For all the somberness the trailers promised, it unfortunately delivered most in sombering my expectations for the game in its entirety. The glitchiness of the game gives it an unfinished air that makes the player less confident in their ability to progress, further instigated by the irritating boils that pop up in every aspect of the game. Whatever promise the game has in its current state is moot, but perhaps with time and care the game may recover to a healthy state. But by that point, would starting the game over again even be worth it? Hard to say. + Good ambiance and visual storytelling + Core gameplay is fun, albeit repetitive - Feels unfinished; buggy/glitchy - Camera is too close and frustrating - A little too vague with its direction Read the full review at https://www.keengamer.com/article/20115_mechanism-review
In A Nutshell
It's not easy to define what genre Mechanism belongs to, or exactly what it is. In this rather unique game, you will control a small robot, in a ruined world, infested with a mysterious substance known as "The Phlegm". Armed only with your wits and the will to find the truth, you leave your home in search for answers... The main thing to do in mechanism is exploring a bleak, and devastated world, now lying in ruins, where apparently you are the sole survivor. The atmosphere and art direction are absolutely impressive, and contribute a lot in giving out a sense of mystery, alienation, and loneliness. Soon, you will figure out certain items you find will have each their specific use, mostly in repairing broken machinery, allowing the exploration of different areas of the map. In each new area, you will find new items, dangers, and maybe answers to what happened. Even if this is a story-focused exploration game, there are elements from completely different genres into it, such as stealth, invaluable in some areas where you will have to be careful not to aggro monsters, that will make short work of you, and even roguelike elements, as certain actions can trigger a total reset of game progress, forcing you to restart from the beginning. Survival is another aspect of the game, you will have to be careful in avoiding the Phlegm sources and creatures, as too much exposure will kill you, but there are also advantages in being infected... Game saving is performed automatically on area transitions, and also at fixed save points called Photometers, that will save the world state. There are also tools to reset all unused item positions, useful if you lose some important item and have to get it back. The game also has its problems, mostly consisting of bugs of various degrees of severity, ranging from simple collision bugs, to game-breaking tier bugs that will reset world state randomly, or get you stuck in some places. Even with this kind of problems, the game still was enjoyable and kept me wanting to get to the bottom of it. Constant updates give good hope of such problems getting fixed. Overall, I found Mechanism to be a truly unique, immersive, and philosophical game, with hidden meanings behind every corner, original gameplay formula, and amazing art and soundtrack. An experience that won't disappoint for all story-driven game lovers.
Liked this review, and want to see more of the same quality? The many gameplay elements borrowed from completely different genres mix well and make the gameplay style very unique and original. our robot is able to pick up two objects at a time, but also risks of dropping them while infected by the Phlegm. Objects can vary from utility tools such as shields, flashlights, or batteries, to weapons like Anti Phlegm Bombs, to machinery parts and components. Your sole objective is to repair the Mechanism, and try to communicate with the Phlegm Source to find out the truth. This will require extensive exploration, avoiding many dangers. Story A minimalist story, where most of the past events are implied and left to the player for interpretation. Some information can be gained from certain "optional" NPCs, that will also give out tips on what to do next around the world. Excellent. Combat System N/A Content & Pricing For the price of 12€, i'd normally say this game is not worth it... but not this time. The duration depends on how many times you trigger the "reset" event and how long you take to figure out how to proceed, it took me 7-8 hours to finish the game. I'd say it's definitely worth it because of just how unique of an experience this is. No other game is like this. Balancing & Challenge The only challenge consists in not getting captured by certain enemies, that will trigger the "reset" event and clear all progress. This is fairly easy. Puzzles are quite simple. Challenge rating is Low.
Technical Analysis
Graphics Exceptional art direction and style make up for the not perfect quality of models and textures. The world may not be the top technically, but the way elements are arranged and the choices of design, make this game beautiful and really well done visually. Sound Excellent soundtrack, good sound effects. Some of the track songs really impressed me and emphasized certain moments in spectacular ways. Performance & Stability In some areas there are FPS drops even on high-end hardware, but not much. The game uses a considerable amount of GPU resources, (around 60% on a 1080 at 1080p), so optimization is a bit lacking. No crippling performance problems have been found. AI N/A Quality of Life Nothing bad to report. Bugs / Issues There are severe issues here. Some bugs are minor and can be easily dealt with or just ignored, but some others are very major and can lead to being stuck permanently, or reset of partial progress without reason. This actually forced me to restart the game once. The developer is however active and focused on fixing, but for now the bugs remain.
