Pros: -Unique M3 level mechanics and fusion of adventure game play -Legitimate Steam Achievements (not just "play long enough") -Amazingly good story and soundtrack -Well-thought out interface Cons: -A little too luck-based with some M3 levels _____________ If you like M3 games, IMO this is one of the best M3s I've ever played - and I've been playing them for 20 years as of this writing. I originally bought the game elsewhere and was deep into it for 3 months straight before moving on to some other games for a while, then bought it again here at Steam to play for the Steam Achievements. Don't regret it for a second! While this game is part of a series, the story here is completely different and unrelated to the first game. This time you are helping the nun Ryvon find a lost relic which her sister took for some reason and hasn't been seen since. While this sounds like a very simple premise, as you play, you'll find that the story is much more complex than that and there are all sorts of little side plots going on. You will encounter all manner of friends and enemies in your adventure while going through lots of M3 levels in the process. The M3 levels are of 4 types: -traditional clear all tiles/drop target items to the bottom -"exploration" levels in which you must move the character icon along a pathway using matches and pick up inventory items; these levels feature regular shifts in gravity depending on which direction the path is going -potion brewing levels in which you must create bubbles with matches and match these bubbles with the "dirty" bubbles on the screen until the dirty bubbles pop -turn-based battle levels in which you need to deplete all of an enemy's hit points using targeted matches before the opponent can deplete all of your hit points While traveling the map, there is plenty of interaction with the scenes where you need to figure out what inventory items need to be placed/used in order to get new areas unlocked, or finding out what you can pick up to use elsewhere. You will have to backtrack many times to some scenes in order to keep going. The game interface is incredibly well-thought out with these features: -game difficulty is customizable not just with the typical relaxed, timed, or limited moves, but you can adjust difficulty for the M3 levels and the adventure portion separately; there is an easy, normal, and hard mode for each -a map which allows you to instantly access any open area by clicking on the area -a handy "to-do" tasks list by the map button -built in guide by the hint button -tabs in the map screen where you can view assorted "collections" and achievement progress -the entire game soundtrack can be downloaded from the CE extras section -actual good-looking concept art which isn't an obvious thrown-in afterthought The Steam Achievements are set up such that completionists will have to play through at least 3 different times to get all the achievements. Most of them aren't just the "play long enough" variety, but actual accomplishments, which I appreciate. Excellent ideas for the Steam Leaderboards too. About the only thing I can sort of complain about is how luck-based the game can be. If the pieces refuse to line up in some spots of a level, you're just screwed because the powerups don't recharge all that fast and the "insta-charge" feature is a one-time use per level and you only get a paltry amount of "insta-charges" from playing. Mad respect to those who got 100% mastery on the leaderboards! Eagerly awaiting Cave Quest 3.
What a game! It combines overall majority being Match-3 with some "find where to stick this item" and battles and tasks and... Makes it rather pretty darn hard. Only because Match-3 is luck based. Thankfully there are three difficulty modes. Also power ups. I don't know how the hell you play on Hard mode without losing all your hair in one go, but alright. The game is fun and it does have different "puzzles" for Match-3. Battles make you want to choke the opponent and never see them again. The worst enemy are the spiders. With infinite spider webs. I hate them. I hate them in battle and I hate them in the damn puzzle rooms. I'll even hate them in real life if it makes them vanish forever. If I can freaking avoid them being on my path... I am sure as hell not there! Was it enjoyable? Of course. Well... Unless you get such dirty moves from enemies or the map limits your moves so badly... It's painful in a good chunk of parts, but you still keep going. Because even when you reach the end... It tells you there is a Bonus... Even when you grit your teeth and play through the Bonus... It tells you that you still suck and didn't get all the Achievement or Secrets. Well you know what? I beat the game. Everything else can wait until next time! ^-^ Thank you for making this incredibly rage ind-... Wonderful game!!! :D :> :) (P.S. I hope those spiders never get reborn. I say we seal them away forever and destroy 'em in one go. -.-""")
For those who liked the first entry in the series, this is an extremely long (a bit stretched too far tbh) game in the exact same vein of the first, with several improvements in mechanics and whatnot. Those who never played or just don't remember... well, it's like an Artifex Mundi hidden object puzzle adventure game minus the hidden object and puzzle part all replaced with match-3 game mechanics. You gotta reeaaaaaaalllly like match-3 games because you're gonna be doing several hours of it in this entry. It gets to be excessive at times. Story wise, you are a nun-like or member of some protectorate society in a magic-fantasy world that goes looking for her missing sister, only to get embroigled in a mission to save the world from monsters invading from an evil/hell parallel dimension. So you have standard races like elves, fairies, dwarves and whatnot all in their usual roles, magic and magical weapons and tools, alchemy and a bunch of other stuff. I'll spoil things a bit here just to reinforce the point - you are in for this game because you love match-3 games. Give you a good example, you'll have to mix up a potion to recover missing characters multiple times over and over... like some 10 times or so. But understand, every few times you'll have to clean the cauldron, mash up ingredients, find elements, and mix up the whole thing - every single one of those steps is a match-3 game. Close to the end of the game you'll have to do an enhanced version of the portion, it's some 10 different match-3 games altogether until you get it right, because you need to find this, grind that, clean this, energize that... and so on. Almost everytime you get into a new point of the map, match-3 game to "find the way". Every fight, match-3 game. Using a tool to do something, match-3 game. Clean up an area of the map from spider webs or gravel, match-3 game. There must be over 100 match-3 parts in all the game, if not over that. There are some... 3 or 4 variations of the game, some you level up overtime gaining new powers, some are kinda fixed, but the board configuration is always different, and it gets harder the more you progress into the game. I'd say because of the evolving story it's a bit less repetitive than smartphone match-3 games, certainly less repetitive than basic ones like Bejeweled, but several times it feels a bit of a slog, a bit like the put too many match-3 parts to stretch the gameplay instead of it being logical to do so. So, given all that... it's a great game if match-3 is your thing. If not, don't even bother... Recommended given the caveats.
I enjoy this video game. It is enjoyable to me.
