Dark Train

This is a beautiful looking mouse-only puzzler where you (more or less) control a robotic squid-like creature and solve puzzles. And I can see how there could be so many mixed feelings about this game. Sometimes, the hardest part of solving a puzzle is figuring out WHAT the puzzle is. I almost put the game at the start, like many people. I had no idea what was going on and wasn't sure if there was a glitch or if I was missing something. I also had to reach out to a guide once, because I completely missed that something was even possible. After that though, I was good to go. The majority of gameplay is accessing various "worlds" inside the cargo crates on the train. As long as you hit the button on the train that causes them to light up, then they literally light up whenever there is something to be done inside. I see several people complaining about pixel hunting, but...I never encountered that. This is a puzzle game, sure, but....it is more about discovering than puzzling through solutions. I spent more time figuring out how I could impact the world around me than actually scratching my head on WHAT to do. And I think this is what may be throwing most people off on this one. We want to know HOW to play the game, and then use our knowledge of the game's mechanics to solve puzzle. But in this game, the discovering HOW to play seems to be part of the puzzle we're figuring out. For some people, they'll enjoy the experience. Others will be frustrated. I'd recommend this game only if you enjoy that sense of discovery. If you're looking to solve puzzles with clearly defined rules, then this may not be the best game for you.