Conclusion & Rating
A very unique take over the exploration story-driven genre, Mechanism is a game that tells a story like no other, with a gameplay style like no others. If you like sci-fi settings, minimal and cryptic stories, and exotic worlds, look no further, because this is what you need.
RATING: 8.0 / 10
As commendable as a one-man project might be, Mechanism is underperforming. Its captivating, eerie atmosphere and music get swallowed whole by the game's own Phlegm: mildly annoying-to-gamebreaking bugs. Achievements not unlocking after several walkthroughs, randomly clipping into the void, a chance your game might restart when entering a new area, controller-keyboard controls displaying at the same time... the inconsistency is painfully patent. Had it not been for the aforementioned, you could easily look past the unfavorable camera angles in closed spaces and its vaguely developed premise. Unfortunately, as it is, this Mechanism still needs a bit more oiling to function properly.
I only started to play this game and I already amazed. I'm not a big fan of 3D games but Mechanism suddenly cough my eyes with it's unique atmosphere. And screenshots didn't lie - everything in game looks wonderful! At the very beginning I didn't want to leave main character's room because it was too cozy. All in all it looks like I have a great adventure ahead: in "Mechanism" player needs to explore the world and to collect different things that will help to solve its puzzle. The world feels alive and natural: many things are working as they supposed to, we've got many objects to interact, that's why exploration is so great in this game.
Softlock - The game. The tags mention the game being horror, but it's more of an existential crisis. This is a one person effort and some parts of the experience are really great. The music evokes melancholy, the sound design in general is really well done, the art direction is fantastic, there are a lot of things to be proud of. The gameplay is where it just comes apart at the seams and it is telling that one of the features is basically a reset state button for when the items get lost and the world gets really messed up. And messed up it does get. Hitboxes are inconsistent so there is no way to predict if you are putting yourself into harm's way by just walking near a puddle of corruption. What damages the character is also not exactly telegraphed - when phlegm pours from above and you open your handy umbrella you will still get into the killzone if you walk too fast even though no new phlegm falls on you anymore. The character is extremely cute and unfortunately that is the only thing that will be seen in great detail because everything else has an out of focus blur, further exacerbated by camera's chaotic movement. If you don't wear glasses, you will start after playing this game. It is easy to figure out what to do, but very difficult to actually do it. Saving the game is really not obvious. You will slide off ledges, you will fall through the world, you will resort to kamikaze attacks on spores, you will quickly pick up on the game's numerous hints and get grabbed by TV-headed slenderman for following them. At some point I ran at the basement monster commando style with the bomb out and it went off while dying. When coming back to life it was still exploded. I just can't keep doing this to myself. I sincerely do not regret paying the measly 10 bucks, the project shows a lot of promise and the dev has plenty of talents that are not software related, but it's been three years and the game is still in an early-access state. Very early access. Alexander, please get more people on the project, or open-source it and get some help. There is no reason to release stuff in this state and this could be so much better.
The idea behind the game is good - but the implementation feels incomplete. The character's interaction with the environment is clunky at best with awkward collision detection and terrible camera angles; everything about it in this sense feels unpolished. Whenever you can interact with an item, it flashes the button to press; but coupled with the awful camera angles, it can be difficult to tell what you're interacting with. The feedback from interactions often leaves you wondering if anything happened since it doesn't seem to give clear indications via its user interface. Even the sound wasn't too great; after leaving the initial room, the synth-ish music started with this single repeated beat that started giving me a headache almost immediately. Update: Tried playing again but still don't like it since experience is too frustrating. The camera angles are still really awkward (plus collision bleeding) and make gameplay difficult in a bad way. The way the character moves is really frustrating too; he always looks as if he's going faster than he is, and the movement feels unnatural in general to me. Even the menu systems are frustrating since it keeps resetting my resolution preference and there doesn't seem to be a way to view/change the control schemes.
The game's atmosphere is fantastic. I don't understand why so many people gave this game bad rewiews. The design is awesome, the music is good and the puzzles are fun. This game was created by only a single person so of course it's not the best game ever made but i appriciate this guy's hard work to create a very interresting game.
I wanted to like this game, but the bugs got in the way. Having items disappear, getting pushed off an edge by phantom geometry, ending up out of bounds, freefalling forever... and that's just the first hour. Sadly the game's first impression didn't draw me in enough to want to push past these rough edges.
