try out this game to see how it is. Sadly, i did not find the game that good. First off, i will post my pro's for this game: ONE OTHER NOTE: This is a rpg-maker game. These don't bother me, but if they bother you, the reader, feel free to pass on this game. Graphic style also does not bother me. Also, i was not paid to make an review. I don't believe in that method either. Even if i was given a free one, i would use my unbiased review to either give it positive or negative. PRO: `Interesting way to gain abilities. You press "A" and you get teleported to a map full of poweres in crystals. `Crystals and boss killing remind me of FF games (early ones). `4 different characters with 4 different storylines. You can also choose a companion with each. Make sure to select one that is good for that character class. `There are some storylines after you kill a boss, which is background info on the character your playing as. `Helpful developer if you email them. `New Game + mode. CON's: `Questing becomes repetitive, especially the girl with dream quests to hunt lucky mouses. `Even though dungeon is somewhat randomized, you go thru it so many times to try to finish quests, it gets boring. `lucky mouse quests....do i need to say more? `a bit of laggy, but still playable on windows 10. ` $15.00 for a mediocre game is quite expensive for what it is. Buy on sale only! NOTE: This game only contains pre-made characters. You cannot make your own. Some people will see this as a con of the game . It does not really bother me, but i do like flexibility of character creation. I removed it because it does not bother me and did it when chatting to a friend. OVERALL IMPRESSION: Mediocre. Ive played worse games that don't even work on windows 10. I played beter ones too...don't expect a triple A game, but don't expect an unplayable game either. My personal opinion: Neutral. Mostly this is due to the quest issues i am having in a game. , and some quests are very hard to finish, especially the mouse ones. I would use a neutral setting for this game, but due to not having any, i will leave at negative due to hard quests, like the mouse ones.
Unskippable cutscenes, unskippable tutorial screens, default RPG Maker menus, tile-based character movement, no saving at start of game, no obvious way to progress the story after you get past the initial cutscene and dialogue (have to talk to all the NPCs before it will let you continue), very bad character art. Nice to see some dynamic lighting/shadow effects, even if it's not adding any element of surprise nor exploration, but I believe that's a common visual effect that the entire RPG Maker community had access to for years. The story is a little more dynamic than the usual RPG Maker fare but that does not mean it's different enough with each playthrough to warrant more than one go of it. I would never buy this game for any price, let alone the $15 the developer is asking for. The only reason I even gave it a try was I got it from a bundle at some point. Don't waste your time or your money on this.
I’ve played and beaten the non-steam version of this game a while ago. Overall a solid RPG. Recommend it for people who like to enjoy the challenging turnbased RPGs. DarkEnd is somewhat similar to the instant-classic Etarian Odyssey series. Light on story but rather focused on gameplay. The battles are really harsh for unprepared party and could get wiped easily by simple blunder. What I really like about this game is the boss battles. Most RPG maker RPGs I have played have rather simple boss battles. The bosses are only just stronger. All you need to do is use your strongest skills and heal when it is needed. It is not so simple in DarkEnd. Each and every boss, except the first one, has a catch and require special tactic to beat them. Since every spell and skill have cooldown and warm up timer, you have to think carefully which skill to be used at which moment. Spamming the strongest spell/skill without any strategy will only get yourself killed in DarkEnd. Optional bosses are also very challenging. Since you cannot save in the dungeon, it can be a really tensed situation when you try to challenge a rare optional boss in the randomly appeared sub-level. I wish the developers should give the game some achievements to make challenging boss battles even more worthwhile. The story is nothing revolutionary. There are some interesting plot twists and lore which will be revealed late in game, but the story itself is pretty simple. The characters are well developed, especially Griselda and Lucion. However, the localization is a real let down in this game. Even as a second language user myself, I found some dialogues in game very cheesy and ridden with awkward grammar. Graphically, the game exactly of what you can expect of RPG maker games out there. I noticed the game used the stocked RTP materials mixed with some custom work. The pixel sprites are neat and colorful and some scenes in game are simple beautiful. The characters’ portrait arts are nice too. Verdict : Have you ever played any of Etarian Series? Do you like them? Do you like very challenging RPG? If your answer is a “Yes”, buy this (at least at the discount period) and you will enjoy this difficult but very rewarding RPG experience. A solid 7/10 game.
RPG Maker bundle I guess... Play only if you have enough free time and you already finished all of the games from your library.

This review has been brought to you by A Curator in the Making. If you’re interested in games made on RPG Maker feel free to check out our curator (we will love it if you follow it too ^^).
Darkend is one of those games that I wish it was possible to give it a neutral option because the game itself is not bad enough to flat out not recommend it, and you can tell there was a lot of work in its technical aspects. I liked the skill-learning system implemented in the game, which lets you use your skill points in any skill of your choice (as long as your level is high enough). Another thing I liked was the optional Milestone Levelling system. It saves you from grinding mindlessly, and it’s especially useful when trying to unlock certain achievements or playing the game in its hardest difficulty. Some people find the art to be bad but I’m more neutral about it. Sure, it’s quite amateurish and it could have been better but it’s not as bad as some people make it out to be. Why am I giving it a thumbs down then? Because this game failed where no game should ever fail; at being entertaining. Darkend is quite a boring slog and the way the story is told doesn’t do it any favors. By the time you’ve cleared half of the floors, you’re trying to avoid as many enemy encounters as possible just so you can finish the game and uninstall it asap.
Gameplay is clunky, feels like RPG maker assets put together. Hard achievements. Story .. well who cares you just have to do the quests. Verdict: One of those free garbage games we farm for cards, 10/10. EDIT: It looks like there are many paid/sponsored positive reviews on the store page. If I could put a double red thumb, I'd do it.
Сначала зачем? А теперь лучшее! Настоящий гимн классическим RPG.
